If you can't perfectly match broadhead weight to field point weight, would you order broadheads that are 10-15 grains lighter than your field points, or 10-15 grains heavier than your field points?
I want to match adapter weight and broadhead weight to my field point tuning, without 5 or 6 mis-matched weights/adapters/inserts up-front on each arrow.
I'd like to keep it to just one insert, one broadhead adapter, and one broadhead.
Thanks Much!
Marc
I think that many of the more technical guys have said that 10-15 shouldn't be anything to make a difference to the vast majority of us. I believe this is also in OL's tuning discussion.
Unless you are right on the edge with your weight/spine, there should be nothing experienced.
Give a choice, I'd go heavier. Thats just me, and I won't say why :goldtooth:
if i had to make that choice i would go lighter...my reasoning for this is that a broadhead is longer than a field point and may change the spine of the arrow shaft slightly...a slightly lower point weight may even things out for ya... that is why i think it is ultra important to tune with your broadheads...
I find what jaccobsladder said to be true. Sometimes with carbon and aluminum shafts some broadheads can be difficult to make fly the same as with field points. The broadhead being longer tends to weaken the spine a little bit. The answer for me is to use a slightly heavier field tip to even out the spine difference out.
Good question! I have been wondering this myself.
For me, the closest match that I have found is this and I shoot cedar:
If I am shooting 125g (WW) broadheads then 145g field tips fly nearly as well on the same shaft.
Shooting broadheads that are 135g (Magnus I) or 145g (STOS) then 160g FT.
So I suppose, for me, it would fall in the 15g-20g difference.

I shoot 145gr field tips and 150gr BH no difference to me. That's all I know.
I shoot cedars, and always go heavier with the broadheads. I generally overspine to start, by 10-20#. Field points are 125 grains. Broadheads are from 135 to 175 grains. No problem with tuning/arrow flite when I make the change. The 175s do drop a little more at longer distances, of course.
If shooting carbons I would go heavier, heck shooting anything I would go heavier, it is not gonna make a differnce, from what I understand it takes at least 25 grains to make any difference. Shawn
I shoot 125gr field points and some of my broadheads are 115 and others are 125. They shoot the same
I'm with Aggie...I shoot 145 fieldpoints and 125 bhs. I can't tell a bit of difference. If I put a 145 bh on the same shaft, I seems I get more arrow drop at 25 yds or so.
I'd do it right and make them the same. A bit of lead in the BH or drill a 1/8" hole in the arrow and use brass rod, or whatever it takes to make them match. If 100 grains makes a difference so does 1. You can get away with a big difference if you are shooting narrow heads or mechanicals! :) ...O.L.
OK thanks everyone!!
I was planning on getting them as close as possible, but just wanted to see what other opinions were floating around out there.
Take Care,
Marc
I agree that matched is important. In fact maybe I'm too picky - I weigh my finished arrows to get the consistency I like.
But sometimes I find that some shaft/broadhead combinations won't group the same as the same shaft with a same weight field tip. For these I find that going up slightly - say 15 grains - makes the dynamic spine of the combination shoot the same.
By the way, the only reason I left out wood shafts earlier is because they don't use screw in points which are available in smaller weight increments.
If you buy long adapters that are hollow, you can put lead shot in and melt it. I do that to get my Judos the same as my field points and BHs.

OK thanks guys!
So far, it seems mixed. Some guys want the same, some say lighter broadhead, and some say heavier broadhead.
Not what I was expecting; however, I wonder if some variance in "formula" is due to using woodies vs. carbons, where the added weight in carbons is in the shaft, and the added weight of woodies is sticking off the end of the shaft...
Just some food for thought.

Marc
And OL said the "M" word...
Someone pass the popcorn... :campfire:
I shoot 175gr field tips with a 50 and a 20gr weight added to my 55/55 GT's (from my 61# Border Black Douglas). My Wensel's fly the same at 20 grs? lighter. The aerodynamics are different between a broadhead and a field point so I don't agree that they must weigh the same. I honestly believe they fly the same and so don't others who watch or have the same set-up. I'm not changing it now in any case! :bigsmyl:
The general rule long ago was 5#'s heavier spine for the broadhead of the same weight as the field point. Might be an old "wifes tale" but it works for me :D ...Van
Cedar shaft + 125 gr. WW's
or
Cedar shaft + 125 gr. field point
= no discernable difference!
Moral of the story...use cedar shafts! :bigsmyl:
Mechanicals?
Thanks all! I appreciate all the info.
I have some adapters coming tomorrow so I can do some testing.
