A while back I scanned and offered the Barry Wensel/Paul Schafer interview to members on Tradgang. I got an overwhelming response to the article, and sent out the article to somewhere around 200 members.
Well, due to the gracious contribution of Bowhunter magazines from the 80's and 90's by our very own "Onestringer", I'm able to scan more articles of interest that I think alot of you will enjoy.
The next installment will be "11th Hour Ram" written by Paul Schafer. In this article he tells the story of the final sheep he needed to complete his grand slam and the friends that helped him make it possible. I think you'll recognize a name or two.
I'd like to try the distribution differently this time, so that I can make sure I email everyone that asks for it. Instead of everyone emailing me, and PMs, please just post here with either your email or an "I do", so that I can get a list of names. After a 1 week I will then go to your profile and copy your email address. This way I can send out just a few emails to multiple recipients. Please make sure your email is NOT set to private if you want it emailed.
Also if anyone is looking for a specific article from that time frame please let me know and I'll see if I can find it for you. I hope I'm not breaking any copyright rules, I just want to share some long lost story telling with the rest of you folks, and again thanks to Scott "Onestringer" for his generous contribution. Thanks. Tim :wavey:

You should just get a hold of Terry and have him put it in the Paul Schafer section here on TradGang, then everybody could just go there and read the articles along with seeing the videos that are stored there as well.
Good Idea SteveO. I have a quite a few articles that I want to scan that I think eveyone will enjoy. Maybe we need a place for vintage articles. I don't know how to post PDF files so that they are functional as PDF so that you can zoom in on text, thats why I've been emailing them. I'll check into it.

If you click on your name and your profile comes up and has "Click here to Email this user" where your address should be, you are set to Private. I'll need to cut and paste your address into Microsoft Outlook when I mail these out. As far as I know I can not send attachments through TG "send email" function. Thanks in advance. Tim

yep
I just saw this. Please send me a copy also. I lost this issue in my fire. Schaf sat in my living room and gave me a blow by blow of this same hunt, but I'd love to refresh my memory again. I remember kidding him about how much weight he lost on this hunt and that I was pretty sure I could whup him right about then... but then I changed my mind. :^) You know, last Monday evening we went to a BBQ at John Vargo's hunting camp. I sat down in an old LazyBoy recliner I'd given John a few years ago for the camp. When I reached down to pull the lever to recline it, I remembered it was broken off by Schaf and brother Gene who got into an Indian leg-wrestling match in my living room one evening. In fact, I distinctly remember that was the same exact chair Paul sat in the evening he shared the story and we looked at the pictures of his "Eleventh Hour Ram". Thanks tim. BW
I do! Thanks in advance!
I had that magazine back in the late 80's and I read Paul's story over and over. From that time on,he was my bowhunting HERO.I can still remember the friends who helped him fund the hunt, the broken string and all the frustrations of a high dollar hunt.Imagine someone in the Philippines having Shaf as a hero.Im sure he has affected many lives Stateside.I was still in college then and still dreaming of bowhunting till now.My day will soon come.

Barry, thanks for sharing. I wish I could have seen the Indian Leg wrestling match, from what I've read Gene held the title for quite some time. Care to share who won? :)
Little stories like that will rarely if never be found in magazines, so for those of you who care to share them, my sincerest thanks.
Tim
Morning Tim,
I'd like a copy of both articles as well and thanks for doing this.
Although he doesn't do it any longer, Gene was never beaten in his life to my knowledge at Indian leg wrestling. Seems like one time the Federation of Wild Sheep had some matches in California to raise money during their convention. If I remember right little brother won it and generated over $12,000. towards the wild sheep foundation. I also remember him leg wrestling Chicago Cubs pitcher and Cy Young Award winner Rick Sutcliffe... all 6'8" of him.. one night in a deer camp. When Gene rolled him the first time ole Sutcliffe almost went through the wall. He claimed Gene caught him off guard. In the rematch Gene hit him so hard he rolled poor Rick right into a flaming fireplace. Regarding the match with Schaf, Gene rolled Paul twice in a row. Being a high school and college wrestler who had never been pinned in his life, Schaf didn't take too well to losing any kind of wrestling match, even if it was Indian leg wrestling. Thus, the busted arm on my Lazy Boy recliner when Schaf started to throw little brother around my living room to remind him just who the alpha-male really was. Great memories. BW
Please include me. Thanks you very much!
I would appreciate a copy also. Thanks! david.sterling@cox.net
Awesome BW, being a wrestler myself I can relate to the frustration he must've felt. Thanks. Tim

Barry, Thanks for telling us that story. On a related note. It seems Gene shot a couple nice hogs in Florida a week or two ago, one of them weighed nearly 500 pounds. And then his buddy took a deer. So in the process of retrieving and dragging all this game in the heat and high humidity, Ol' Gene passed out from heat stroke and took a swan dive off the elevated seat of the transport vehicle. Falling eight feet to the dirt, his hunting partners were very concerned about the outcome. They thought he was dead! Well being a tough old bird, Gene finally came to. After getting rehydrated the only injury he suffered was a strained knee. So, now would be a good time to challenge Gene to leg wrestling if anyone has the hope of beating him. Ha!
Mike
Yep...even though I have a copy somewhere in my files, I'd like one, too.

I still miss him! I have been hunting Elk since September 7th, in two states, and Paul was with me on those hunts...in my heart. I hear a bull and I see his grin.
