A couple years ago I lost my favorite hunting knife. They didn't make that model anymore so the search was on for a replacement. Like most of us I have way to many knives as it is but I'm pretty picky about my deer hunter. I have tried and bought a bunch of very nice and more expensive knives but I think this should do nicely.
Let's see those tried and true deer hunting blades.

Case XX drop point leather hunter
My go-to is a Lon Humphrey "Brute de Forge" Nessmuk style hunter. It has a flat grind 10xx carbon steel blade that is just wicked sharp and a gorgeous curly maple handle. It was a gift from my brother and he just read my mind, I couldn't ask for a better knife. Lon Humphrey is out of Ohio and makes some awesome blades that are surprisingly affordable for what they are; he's a journeyman smith with the ABS. Superb craftsman.

I use both of these while cleaning an animal. I use the curly maple one for general stuff, and the G-10 one for skinning. They are both Bob Dozier knives. The D2 really holds an edge.

Mines just a regular Buck knife but I really like it.

Nothing wrong with a Buck. I carried a 119 for a long time while I was growing up.
I made this from an industrial hacksaw blade, leather thong and hours at the grinder and whetstone. Blade is 4.25. Not pretty, but it's mine. Usually I have one of these. one is a western I found in an old Bear Western Quiver, The other is a K Bar with a leather handle that is quite universal.
I will carry these until I get a knife that has a little more sentimental value.
New for this year a Ben Tendick BRT Bladework custom (sponsor, check out his work over on the knife forum).
(http://i795.photobucket.com/albums/yy235/jalmay5th/Ben%20Tendick%20Compact%20Scout%202014/file-30.jpg) (http://s795.photobucket.com/user/jalmay5th/media/Ben%20Tendick%20Compact%20Scout%202014/file-30.jpg.html)
I traded my compound bows for a pair of custom knives made to my specifications. The maker liked my design so well he dropped his current line of hunting knives and replaced them with "my knife" and one that was identical but 1.5" larger. It's awesome for my use and preferences.
It's small enough to work in small game and just big enough be efficient on medium sized game like deer and hogs.

This Schrade Uncle Henry LB5 has been my "go to" knife for almost 30 years. This is actually the second, I broke my first one trying to pry a broadhead out of a tree about 20 years ago.

Just like the one I carry everywhere...
It's treated me well for over 20 years. It's cleaned nearly every animal I have taken

Finished this one up last spring and it served me well during turkey season so I plan on carrying it this deer season. 1095 with stag handle.

Sean I bet that Uncle Henry could tell a few stories.
Here is a little CRKT that I always keep in my quiver. I bought a bunch of these for Christmas presents about ten years ago and had to keep one.

It's a Ross Tyser knife, and my go to for about everything since I got it.
This is a knife that I helped design and is made for me by blacksmith C.L Matteo. The LaClair Skinner

Rob, It sure can. I bought the first one at the hardware store when I was about 16. It broke my heart when I snapped the blade off in a tree trying to pry my broadhead after a miss. I bought this one in the same store about 8 or 10 years later. Its cleaned a pile of trout, perch, ducks, geese, pheasant, squirrels, rabbits, turkeys, deer, and anything else I've taken. Its been with me to Georgia, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Montana, Illinois, Florida, and a bunch of trips to Maine.
I have a HUGE sentimental attachment to it!
I don't know about a stinky deer, but I plan on gutting an elk with this knife this year. Made by Colorado bow hunter Wayne Depperschmidt. (http://i.imgur.com/k2vstrP.jpg)
This is what I carry on my belt.
This is what I carry around my neck.
And the latter is what I have been using to field dress deer. Great little knife.
Though one of Ron's Shrew Blades is on my short list.
You guys are carrying some pretty nice blades. I picked up this one at a United Bowhunters of Illinois banquet many years ago and have been carrying it ever since. It was made and donated by Jeff Givens. It is some kind of pretty good stainless, sharpens pretty easy and holds its edge for a long time. It has been around the US, Alaska and Canada and done a bunch of cutting.

Alexander Traditional, You can't beat the Bob Dozier knives. I have fourteen Doziers in my collection. For deer hunting I take my Yukon Pro Skinner or Whitetail skinner and the small squirrel hunter....Dave
Some great looking knives!

I made this one ugly enough that no one would want it. The orange is bad but should save me from looking for my knife when I set it down this fall and unlike my good ones - no one will take it home.
Made for me by my buddy Deadsimple

Awesome thread!!

Like most hunters, I have more knives than I need including a couple custom knives that are very nice but when I get my deer the only one I have on me is my leatherman. Oh well, it does pretty well. Enjoying the pictures of the knives.
I have been carrying my dad's little old Western that I am very thankful to have. I lost may camera on a trip to Michigan so I can't post a pic.
Sold my go to knife while I was layed off...... But I do believe I have found a new go to ;) )

Yeah Dave I have a few more than these two myself, but these are the two I use the most. I just got a slim outdoorsman off his featured inventory. I got home today to see the slip of paper saying I missed the fed ex guy.

I used the Buck knife for a long time, last year I picked up the Silver Stag (virgin still) so this year I grabbed a Helle, it is a full tang ( they call it semi full or something) all rivets including lanyard hole go threw the steel. Helle Temagami Bushcraft is what it is called.
I have way to many knives to even begin to talk about. I do always carry in my pack a old Camillus trout and bird Finn that was my fathers and a Buck that was my uncles, Uncle Herb got me interested in Bow hunting in 1964.......
Best knife I've used and I've owned a bunch. "Light my Fire Fireknife". Mora's outstanding stainless blade with a fire starter which stores neatly and securely in the handle. All for about a $20 bill. My puma hunters pal
I am not much of a photographer but here are my go to knives. The Smith and Wesson drop point was purchased at the Camp Pendleton PX in 1977. I think its just about perfect for a hunting knife The AG Russel Cowboy folder was purchased at the blade show 2 years ago. It's in my pocket every day. I also have an AG Russel woods walker that I take to restaurants and a case copperlock i Keep in my pajama pants pocket. I have lots of knives but these are my favorites

That's OK - you can work your way up gradually. ;-)
Another I carry occasionally. Takes a great edge.

I have used this case trapper on all kinds of animals. I have never been much for fixed blades until I found this one by Ray Kirk. It's a keeper for sure. These two are always with me.

Looks like someone forgot to clean his knife after the last deer.
Picked up Ron's Skinner last summer and used to process several deer. I love the knife's look and functionality.

A lot of cool knives on this thread. The two I carry. Both made by Doug Campbell.

Man so many great knives on this thread. Just like looking at all of them.
X2 the Bucklite.
I can afford a Randall and have nicer & more expensive knives but the Buck is my first choice every time.

picked up cheap at an antique shop. love the look and feel
An old Western W36 on the belt and a Buck 112 folder in the pack that has been hunting with me for about 25yrs
(http://i62.tinypic.com/10cpv9f.jpg)
I always have a Buck 110-112 on my belt or backpack. Plus a solid blade custom for the hard work. I like to change the customs from time to time.
To me, this is the perfect hunting knife. I carry it in my backpack and a swiss army knife in my pocket.

My father made this for me when I was 2 in '85. His brother did the engraving. It's the only knife I need in the field. Light, simple, hand crafted.

Buck 110
That is an awesome knife Machino. I love the history.
Visiting the kids, so this is the only picture on my phone. All blades except the large Livesay have been used on game. I carried the Buck on my belt and the schrade in my fanny pack for many years.
My wife has claimed the schrade, so i now carry the livesay air assault in my fanny pack. After re-profiling the the air assaut I now use it for everything from processing game to splitting kindling for my solo stove. I need to make a leather sheath for hunting to tone down the tactical look, doesn't match the long bow.

robtattoo, I sure don't find anything to dislike about it.
That has to be a universally useful knife. I can't think of any chore short of chopping down trees you can't do nicely with that one.
These three cover 50 years of deer hunting.

Gutted my first deer in 1965 with the little Mora on the left.
My wife gave me the one on the right when we
lived in Alaska in 1973.
My daughter gave me the folder in the middle. She found it in Italy.
My next one is in my shop about ready for scales.
I'm with Stumpkiller...Izula II is hard to beat. It's always nice to come out of a chest cavity after cutting the esophagus with all your fingers! I'll throw in a 4" fixed blade if I have to quarter and pack out...Forschner boning knife back at camp.

I use the big knife for making ground blinds, splitting firewood etc. The second knife (Buck Vanguard) is the one I use the most for field dressing deer size game. I just redid the handle on it and now it feels good in the hand. Schrade folders. The third knife is a Schrade Sharpfinger a handy little knife. The other 3 are Schrade folders.Nothing fancy or expensive but they get the job done. I'm saving my coins to purchase a Bark River or GSO.
