Title: Best head for a 700grain arrow?
Post by: Stixbowdrew on July 16, 2014, 09:30:00 PM
Hey guys I've been kicking this around for quite sometime now and I thought I'd poll the gang here. What would you use for a broadhead with this set up: 68# hybrid longbow pulled to 31" with a 2219 and 200grain tip. This bow shoots very hard and fast with my long draw. What do you think would be a deadly set up for this thanks!

I vote for the Centaur Big Game head.  With a screw-in insert its 218g.

Give a TreeShark at 190 grains a try.

For deer, I'd probably shoot one of Big Jim's 3 blades.  If 200 gr was my limit, it would be an Ace Super Express.  The Grizzly Kodiak would be a great choice as well, but you're liable to get it stuck in a tree on the other side.

By the responses so far you can see that we have a lot of great heads available these days.  I would go with what flies for you or what you already have.  I'd even consider using an adaptor to make a 150 grain glue on into a screw in.  I think you would actually have to try very hard to make a bad choice here.

With that much horsepower I'd be shooting the largest three blade head I could find.  Might step down to a two blade if chasing buffalo.

With that amount of power,I would and weight arrow,I would definitely want something tough. For two blades,I think of 190 gr Tuffhead,200 gr Grizzly Kodiak. The big Jim head would be great but is too heavy for what you want. You could use a 200 gr,screw in VPA Penetrator or their 200 gr Penetrator.

I think JimB meant to make one of those VPA heads into a Terminator...and I second both those choices

I have used a very similar set up for years, with great success. 32",  2219, four fletched, and mounted with 250 gr Woodsman Elite. Arrow weight is around 750 gr. I have also used a standard Woodsman 125 gr glued on to a 100 gr adaptor. My bows are 31" draw 65# to 74#. Mike

Thanks guys tons of possibilities I think I've narrowed it down to a 200 grain woodsman elite, Simmons tree shark with adapter, or a centaur battle axe with a glue in glue on insert.

I think you will find the 200 grain Woodsman Elite is the same as a 200 grain VPA Terminator...as I recall VPA makes those heads for Woodsman

How much difference is there between the 125 elite and 200? I already have half doz. of the 125s could just bump up to a 100 grain 22 series insert

I know you said you have them narrowed down, but...... 160 grain snuffer on a 40 grain adapter is a great affordable head. You could expect two holes on anything you shot with them out of your setup.   With a 1 1/2" hole, great blood trails are the norm and they can really turn a marginal shot into a quick recovery.

The snuffer suggestion was made to me by a friend, I might have to try that as well

Also consider the Simmons Tigersharks. I'm becoming more interested in trying them out after seeing a post on the Simmons Facebook page where a guy took a Cape buffalo with one!! Granted it was a wheelie bow, but all the more impressive that it didn't deform at the higher fps and did a complete pass through.
