Title: 3rd Bow string to break in 2 years?
Post by: MISSINGINOHIO on September 01, 2014, 09:32:00 PM
I don't understand why two broke on the rack 3rd one at full draw all three at the nock. All nocks were tied on. None overly old but I do shoot a lot. I keep my bows strung. Anyone else have this happen or have any imformation. My buddy thump has never had one break and has been shooting a lot longer than me.
Thanks
Ray

Do you use super glue on your tied on nocks?

Could it be that the glue you are using is causing a chemical reaction that destroys your string? Have you always used the same brand of glue? Makes ne appreciate my clamp on nocks.

I believe its always been the same super glue bottle so it could be. I always was worried about the metal nocks but may have to go back to them.

I change strings 2-3 times a year, and yeah I tie on nocks with superglue. I'm not a believer in the chemical reaction thing; I think the glue makes a stiff 'cutting edge' on the string. Also making the string come to a sharp angle hundreds of times per whatever will wear that area.

Why not just tie your nock and melt the ends instead of using glue? I have done it this way for years without problems. I am not saying it is the best way, but just giving you an idea.

The super glue has done it to me a couple of times. I pull the ends back through the wrap if I use serving material or burn off the tie ends on dental floss. When mine have broken I couldn't shoot for a couple of days till I got over the scare. So no glue for me.

I use super glue too but the black tube (loctite - super glue 3 - power flex - gel ) this one stay flexible and the gel dont penetrate deep ,no break string for me    :D

A few weeks ago I posted a thread on this about many people don't check the inside of their nocks to see if they have any "FLASH" or in other words extra material at the seams of the nock when molded..
Check the throat where it slips on the string cause just a small bit of anything can start to fray the string material..Dirt,nocks that are too tight, nocks that might of got nicked when shooting a tight group could also cause the problem if some sort of damage was on the nock..Many other reasons to think about..

something is definitely going on I have never broken a string. I replace them when they start to "look worn" but i am not a fanatic about it. what about the nocks on your arrows? I am just throwing out a wild guess. I once had an endless loop sting that ripped the nocks of all my arrows unless I widened them with an emory board.

Stop the super glue and see what happens.

Curious as the what string type and strand count?

I use fletch tite instead of Super Glue, but I think the problems are the nock too tight .

Yes, I've had the same thing happen - string broke while the bow was hanging on the rack. Veery lucky it wasn't earlier that day, at full draw.
There have been a couple of threads here on this.
A nock tied too tightly can compromise the serving, especially if the diameter of the nock material is not thicker than the serving material. Glue can also be a cause.
When using a tied nock now, I'm careful to use thicker material, and keep a close eye on the serving. Also I melt the tag ends into the tied nock, and avoid glue.

In 2005 I was writing a training manual for a program I'm involved in. One of the chapters involved tying on nock locators. I had heard about the idea of using a dab of glue on the knots.

I called Ray at BCY (bowstring and serving maker) to ask him about this. He advised against it. He said bowstrings break at this glued point because the threads can become brittle.

I realize, as this thread illustrates, people have differing experiences with this technique. I have never had a tied nock locator come undone so I don't understand the need for glue. I would never use glue on these knots.

I may just be fortunate but I have never had a bowstring break since I started shooting in the mid-1960's.

By the way, the manual recommends against using glue on the knots.

Just a guess, but what type of serving are you using? If nylon maybe the super glue is melting the serving, making a sharp point.

I use Braided, with super glue, (for years) No probloms.  ..James

Interesting discussion. I have used superglue for a long long time and never had an issue. Guess I wont from now on, just to be safe.

Un string your bow might help some but the waxed dental floss, and then heated with a match until it melts together is what I use.

I used to use Fletch Tite also. Never had a string break. My currant method is to use waxed string for sewing leather. I get it at Tandy leather store. It is limp from the wax so easy to work with. I tie my knot and use my heat gun to set.

The nock tying thread BCY makes works great.  Use the knot Ryan shows (S2 Bowstrings)--it's quick and easy--then melt the ends.  The nock tying thread melts great.  It's also good for tying on silencers, etc.

If you don't want it to be adjustable, just tie it tighter.

I've been lucky in that a string has never broken on me whether I used metal or tie - on nocks.
The only string problem that has reared it's ugly head is the flemish twist string broke some strands on the upper limb end. It didn't totally break, it just unraveled enough to make the bow look like it had been unstrung. Unfortunately I had just started drawing the bow when the string did it's dance. Wasn't exactly a happy moment!

Ive broke 3 this year! There was a burrin the string groove on my favorite longbow, and it has been fixed now.

I dont know what could be causing your situation. I have never experienced or heard of that before.

First off thanks to all of you for the helpfull imformation .Its a weird thing as they have been different types of bows strings and arrows that have been used. And the last one(nock) was not tight at all as i would adjust them every now and then and they would move fairly easily. Not sure of the serving  materials but this last one was 8 strand and the other two were thicker.

I'm at a loss at what's causing it! I've got nothing. I did have ONE bow string break and it was when the original FF string came out and I was using a brass crimp on nock locater. It broke right at the crimp on locator. I've since advanced to HP skinny strings with Halo serving super glueing tie on nock locators and never had a problem.
