Can anyone tell me where I might be able to get some quality obsidian spalls. Not too interested in what 3R sells.
paleo planet , primitive archer or flintknappers.com.
PM me , I have tons of obsidian. Interested in trades.
Look for a local rockhound club. They usually call themselves gem and mineral societies. You might even find yourself a whole new hobby...
The online distributors that John described are the best I've found. I also have a ton of rock and even some obsidian preforms that only need a little preassure flaking to be made into a blade or point.
Kentucky flint works has it. I've never dealt with this company but I know he does offer it. Good luck with your search.
Check local pet stores that sell fish and aquariums - the bigger the better in regards to the tropical fish section. They typically have slag glass for sale in different sizes and the rainbow of colors - even some obsidian mixed in(really the exact same thing) I have found some great snow flake obsidian at pet stores.
Look for pieces with limited or no air bubbles. They are cool of they land in the middle of a glass head but really suck when they are on the edge and if you are working on hunting heads the air pocket is obviously a week point.
I find them sold by size or pound depending on the store but all in all rather cheap when you consider the cost of shipping ROCKS!!
PM sent
I have a basket ball sized chunk I found on a Navy Base in California! Are you to old to enlist?
Go to Letchworth State park Aug. 24-25; Stone Tool Technology Show Flint knapping. They will have tons of "stone" for sale plus you can sit in, knapp and learn with knappers from all over.
Wow, thanks Tique, I had no idea!

Bobby don't be afraid to ship rocks. I sent several 30 plus pounds of rock from New Mexico to Michigan for under $16.00 in the flat rate box. Just have to tape the crap out of it.
It was well worth it as if was a knapping rock source spot I stumble on to.
As mentioned hit a knap it or two. Lots of free help and lots of knapping supplies. I am heading down to flint ridge at the end of the month.
Good to know John - if it fits - "it ships"
the advice above, but I have practiced and had great results from beer bottles
Kentucky flint works is a great place to get many different kinds of rock including obsidian. Dennis has great rock.
Some great info thank you..... ive managed to put together some knapping tools but have nothing to knapp
lots of lithic out there to knapp aside from obsidian, glass bottle bottoms are pretty close to obsidian though.
Not obsidian but NY has knapp able stuff. Blue black
