What is the reason for having such a long serving on the bow string? You actually only use 3 or 4 inches. So why serve 12"? As you can tell I am new to making strings!!!!!!!!!!!!

My standard serving is 8".  The serving is there to protect the string from wear when striking the arm guard along with insuring a proper nock fit and being more comfortable for your fingers.

I often serve a bit below for hunting seasons and cold weather when I'm wearing hunting clothing or a hoodie. I typically wear an armguard during these periods and like to protect the actual string, so I over do the serving. During the summer, I'll typically only have a few inches of serving, as I usually shoot bare armed.

thank you. This is a world of knowledge for us newbies. I love this place.

I only served a few inches on the last strin I made. Just FYI, but it's annoying trying to use a bow square when the bottom clip doesn't sit on the serving.  It makes it sit at an angle.
