Title: New to Food Plots!!
Post by: BrownA5 on August 18, 2014, 12:22:00 PM
I live in upstate NY and am thinking about doing food plots for next year.  I would start this year, but it seems to be a bit late in the year to start.  I would be interested in getting some input on this.  Thanks!

You've got time to do it this year, provided you can plow/till soil and plant. And you can get it in and done my this time next week. I suggest a mixture of Clover/rape/rye. You are about 2 weeks late, but still have a working window if you get cracking.  rat'

Appreciate the input.  We certainly have had enough rain recently so the ground is not hard packed.

I'll be following this, I recently had some select cut logging done, and therefore have logging roadways (which is a reason the cutting was done...) and I would like to plant something on the roadways.

What I find funny is that guys will plant a food plot then put up an electric fence around it to keep the deer out of the place they want deer to come to in the fall. Gee, what else can I spend my money on today?

If I could afford one of those fences right now I'd have one. Planted all the logging roads and trails in late July and they came up well. Checked them on Sunday and they are almost gone! I mean ate down to the bare ground!! LOL! Oh well, at least I know the deer are well fed!

Yeah, on a smaller plot the deer will eat the tops off right quick.  Some things can handle that but others (buckwheat) can't.

Here in  central illinois I have planted seed rye and winter wheat   in early  fall and gotten corps. Probably the only thing green in the area after hard frost.  The deer seem to like it  ;)
