Title: Sharpening Grizzly single bevel with KME
Post by: Warchild on August 31, 2014, 08:45:00 PM
Ok, I love the Grizzly single bevel heads. I killed a nice deer with them last year and the performance was quite impressive. I get them hunting sharp with a file and jewel stick but keep reading about how guys are getting them razor sharp with the KME systems. I would like some input as to which system works the best, the knife sharpener or the broadhead sharpener. Thanks

The BH sharpener will work fine for your Grizzlies, if there are other things you want to sharpen the knife sharpener is very versatile. I went with the knife sharpener and love it.

x2 on JimB's method.  I use sand paper on a true/plumb surface via his advice.  I start with wet/dry 220 then 320 600 1500.  I was going to get 2000, but the local store didn't have it.  They seem plenty sharp without the 2000 and I have drawn my own blood several times checking the sharpness. Mirror finish, super durably sharp.

My only advice is to give yourself a reference as to where the head is in the jig so when you repeat the process next year your angle is close if not the same.  It does take some elbow grease to establish the bevel angle sometimes, but after that the finer grits go quick.

Either sharpener will do a great job.I have both but these days find the broadhead sharpener a little easier.

Remember to stay with your first, coarsest grit until the edge is sharp-full length. After that,it only takes a few strokes with each successive grit.Go lighter as you get into the finest grits.

Some good advice here....

Any of the KME range will suit your task but just remember to get the edge happening first, then look to polish.
