Is the tip broken in that picture?  It's been bugging me all day?  Lol

I'm sure Bill will be back to answer your question, but no, the top isn't broken. It's stuck into the piece of foam a little bit. The tips on these are very pointed.

There is going to be a lot of blood on the ground this fall from these heads! They've already accounted for three turkeys and a bear for me personally.  Looking to add antelope, elk, and whitetail this fall!

No the tip is not broken off. It was stuck in a board for the picture. I'll post a picture of one not stuck in a board just as soon as I get it.

I apologize if I offended anyone, I looked at that picture several times and just couldn't figure out what was going on. Certainly not how I would have staged it, but I'm not in the marketing field.

Yippee!!!! Soon as I get some more money, I'll be ordering some more.

Tippit,
I'm pretty sure that's how they are meant to look! Of course, we are all responsible for adding the beautiful, bright red!

Bill set me up with the Grizzly Instinct heads for a trip I just completed. I was on the island of Molokai and hunted axis deer for ten days. I probably had 50 deer at ranges under 30 yards, but never pulled the string. I can't say how the Instinct performs on big game, but I can tell you that these are completely premium broadheads. No shortcuts...no burrs...nothing but near-perfect steel and wicked killing power. They look like you could drop one accidentally and penetrate your foot completely.

I'm confused. I thought they came in at 190.... Is that with the screw-in adapaterare or are they 200 glue-on?

I want some new woodies with the Instinct on the killing end. Hunting season is getting close and I'm starting to get the itch!

The farrel on the 175 is 11/32" in stead of 23/64". That is one way we can drop weight off of the 200's and still use the same dies for both heads.

Blano the small run of 375 heads did average just about 190 but there were several I had to scrap because of voids in the braze.

Are they double bevel or single bevel only? Would be interested in double bevel so to sharpen them on a grinder like Snuffers...

Somebody makes a single bevel 3 blade?

They are not single bevel.

Red Feather Archery in Oregon makes both a glue on single bevel 3-blade and a one-piece screw-in single bevel 3-blade.

I have shot both - into foam only - and the construction is excellent.

Keep the wind in your face!

Shoot straight, Shinken

can you imagine the hole from a single bevel 3-blade,,,,, sharpening would be a hassle I think though.

HUMMM...I think it would be counter productive. The 3 single bevels would be trying to twist when going through tissue but the 3 blades sticking up would make it very difficult for the head to turn. Because there are 3 separate blades sticking up. The head would be trying to move a lot of tissue to actually twist.Just my best guess though. I dont have any actual experience with a single bevel 3 blade.
Bill

My thought on a single bevel 3 blade would be it would be tough to sharpen. If you can't sharpen the blades super sharp then it wouldn't help penetration.

Looks great Bill.  I love the needle tip that looks to be very strong.  Safe to say you will get no, or very little tip curl shooting through deer sized critters?
Title: Re: Instinct 3 blade
Post by: varmint101 on July 12, 2014, 08:56:00 PM
Nope, not a problem to sharpen the RFA heads.  Quality steel and could get them sharp quickly.  No experience on critters, but they would turn like a single bevel two blade in a target.

Bill, I have to say those heads look mean!  I have no money, but I'm still going to try and get a few before deer season!

The cool thing about Bill's three blade is the tip is a separate solid insert brazed in.  That puppy is one solid/mean machine.  Unless you are hunting New England rock walls, I don't think you'll see bend over tips!

These heads are all glue on at this point. They are 175 without the insert. We just got in a bunch of inserts to offer along with the Grizzly's. We will also be offering all the Grizzly's as a screw ons shortly.

awbowman if you want me to put you on the list for 175's I can do that. We do not want your money until the heads are ready to deliver.

Gotcha on the list awbowman.

Felix, We do have the long aluminum inserts. IF I remember correctly they are 42 grains. We do not have any that are 50 grains.

EZ TJ    my first gaze at that picture told me the very same thing (broken).  Had to really stare at it to see the real action.  Sometimes, when you see a certain thing, your mind tells you that's it and it won't change.  Been thru that a lot in my former life (career).

Broadheads look great and I am certain they will work fine.

I'll have a few dozen 175's by late next week. They are prototype heads. I have ordered the steel to make a run of 175's. We plan to stock them as well as the 200's. As far as lighter than 175 grain. That will require new dies to be built and will not happen this year.
Thanks for your interest

Can I ask how hard these are to sharpen?  Any special tools needed or just lay them flat and slide back and forth?
Title: Re: Instinct 3 blade
Post by: Sockrsblur on October 27, 2014, 10:50:00 PM
I found them easy to sharpen. Just use a good flat stone, I invested in some new diamond stones that are true. Sounds to simple but I was trying to use old files and old stones with poor results so maybe it's worth saying...

Mike, I'm sure that is the weight without inserts.

Daniel, I'm with Sockrsblur. Good flat stones, and just lay them flat. They're so easy, even I can sharpen them. Lol.

Let me know when you got the 175 grain heads ready to ship. Please put me down for a dozen to try out.

Thanks Bill,

btw... what is the width and length on these things? They seem to have a good wedge shape to them.

175gr without inserts on mine &

2 3/4" x 1" kirkll.

Admittedly this is my first time using 3 blades but the tips seemed so fine, needle pointed that I beveled them down to a slight tanto like tip. My thought was to increase their durability. Easily done by lifting the base up and dragging the tip backwards against a stone on all 3 sides.

Kirk, they are the same size as the 200 grain. The reduction in weight is achieved by making the ferrel sections steel slightly thinner. No structural loss either as there are three ferrel section and the thicker blades sandwiched all together.

The actual production run of 175's will be 2 7/8" long and 1 1/8" cut. The same as the 200's are. Those weights are without inserts.

I sharpen my heads just like James suggested. If the needle point worries you its easily removed the same way he suggested. One added note though. Do not make your pyramid tip very large. Just remove enough to get rid of the fine needle point. One thing I have noticed over the years. When I would put a large pyramid on the tip of any 3 blade. I would see a lot more bruising around the entrance hole. The only explanation I could come up with was the added force it took to start that pyramid tip over the finer tips.
I don't even remove the needle tip on these heads. We use a different steel up front so that it holds up better.
Bill

Kirk, I have you on the list for some 175's.

I'm shooting gold tip 35/55 right now with 165 field points. If I shot this head with inserts do you think I would need a stiffer spine?

That would depend on your set up,  arrow length, & draw weight, and how far  your shelf is cut to, or past center.  You'll have the broad head plus the adapter weight which combined should run about 220 grains. you will definitely have to adjust your strike plate thickness, or trim arrows for an extra 55 grains up front..... if you are only jumping up 10 grains, you should have no problem.

Post by: Benjy on October 28, 2014, 06:52:00 PM
I have killed 3 deer with the same head. I am using the 200 grain heads. I barely get rid of the needle point by lifting the back of the head 1/4" off the file, 1 stroke around the head 2 times.

I use a new Nicholson file with light pressure pushing the head into the file. Then I put Jewelers Rouge on cereal box cardboard and pull the head backwards around 60 strokes. Hair popping sharp!

Awesome Heads!
