Title: Snuffers
Post by: txcookie on August 02, 2014, 03:56:00 PM
Gents and Ladies!!!

I am thinking about using snuffers this year. I got a bunch of them but can figure out how to get them scary sharp. Do I even need to? I have used 2 blades which are as easy to sharped as a pocket knife but these snuffers are giving me fits. I can get them sharp enough to cut with a file but when I go to hone I cant really improve the edge much?

use search to get all the answers you can stand to read.  If you are working two edges at once they will never be as scary as a two blade(physics and edge angle) If you want two blade scary sharp Hollow grind them two edges at a time and there are many ways to do it.  Just search here for Ryan Rothharr(sp) or Snuffers.

Personally I don't think it is necessary but it works really well to hollow grind!

Yeah you need to learn to make them scary sharp. I did a video on sharpening 3 blade heads that makes it pretty easy but darned if I can find it.

I found that Snuffers get shaving sharp after pushing them on a large file, and then stropping on leather with polishing compound.

I sharpen mine with a file pretty rough and strop them on my belt, gives a very nasty jagged edge

I sharpen them two blades at a time with a sharpening V. Then use a strop. They will shave hair off my arm. I finish them with a light coat of Vaseline.

Been using the Snuffer Tamer for years w/ excellent results. If you use correct technique, you won't have the strength issues that many will post about but I only shoot the 160 grainers.

I put my Woodsmans on a file or stone then polish with a strop.  None of the deer on my wall complained of them not being sharp enough.
