Found this freshly storm fallen persimmon at my camp this weekend. Immediately got the saw out cut some eight foot logs. I think i got some riser wood now and a couple turkey calls in this haul.

Nice, is persimmon a pretty hard wood?
should be-- it was used for golf club heads (for "woods") back in the day.
Makes good selfbows too.
That's a great find, Joey! And bigger than any persimmon I see around here.
Yes, persimmon is s pretty hard wood, being related to ebony. It's pretty good looking stuff, too.
I'd like to see what it looks like in a riser.
I think the wood folks call it Blond Ebony. Interesting footnote....is Titleist had a contract with my club in late 70's to log the largest persimmons out for golf club heads. Well they contracted a logger and he came in and piled up a substantial pile of choice persimmon and then a little known company called Taylor came out with a metal driver......well rest is history....Titleist left their persimmon in our woods and it rotted. Fortuately we still have stands of trees 2-3'diameter. pretty neat walking in a grove of them
Notice this tree behind me is a monster too i hunt out of. There are over 40 female persimmons in this grove and all i can kill is a dang coyote!!!

Coyotes love persimmons. I collect seed from their scat to replant. The coyote's gut scarifies the seed which helps their germination.
I've never seed persimmons that big either. Most seem to be about 6" in diameter.
Fellow by the name of Leon Blagg made beautiful english style selfbows and flatbows from persimmon trees, the man was an artist with wood. Shame im not closer or I'd get a stave from you.

I use a lot of persimmon in my risers, I am building a Super Diablo (knock-off)with a persimmon and walnut riser now. And several of my personal bows have persimmon in the risers.

the deer LOVE persimmons,, we call it deer candy in our neck of the woods.
I have a Kolomi bow with persimmon core and bamboo back and belly. I like it.
Anyone have pictures of the wood on bows?
Nice Haul Joey!

my family owns a very old, probably late 1700's small kitchen chair made of persimmon and its some tough, beautiful wood. My favorite piece of furniture...and it's tough as nails too.
