.....but he can still whip me in a shoot off! Greg Nicolau and I met Ron at the Elm Hall shoot today. Ron is temporarily deaf as a stump, was walking with a cane to combat some vertigo, and was shooting an old Grimes Chief aluminum riser bow that he just picked up yesterday.
I have to admit, I was trying like heck to beat him (and so was Greg), and I couldn't get it done. That old curmudgen can still talk smack and shoot with the best of them!
Thanks for a good shoot Ron!! I WILL beat you next weekend.... :bigsmyl:

And a lefty to boot Roger !!! Thanks for sharing with us...... :campfire:
Ever hear the story of treacherous old men....
What a treat! I would be happy to just watch Ron shoot in person let alone shoot with him. What a great way to spend a Saturday!
Pretty cool stuff.....just curious, what poundage is the old guy pulling now days?
Yes, Ron is a pretty good dude. Nice to see you guys out having a good time on a beautiful day.
Dang, sorry I missed Greg's call last night. I would've loved to have shown you boys a thing or two about shooting. Ron called me tonight Roger and said he was enjoying a victory drink of Woodford Reserve Double Oak bourbon.
He also said you don't have to be a young good looking eye batting female to get out of a speeding ticket -------you just have to have a NorthernMist longbow on the back seat and a trooper going to the same shoot the next day.
How cool is this?.......Way!....I'm saying....!!
Thanks for sharing!!!
God bless,Mudd
Ron has always been one of my heros, and even though I don't know him personally I know he is a great guy and a class act in promoting our great sport. Keep it up Ron.

The bow he was shooting yesterday was 45#......but that's just the bow he bartered for at the shoot. I honestly don't know Ron's hunting weight. I do know that in his younger days he pulled some very stout bows. If I'm not mistaken, he had a 100# Howard Hill longbow.

I did catch a break from a very nice deputy. He shoots a recurve, and his Dad shoots a longbow. I made him laugh when he asked about the mosquitoes at the shoot, and I said "Well, we doped up pretty good before we went out". That was probably the first time someone used that terminology during his work day, and didn't go to jail (obviously I was talking about bug dope :p )
I talked with Ron and he helped me get an arrow fixed after I had to pull it out of a tree. Seems to me he did mention (several times) that he did whip some serious butt :)
Ron is hunting with bows between 40 and 50 pounds now. I believe the 1959 Kodiak reintroduction bow he just got is 45#.
Geeze Roger, You tripped him and made him shoot from his knees and it looks like he has a squirrel on his leg. That man cant be shook I tell ya :p
I seen Ron get the stink eye going a time or two. Hard to beat him then

Yep...my big mistake was making a near perfect shot, and saying "You can't beat that". He said something about the horse I rode in on and center punched that little IBO circle. :scared: :scared:
Old! Heck, at 71 I'm just trying to keep up with him.
I found out, one day at the first Compton's rendezvous, DON"T TALK TRASH. Especially if you are beating him(or keeping up). One itsy bitsy comment and you've had it.
Ron is a class act the best lefty around,I really would like to meet him, maybe he will make a vacation in Italy :biglaugh:
I've never met Ron but he reminds me of this big dude (just click on the image its a brief 8 seconds of video). (http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh271/chinook907/th_MVI_2417_zps646684af.mp4) (http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh271/chinook907/MVI_2417_zps646684af.mp4)
Ron is about 60 grit with a 400 finish.
Gotta respect that.
Killdeer

You do definitely have a way with words. First time I've heard that one :)
Killy, you have a way with words.
Killy, you have a way with words.
Killy, you have a way with words.
Killy, I think it's unanimous then :)
Hey!
This is about Ron!! :readit:
Killdeer (thanks!) :biglaugh:
We do not call him the King of the Whitebeards for no reason...long live the King
DDave
He's an archer poker player. Suckers you in thinking you got him beat. Then he spanks you good at the end. You walk away with your head hanging down.lol
I just got home from a long weekend to find this thread. Roger called me a "Curmudgen"..I thought it was a term of endearment.. :dunno: Then I Googled it. It said "an old bad tempered, difficult, cantankerous person"
There might be an opening at Shrew Haven deer camp this fall....anyone interested?
Chuck, that "squirrel" on my leg is actually the handle of my cane with a wolf's head on it... "Lobo" LaClair.. :D

......must be able to push large curmudgeon around in a wheel chair and have an extreme dislike for fancy cigars, good bourbon and apple pie. Dishwashing skills and fire tending skills preferred.
All kidding aside I had a great time shooting the coarse with Roger and Greg, two of my good hunting buddies.(we missed you Ray) They both drove a considerable distance just so we could share the day together. I think they conspired to let the old man win and I appreciate the gesture. :archer:

I don't believe there was a conspiracy Ron. Greg said something about a recent hand surgery, but he's always bringing up some kind of excuse. ;)
Wow, time flies when you're having fun. That picture is pre-second cabin construction. It also looks like I'm holding(brown coat in middle) the prototype for the Super Shrew Little Favorite recurve. That picture is probably 10 years old and seems like yesterday. :campfire:
I wish to heck it was a conspiracy....I was honestly trying to win!
Ron gets better under pressure, that is for sure!
Full disclosure: THEY BOTH BEAT ME. Greg is a darn good shooter, and he quietly whipped me and gave Ron a run for his money.
I have resigned myself to the fact I was whipped by a guy with a cane and a Greek Cheese Monger.
I need Cosgrove to come to more of these things, so I can finish somewhere North of last :knothead:
  Here's to old guys :clapper: :clapper: you young whipper snappers will get your turn in the barrel I'm sure.
Well...... Old soldiers never die, do they?.....
Old Cav Scouts just fall back and regroup.... :bigsmyl:

I'M INTERESTED.
homebru
P.S. predators don't wait around
Yesterday, when I was young
there were so many bows just waiting to be strung
so many feathered shafts to send upon the wind
I never thought the time for that would ever end
A thousand hunts I planned, I dreamed they'd be so grand
but some just slipped away like weak and shifting sand
I never seemed to have the time to make them real
now late in life it seems I've lost some of my zeal.
Yesterday, when I was young
the hills I climbed were steep, but I crested on the run
now it seems the valleys are where I prefer to be
my legs are old, no longer do they want to carry me.
Youth and strength it seemed could conquer anything
no challenge left untried, no bow I couldn't string
I gave no thought to what the future held for me
I only knew that arrows on the wind would set me free.
Yesterday, has past me by
but I still like to watch my arrows as they fly
the bows I shoot are not as heavy as before
and I don't shoot them quite as often anymore
Those hunts of years gone by, though they're in the past
I have such sweet memories, and those memories will last
So I can re live again, those Golden times back when
back when, I was young

Very nice
Jack!
I am sure he could whup me on my best shooting day. Looks like you all had fun!
Excellent Sir Ron!
Way to go Ron! :notworthy:
Would have been fun to be there. Roger, you'll just have to try to get him next time! :archer:
Ron and Roger just texted me pictures from the Great Lakes Longbow Invitational. I think they will have a little rematch tomorrow. Ron's cooking up fresh corn on the cob and a large chunk of venison on the prettiest bed of coals you'll ever see. I think he's trying to butter Roger up before he takes him to school on the range.
No finer comaraderie and felowship!
I can wash dishes!
