Awesome! Better than the lottery!
Your only the second guy that I personally know to draw one. I've applied but never got one. The other guy got a cow tag.

Also- there was an article in Trad Bowhunter a few years ago about a guy from KS who did his homework at the Fort. He harvested a nice bull.
Congrats!
Way to go. Are those Ft. Riley elk mainly above timberline? :bigsmyl:
wow. cant wait to read how this one turns out. congrats!!
Yes, these tags are once in a lifetime. I am going to try to contact someone from Fort Riley on Monday to see if I can get maps of the area and any info that can assist me. I have read that the people on base really do everything they can to make your hunt successful.
I should have 2-3 weeks of vacation to use if needed.
Best of luck a congrats on the tag!!!
:bigsmyl: Congratulations! I'll babysit your daughters if you need me to. :goldtooth:
That's awesome, congrats, and Good luck!
Congrats!
Early in this post, someone mentioned an article in Traditional Bowhunter, about a guy that drew a Kansas elk tag. I called the magazine, but without a name or date of the article, they are not able to assist, so if anyone knows who the guy was or has a copy of the articlet I would greatly appreciate it. I would like to pick this guys brain for as much info as possible.
Look up Kelly G. Here on TG. I'm pretty sure he drew a tag a couple years ago and he's a soldier at Ft. Riley. Good luck brotha!
That is amazing!!
ttt to see if anyone can answer my question.
My buddy Jim Champagne drew a tag. His hunt was filmed I think. Been a couple years. We talked about it on a deer hunt a couple years ago. My brother was stationed at Riley. He used to talk about the hunt. I dont recall if either one said it was easy or not. In PA all you need is a corn cob and lead pipe:) Congrats on the tag! Actually I think my brothers buddy is a Biologist on post. Ive met him several times.
I went to Fort Riley Saturday, to get my elk permit and Fort Riley pass. While I was there I also picked up a deer permit. Since I will be spending alot of time there thought I would not want to pass up a chance at a nice buck. From what I have read, there are some real huge bucks there.
I spoke with the biologist and game wardens about which zones are best. They gave me alot of good information. One problem, at anytime parts of the base could be closed due to artillary fire.
I built a new two piece long bow and have been working on tuning. I finally got good arrow flight while bare shafting and with fletching they are flying great. Hopefully, I will send one through an elk.
Congratulations Rick. :notworthy:
Get in touch with Kelly, goes by kellyg here, he's hunted Riley a bunch and is a heck of a nice guy.
Wow. Congrats! Would love to do that myself :)
Rick- check with the KBA- maybe Shawn Harding. . They may know of the trad guy I mentioned regards the article.
Dan in KS
Thanks KSDan.
There are nice bucks on post. My brother shot a 160 a couple years ago. That was the biggest buck of the year for Riley.
