I think I need another 50's style recurve as I shoot better with a low wrist grip. Had a Great Plains Long Curve years ago but sold it.
Looking for suggestions of bowyers that are making this style bow. Model names appreciated.
Likes, dislikes, and preferences appreciated too.
I just want to consider all options!
Thank you, Skychief.
Maddog Recurve. Mike makes a great bow.
Fox Breed... I have had 2 and they were both fantastic shooters!!! (Not making the same mistake twice, so I'm hanging on to the second one.)
Toelke Chinook. I've tried most all of them, best I've found.
I agree with Biathlonman, The Chinook was my favorite out of all that I've had. I also liked the Black Widow PSR. The Great Northern Super Ghost was very smooth and fast. I had a Kahanna Kurv, but thought it lobbed arrows, although others have a more favorable opinion.
Someone else posted a similar thread recently.
In no particular order:
Java Man Duoflex
Fox Breed
Leon Stewart 1pc recurve
Whisperstik Mojostik
Toelke Chinook or Toelke 64" SS
Holm-made River Runner
Black Widow PSR
Great Northern Ghost
Mad Dog Archery
Kota Killum
Seven Lakes "No Name"
Mahaska recurve
I'm sure I'm forgetting some
If I had to take my pick I'd go with either the Java Man, Stewart, Fox, Holm-made, or Toelkes.
Chad Holm's River Runner......one of the best, and there is a couple on the classifieds.
I am really wanting a Chad Holm River Runner.
I've shot a few of them but the Bear 59r (new production) takes the cake for me.
I love it
Another really good one is the Whisperstik Mojo Stik.Great shooters and very quiet.I have two of the 56" ones.

I've owned quite a few of the top 50s style recurves made and my St Charles Thunderbird and Great Northern Ghost are as good as they come.If I can figure out how to post pics from my iPhone I will.

Same here.
Toelke is my choice. Or a vintage bear
Vintage Bear
Also consider the Acadian Woods one-piece carbon reflex recurve and a Lone Wolf Kayapo, if you can find one.
I've had the Great Northern Ghost and Super Ghost and found them to be excellent. It really gives you the longbow experience with the narrow limbs.
Toelke Super Static- Small riser, uber quiet, wicked accurate. A dream to hunt with.
Joshua
You should try to pick up one of these...64 inch 1960 Kodiak Deluxe

Wild Horse Creek Mariah.
I love my St. Joe River recurve!!! They have the old school lines and shoot better than any bow I've ever shot. Everything custom made just for you, and Great people to work with!!
Another vote for a Mojostick, I've got a 62" one that is just slick.
Many options to consider. Different lengths, grip style, takedown and type of takedown - bow bolt, carbon sleeve, metal sleeve, hinge, jack knife and 3 piece. Toelke has a lot of good options with two types of grips and a 1 piece, bow bolt or 3 piece. Fox has good choices in length and offers the 2 piece metal sleeve. One of these kinds of bows is next on my list and I am leaning towards the Fox Breed because compactness and takedown are my priorities. Good luck with your search.
BW PSR, has to be one of the best, most fun bows I've ever shot (and I have had a lot !!!)
I have a 2 pc, 46@28 so it's about 50# at my draw. It's going on a bear and elk hunt the next two months.
You do have lots of options for having a new 50's style curve built today.
However do not forget the vintage bows; they are great bows, terrific shooters, and you can buy multiple models for the price of a new built custom one. I have a 59 Kodiak, a 62 Grizzly, a 60 Shakespear, a Browning Cobra II, and a sweet Ben Pearson.
Here is my 1960 Shakespear

There's Robertson Peregrine in the classifieds...my favorite but RH.

Hey Joe, you wouldn't happen to have a picture of the "Sweet Ben Pearson" to share would you?
A takedown Black Widow PSR is about as sweet as it gets for me.
Here you go Jason; it's 58" long

X2
The bows from the 50's that I've been able to purchase all have one thing in common, they are refined and fast. Several limbs designs had more than the typical two lams you see on most bow limbs today. I agree with Joe VT, don't overlook the real 50's bows, you might be surprised with the quality and speed of the vintage bows.
One that really surprised me was a 50's Hoyt. The 55 & 56 Kodiaks were pretty quick as well.
 Your the best Joe, thanks. Great bow!
I can't believe that no one has mentioned the new Bear 59 Kodiak. It has become a favorite of mine and I'm turning it into this years meat maker.

I still prefer an original 57 Kodiak. The Great Northern Ghost,Roberston Peregrine, and current 59 Kodiak are also good shooters.
I can't believe nobody has mentioned the all Yew St Charles Thunderbird,, the ghost in green glass and the jack knife option is sweet too..
I honestly haven't shot most of the bows mentioned here so I'm cheerfully biased.
I shoot a Wild Horse Creek Mariah. It's a beauty and shoots like a dream. I also have a Northern Mist Ottawa that is top-notch as well.
I've owned Kohannah Kurves, excellent bows.
Skychief:
Sent you a PM.
Tajue17, I mentioned the Thunderbird. And after having it a couple of weeks now, shooting everyday,it has become my favorite bow :)
