Title: Pants (not camo) for hunting
Post by: jebeckjr on August 31, 2014, 06:03:00 PM
For those of you that don't wear camo pants while hunting (especially early season), what do you wear?  I looked at the Kuiu pants, but size 40 seems to be the largest they come.  Any recommendations on anything that may come in the 44 / XXL range that is reasonably light weight (for the PA fall) and quiet?

Save yourself a pile of money and go to Old Navy and buy a couple pairs of there cotton Cargos. There is usually always the solid green and sometimes other "earthy" colors.

                                                 Good Shooting,
                                                                       Craig

I buy grey ripstop Wrangler cargos from the big box store online. I love them. Have been using them a few years.

Dickies from WallyWorld are cheap and come in all kinds of sizes. They are all I wear at work. But the canvas style fabric is loud when hunting if anything brushes against it or if you happen to rub your legs together while walking.

I'd probably go the cotton cargo pant route. They are silent and give two extra pockets.

I was just looking at these today at TSC.  Both green and brown, look to be very well made pants for a good price...$26 I think.

I wear these also and they work great.  A little loud when they are new but quiet down after a few washings.  I also like the cotton cargo pants.

I am going to go with first lite Kanabs in earth.  Review seem pretty good for an all season pant.

Try Champion C9 golf pants.  Very light, quick drying, stretchy fabric, and only 20-some bucks a pair.  I wear the railroad gray ones.

Cotton cargo pants from Walmart. 15 bucks, tough, quiet, and don't care how dirty or bloody they get.

Save specialty or expensive cloths for special or expensive hunts!

If you go with Carhartt, Dickies, CE Shmidt etc....I've worn this stuff for 15 years....it DOUBLES the life of it if you hang to dry. The dryer causes it to shrink up and it seems to make it wear out alot faster.

I wash all my canvass/duck style pants together in cold water. Then hang them outside to dry this time of year...when it's cold I hang them up around the wood stove. I've got a couple pairs that have made it over two years in the log woods doing them this way. Before I figured this out, six months was all I could get out of them.

I also do my coats and bibs the same way.

Plain old work grade pants make excellent field pants. You can get them in many "woods" colors such as green, brown, tan, grey, etc. To me, it makes no sense to spend big money on field pants.

Lightweight grey fleece pants.  I got mine at Gander Mountain on sale a few years back for about $15.  Guessing W-mart and others would have them as well.  I don't mean sweatshirt material.  The fleece I am talking about is kind of fuzzy.  Very light weight, extremely quiet and dries quickly.  Mine came with calf high zippers and draw string waist.

Found a pair of the rip-stop wranglers - thanks for that suggestion!

Why not camo?  Simply, in the area I live and work, it's easier to squeeze in a little time hunting before / after work and get changed at work.  Knowing that not everyone I work with is tolerant of such activities, I avoid conflict by just wearing "regular" clothing.  It seems like I'm just hiking the trails...  Not a perfect system by any stretch, but anything I can do to avoid stress while getting more time in the woods is a good plan for me!

OK, sad you have to go through all that. The millitary BDU's are just so comfortable, and good storage pockets, I like them. I like pants that are quiet though, and sometimes they are a bit noisy.

I was in a TSC today and they have a line of green and dark tan cargo pants in a lighter cotton for $12.99. Didn't note the brand. Might be good for hot weather.

The First Lite Kenab's are great pants. A bit pricey but quality in construction and not over weight. You can wear them just about all season. No layers in the early season and layers underneath them when it gets cold. Can't beat Merino Wool.

shop goodwill or a similar good sized thrift store. You can usually find wool pants for a couple of bucks, same for wool sweaters.

I've been meaning to check out the Goodwill stores outside of this area.  Living in the city, the Goodwill stores tend to collect and disperse different types of clothing than what you may find in a more rural area.

I use a pair of olive green BDU's. Got them from a military surplus outfit. Excellent quality and I wear them well into November. Love cargo pockets for those exploratory hunts where I travel light. Stuff the pockets and go

You can always try looking thru Sportsman's Guide.  They deal a lot in military surplus stuff.  Usually lots of lighter weight dress (mainly wool blends) pants are available, but maybe not as much in XXL sizing.

Northern tool canvas...think they are labeled as Granite Gear or something to that effect...a 12oz heavy cotton very simi1ar to Carhartt at about 2/3's the cost. I work and play in them.
