Title: Broadhead ?
Post by: coyote30 on August 15, 2014, 10:40:00 PM
I shoot a bear k-hunter 50#@28" probably 48.5-49#@ my 27.5" draw, 30" 2016 with 175 grain heads for an approximate total weight of 540 grains. Would i be ok to use woodsman elite heads or should i go with the grizzly for deer hunting?

I'd go with grizzly simply cause I can't sharpen three blade heads worth a dang, but if you can either should work for deer!

Thanks old goat. I don't have much trouble putting an edge on any cutting edges.

For me personally I like either 3 blades or wide 2 blades like simmons sharks. Out of the two you named I would go with the woodsman elite. The grizzly Kodiak is a good head though and cuts a pretty big wound channel. If you are iffy about your broadhead do a search on here for broadhead pictures. There was a post a while back that will make you a believer in multi blade heads and wide 2 blades like the sharks.

I like 3 blades on thin skinned critters such as deer-antelope and bear. When I go after bigger heavier boned stuff the 2 blade goes huntin with me.

Either would work just fine for deer.  Whichever you can get sharp and shoot straight.

either, or a dozen others would work well with your rig. Get em sharp.  Hit them well

This is good to hear. The woodsman comes in 175 and is a one piece threads included. The grizzly i would have to trim a steel adapter to make weight. I don't care for the aluminum adapters.

I had a complete past though with 175 grain 1 1/8th vpa on a deer and had 175 grain 1 1/4th vpa almost make a complete pass though, it hung up on the feathers and fell out ten yard after the took off.  I wa shooting a black widow kb 50 at 28", I draw to 27.25-27.5, so about the same as you.  I think the 1 1/4th is a little big, you should be just fine with the 1 1/8th woodsmans.

Doug, that sounds like the kind of performance i'm looking for.

I would suggest that any legal broad head that is well tuned, sharp, and placed in the right spot will work just fine.
