I am thinking about bow fishing for salmon on the Missouri River in South Dakota this fall; since the bird population is down so much. Has anybody done any bow fishing on The Missouri in SD? Where at? rules/regs? camping? Was it fun? Equipment? Thank you.
Britt,
Most states only allow bow fishing for rough fish, carp, buffalo, gar, etc. Check with SD Fish and Game for "rules."

I remember being surprised when I saw an article in TBH magazine about bowfishing for salmon - I thought the same thing that Arne said.
From the SD Fish and Game Handbook:
GAME FISH
Game fish may be taken with legal spear guns,
legal spears, and legal bow and arrow in the
following areas with the restrictions listed.
SEASONS & DATES:
Missouri River Inland Waters
Dates: June 15-March 15.
Waters and Areas: Francis Case - from Ft. Randall
Dam to Brule/Buffalo County line
Sharpe - from Big Bend Dam to US 14/34/83 Bridge.
Oahe - from Oahe Dam to SD/ND border.
Species: All game fish species except paddlefish
and sturgeon.
yes, there is a neat story in one of the past Traditional Bowhunter mags. It looked interesting.

Thanks for info. I read that article also. Got me a think'n.
That sounds like a good time!!
I have heard of some guys doing it up by Whitlock bay where they have the salmon ladder for egg collection.
I think that is where the guys in TB were doing it.
Now the bad news is that the salmon population has been down the last two years in Oahe.
We can bowfish for Kokanee salmon in several places in CO in late summer, early fall. I'd love to go but would need to buy a reel. Let me know.
