Let's see them, Ladies and Gentlemen! I'd love to see pictures of your Berry bows. I'm thinking about ordering either an Appollo or a Viper. Does anyone know the wait time is on a Berry?
Dennis
I have a ton of Berrys pics. Seeing as how I own most of his models.
Where in IL are you? I'm from right around STL in Collinsville. I'll let you shoot them all you want.
Two Argos ( vipers no longer are made, the Argos is it's replacement )

Hey guys, those are absolutely beautiful bows. From my research, Berry bows are excellent bows! The craftsmanship is first rate for sure.
Brian, I live in just south of the Wisconsin state line. Too far from St. Lou, but thank for the offer! BTW: Good grief! You have a stable full!
I have an addiction!
BUT the bright side is , they say admitting it is the first step to recovery lol
Beautiful bows, Rob! Love those white lams, Pat!

This isn't making my wait for my Taipan any easier. I still have a couple months or more wait. Thanks for the pics, though! :jumper:
ronp......good things come to those who wait......
I've got a Taipan that James just reduced the weight and refinished for me-born 1996 for use on a safari, that according to James was used to make a one shot kill on a lion. Was 64" 61@28 1/2, now 54@28. Original owner had a strip of fiberglass added in core of limb to provide a "harder" shooting bow-limbs are cocobolo over core of osage and bamboo, riser coco and osage. Killed my biggest buck to date with this bow back in 2009.

I always said that my next Bow would be another HHA....But you guys got me to thinking JD....
LOL - true enough, Brian (although you are right there with me).
I'm kind of ruined. Take it as a cautionary tale guys - don't let that Berry Bug bite or you too will spend your days on that waiting list and trying to decide which bow to pull off of the rack to hunt with!
My other Berry is a Yaweh, 64" 58@28. I used to have a Renaisance, a Viper, and another Yaweh, but decided I needed to thin the herd and got rid of them. Now I have way more bows than I did when I got rid of my other Berry's. Therefore, using my deductive reasoning, had I kept those Berry's, I wouldn't have as many bow as I have now, so it must be James' fault I have so many bows. Yeah, it's James' fault (at least that what I'm telling the wife)!!!
My Yaweh.

Wish I could tell you the story behind the "cockroach" on James' bows. But, that might offend another sponsor on this site. :saywhat: :bigsmyl:
So, if you really want to know, gotta call James.
Ric O'Shay should I feel slighted since neither of my bows have a "cockroach" on them?....lol
God bless,Mudd

Get used to always waiting! James bows are worse than Lay's potato chips!
Just plan on something like this....
James: Hey Rob, you lucky dumb &$%#, you're next again.
Me: James, what woods are you gonna use in my ________?
James: I've got something special in mind this go 'round. I'm thinking___________......
Me: Sounds great, and next time you're around that dang book of yours, put my name back on the list again would ya? Oh, and did you hear the one about the........
:D
Green pretty much nailed it. I've been on James list non stop for 2 years now LOL. The wait keeps getting longer , but at least now the wife forgets about the last one ha
Everyone, I'm so flipp'in confused now. I don't know which model to choose. Thanks to all your beautiful pictures of these Berry bow, I'm at a loss. Here are my must-have options. Please help me focus in the best model. I want R/D design (not a Hill Style longbow), with low hand shock. I want a locator style grip. Does Mr. Berry make red elm limb cores?
Thanks to everyone for feeding my future addition! :notworthy:

MJB,
Looks like you have begun/continued this addiction. I haven't ordered mine, so there is still help. LOL. Forget all that, I'm jumping in with both feet. BTW: what is the wait time on one of these beauties?
I'm going to let Brian answer you on this one LBf1, you're right up his alley with those questions.
Okay, Rob! I'm holding my breath!
You just made my day asking about the red elm cores!!!!!!!!! You will know why I'm so floored when you talk to James, and he WILL blame me lol
Yes he does, but you have to twist it out of him. My vixen, Misty dawn, and Morningstar are all red elm. My taipan has red elm also.
He is only building the Argos and Taipan duo-flex (r/d) models as far as duo-flex goes.
The Argos is a sweet sweet shooter and very quick, stable, quiet. It is the standard riser and the classic look.
The taipan is his reverse model, also quick , stable , and very quiet.
My taipan is my most accurate shooter for me, and I literally have not found an arrow it won't shoot at my house . Everything from 40-70 spine. My other bows tune easy and shoot great but the taipan just eats all arrows. It is also extremely point able and falls on target by itself it seems.
The taipan is what I'll be shooting in the Worlds.
James does locator, but he makes his grips narrow and the locators are minimal SO make sure your clear on what your wanting for sure. Personally I love the grips he puts on.
Maybe I shouldn't tell about the little bug on the limb........ it's a cricket which is suppose to bring you good luck.
Oh and I'll say it , red elm cores are the best cores in all of archery
After that last comment you may want to tell James you don't like me, it will keep you on his good side LOL
Okay Dennis, there you have it. Straight from the bamboo hatin' horse's mouth. If James sees this thread.....his response may get it locked down!
Rob, you know I'm right.........
One thing's for sure. James sure has some entertaining customers! The one above me is definitely an out of work comedian. :biglaugh:
It's not my fault the Texas heat has fried your noggin so much that you can not see obvious truths, like red elm is far superior to the grass clippings you call a core wood :)
Dennis - I sure hope you're on the phone getting in line while Brian and I take this to text so as not to clutter up the internet with his flawed thinking. :D
Dennis,
Rob just doesn't want the truth to be out there for everyone to know!!
I would give James a call. He can point you in a good direction, (minus his core choice)
His DAM core is amazing, you should ask him about it
I just called Mr. Berry and spent 1:13 minutes on the phone. He's great!!!! I will be ordering an Argos soon!
Good call
So.........
What core
Red Elm? Brain, Your a sick, sick man. ..Me
I'm twisting Mr. Berry's arm on the red elm, but I haven't yet decided. Looking for something different than bamboo, but how do you argue with Mr. Berry? I trust his judgement and am leaning toward his boo recommendation. I really want red elm though, so I may dig my heals in. LOL.
You can trust him on ALOT, the boo....... I think the high altitude he plays in has taken a toll on his thinking there
OK, So both of you guys need to take a pee test....mE
Word is that James' particle board cores are the next big thing.
Brian...
Boo rules, just saying
:)
Also the blood wood dam core in my bow is the best part about it! I love it!
Jon
Pat- Quiet please!!! I'm trying my best to keep the lid on James' particle board limb. If word gets out, everybody will want some of it. Even Brian will forsake his red elm cause that PB stuff is gonna blow the specs off all the other woods.
I have been wondering very seriously about a yew cored Northstar. Maybe with a strip of blond bamboo in the middle. I am not sure if it would have that spunky cast that I have gotten used to.
Is there a reason no one mentioned the wait time.
Cause the wait is worth it :)
I have about a year on my current wait and when James gets to me I probably still won't know what I want exactly, like a kid in a candy store!
Jon
Even though the older one gets, the more the wait time matters, my real reason for not having a Berry collection like some of you guys is the Morningstar that I already have. I know it is suppose to be slower with reversed riser and my less than 27" draw, but it is not. It is the only lefthand bow that I want to shoot, I do not think that adding more bows will change that.
I agree Pavan. My morningstar is the bow in my hand 90% of the time.

How's that grip working out??
How does it shoot??
Is the grip straight or is there a slight dish? I can't clearly tell.
longbow fanatic 1
James told me 9 months to a year.
It's really a great bow Bud. It's a straight grip, 1" wide and 2 3/16" deep with the leather. I wanted it to have the ALS look when braced so no Berry tip overlays. James put 2 wedges in each tip. It's 52#@28" and I can shoot bare shaft 29" 2215's and 2117's like darts. Very smooth draw. I'm using a brace height of 6.5'

If I have him build me one I'll use yours as an example. I'd want 2 1/4" deep. My gosh what a nice looking bow. Your shelf is on the wrong side for me though. Thanks. I think I'm in trouble. Again.
Hmmmmmm I just came up with a really good way to make some extra cash.I have coffee at Jame's every morning and is order book is sitting right there in front of me. Now for a low low price of $50 I can rearrange that order book where you will be getting that beautiful bow in 3 weeks. He would never know the difference. So start sending those $50 dollar bills guys. :biglaugh:
Beautiful bows.... Thanks ;)

I spoke with James the other day for a good while. Awesome guy, with loads of stories and tips. Next July can't come soon enough....Hopefully next September, I'll be taking my Argos to the stand.
I got bit :banghead: by the bug this past spring and have added 5 ASL so far to the stable...Good thing my wife doesn't count very well :D .
Beautiful bows!
You all leave James alone for a while so he can build my taipan :)
My Taipan first DaveT! LOL. You have enough bows already :biglaugh:
I know my number is getting close........
I'm still a ways out. Make sure to share pics when you get your Taipan, Dave!

Mr Berry is making my new Vixen this week. I spoke with him at great length on the phone and can't wait to see the new addition to my family of longbows. She will be 66" in length and 54 lbs at my 26" draw length. Osage riser, Carmelized Boo cores and brown glass on the back & belly. I will post some pics when she arrives ! Tradcat
Congrats Tradcat, that's going to be one of those "can't put it down" bows.
Congrats! We can't wait to see pics :)
Jon
Took my Taipan for a 4 day goat scouting trip.

Good looking scenery and a good looking Taipan!
I didn't think you could enhance a scenic backdrop like that.....but you did! Nice looking setup you have there lone hunter.
I have on good authority that a particular Taipan that has appeared in this thread took 8th in Men's Longbow at IBO World's and was 5th in the 3Rivers Hunters Challenge MLB.
Mike that is a beautiful bow! I'd love hear the wood specs on that one!
And congrats to Brian and his Taipan!
Jon
Mike, see any goat? how far away? ...James
PS, GREAT GOING Brain!!! ..Me
My Vixen. It's my favorite shooting ASL.

cahaba love your quiver and arrows, bow is ok.LOL...mjesa
Jon, the riser wood is the same as yours, dirty boo cores, toasted curley maple venners back and belly. With some type of orange wood in the riser that to my eye gives it kind of an older native look to it. Have been reading J.A. Hunters books on East Africa and the bow reminded me so much of the native pics in the book that I named it "Masai."
James, saw goats every day. Plan is to stay in till I get'er done or run out of arrows. Minimal camp, travel light. Here's a couple at 100 yds.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/lonehunter1/blackleadridge025.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/lonehunter1/media/blackleadridge025.jpg.html)
I remember that look those billys are giving...Ahhh you just got a stick. ...seamj
Thanks James. The feller that built the bow seems to know what he's doing.
Good luck Mike! I'll be looking for the "I stuck a billy!" thread :)
Jon
cahaba, After 34 years you would think that guy would know a LOT more then he does, I think he lucks out some times. ...sajme
James my daughter said the fires were really bad around the Medical lake/Spokane area?
The skies have been affected clear out to Iowa from those fires. If they reach James's stash of balsa wood and particle board lams, I could just as well sell my telescope.
Some fires are good for the forest, but when that brushy regrowth starts burning it can become a serious problem.
So, now the wait begins........I called James and got on the build list........It's going to be a long hard wait but I know it will be well worth the wait. I will have a Morningstar........
Nice! Congrats ron! That's the best way to go since no one wants to give up their best bow ;)
Jon
Ok. New question. I'm considering buying a Taipan used. It's 68" 49@31. I pull 28", so it should be about 40@28. How does the Taipan zip arrows at 40 lbs?
My taipan is 45-46@ my draw. I shoot. 500 grain woodies from it. I'm a three under shooter and it gives me a point on of 28 yds. It holds it's own at its weight. The key to it is it's pointability, and smoothness. I'd say it's shooting right in line with any other r/d bow in its weight range , if it's not a souped up model of course . The taipan is not an aggressive r/ d bow .
I wouldn't trade or sell mine for ANYTHING. I keep batting around the idea of getting one a little heavier but this bow is just dead on accurate and throws and arrow real good.
Shooting 2016s at. 27.5" and 125 up front it's a FLAT FLAT trajectory all the way home.
I've owned a lot of bow and I OWN a lot of Berrys and the taipan is hands down my favorite , closely followed by the Morningstar
Thank, Brian!

You better start showing that Taipan and Morningstar some love i.e. update your signature element :)
I cannot open my signature stuff on my profile.
Admin locked me out of year 2 years ago. So it is as it stands. No worries, I didn't follow the rules
I have to check out a taipan when I get a chance but my favorite is the vixen by far I'm very impressed with this bow!
I have a vixen - great bow. Last time I was up at Jame's shop (jan) I had the chance to shoot a morningstar and a taipan..... I ordered the taipan :) I love my vixen but that taipan was awesome.
Need more pics in the thread so...
Here's a Vixen I tried out and is currently en-route to a Gentleman in Texas!!!

Just got of the phone with James and got the news that he's had a; in his words - "slight hiccup". Keep him in your prayers  . He's still as up beat as ever though.
I know the guy in Texas your sending that to... he is gonna be happy happy happy.
:)
Jon
Prayers sent
I hope he is doing OK.......
Do any of you gents know the actual string length and brace range is for a 66" Taipan?
Is build a 63", and shoot it around 6 3/4" up to 7 1/4" but mine gets buzzy there down to 6 1/2
Thanks, But its not really that hard to build for a gang of truly great guys, and for that, I THANK YOU, That's not just words.
Monday I became blind in my right eye(Detached Retina) Now the way I see it is Ive been packin around a pair for 62 years, lost one, Great to have a spare!
Ive said in the past"I have build so many of these guys I think I can do it blind folded" Well, It is a bit different(I started back to work today)and I am going to be slower for a while, Good news is, I only have to wipe off half the saw dust on the safey glasses, so that speeds me back up..lol
I will be running a bit behind for a while, Tell I become use to working this way, I am truly sorry for this, But I will catch up soon. Thank you all. James D. Berry
ps bows are taking twice as long now, But that means that they are going to be twice as good!!!
James - you should be able to build twice as fast as you can now look at only half the girls!
Prayers sent JD......
Tradcat
Rob, you think I looked mean before, you should see me with my eye patch, NOBODY going to mess with me now. ...one eye jack
Wow James I truly emphasize with you. You have my prayers. I am having some eye problems where I took a 16 penney concrete nail in my right eye and it destroyed some of the retina so I can at least partially understand. It really bothers me when I am stringlining limbs. You have to learn to not trust they eye and double and triple check everything. Anyway God bless and help you, Steve
ps Rob, Some of the big girls look half the size now, THIS IS GREAT!!!!! ONE EYE PETE
Sixby, Im in trouble now, I cant count to three. ...cyclops
Sixby, Im in trouble now, I cant count to three. ...cyclops
I sense a custom patch in the works. Brian....you in? I'm thinking an EYE.B.O. patch.
Custom patch all the way!!!
I'll supply the possum hide
Hey guys do you think I can git some Dingle balls on it? ..captin sam
In certain types of retina tears that lead to detachment, they are totally repairable if taken care of before scar tissue forms. I hope you have had this checked out.
pavan, spent all day Monday at VA and they shipped me over to Spokane Eye Cline, ..ME
James, I really admire your positive attitude. You are inspiring and a better man than me.
You have been in my prayers since I talked with you on Tuesday. Take care.
James attitude always makes me proud to call him a friend. He has dealt with, and continues to deal with, a variety of health problems, but what keeps him rolling along with a joke in his heart, is you!
His mad bow building skills are an extension of his devotion to archery and to his clients, because he gets connected to each one of us. His sharp wit, and sense of humor make my day every time I talk with him. He takes life's challenges as opportunities to rise above, and prove to himself and to us that nothing can deter him from his life's work of making us happy and proud to shoot his bows.
If anyone has any doubts that this man can't build his usual top quality bow one-eyed.....think again. He's already done it....for years, and has the equipment that he specially designed to build bows under these conditions when he had a cataract a few years back that put him in essentially the same situation (well,'cept this time he's gonna have a cool Possum skin eye patch with Eye.B.O. Winner embroidered on it, and sporting Dingle Balls).

Sorry to hear of your problems, James..
Getting older isn't much fun, I know..
Best luck to ya..

JD,
I think you should put the joke on 'Ol Rob and give me his place in line. That'll show him!! :)
You are an artist!!! Stay strong!!
Of all the things I could call JD from outstanding bowyer to amazingly skilled artisan, darn good archer, "friend" is the one that I cherish the most.
Prayers for you my friend as always.
God bless,Mudd
James I and I'm sue many more appreciate you. Take your time with your builds. Heck I would wait two years for one of your masterpieces! you have an amazing attitude and I am proud to know you and call you my friend.
James,
An eye patch on an old Navy guy is nearly like jewelry. Don't go as far as getting a peg leg, though; might slow you down even more.
Thanks for being an inspiration to all of us, and I don't say that to many old squids.
Centaur, if we had a "like" button I'd be hitting it for your words.
Mr. Berry by his attitude is showing us all how we can chose to face adversity.
You can chose to eat the sour lemon or you can chose to use it to make sweet lemonade.
God bless,Mudd

x2, well said
In the near future people will be asking, Is that a one eye JD Bow our a two....
Hang in there JD, Adapt and over come....
I am still hoping to hear that James will have a complete recovery.
Yesterday, I was out back shooting my new deer target with my Morningstar. An older gentleman with a new Honda scooter rolls up and wants to see me shoot one. From about 20 yards, I put the arrow in the top of the little heart circle. He says,"Is that where you want to hit the real thing? Lets see another one." Splat, a piece with half a nock and one feather flips up and landed on top of my garage, another chunk with two feathers hit the deer target's back legs, leaving the arrow dangling in the target. The old guy looks up at the roof, walked up to the target, picked up the two feathered piece, pointed at the piece in the target and said, "You missed the heart."
James we are pulling for you.
Pavan, some folks just don't seem to have a complement in 'em :-). Sounds like a couple of fine shots.
Samje, Way to keep a positive attitude! I look forward to another enjoyable conversation with you the next time we speak! Hopefully the specialist can work some wonders for ya, if not, I'm confident you'll adjust just fine!!!
Oh and... Where do we sign up for the collector patches, it'll probably HELP my shooting?!?!? (no dingle balls on mine though please) :D
Dang James I hate to hear this and I will pray for a complete recovery. Sure hope this doesn't mess up your hunting season..... take your time I will get my bow whenever you get her done - more imporatant that you take care of you right now.
Great thread!
James sorry to here that you are struggling with eye issues. Take care.
Rob
Well wishes and prayers for you James  take it easy.
Moots, Not struggling, Wrost part is this eye patch gets hot and that is not much to whine about. ..one eyed purple people eater
James, hang in there buddy I am sure it will work out fine. :clapper:
I see your renewed good looking website states not taking new orders under faq, will be calling to check my position on list.
Nice to hear from you James. I am trying to decide between a Morning Star or Taipan.
James combines artistry and functionality -- a bowyer at the pinnacle of his profession.
Well said Moots
Hope you a full recovery Mr Berry.....
Thanks to a TGer, I'm soon going to be the proud owner of a new-to-me Taipan! Yay!
I just got the call from James.....my Taipan is up. .. settled on Bubinga and wedge Apollos styled handle, bocote limb veneers under clear glass and of course bamboo core limbs. 57#, 64 Inches in length.
Dennis,
You have some good bows in your stable . Cherish them now, cause when you get the taipan they won't see much daylight :)
Dave, sounds great, minus the boo lol
I've done red elm before - prefer the boo boards :) But then again my shotting skills are not all that great past 20 yards

LOL,
Brian. I can't wait to shoot it and if you're right, I will probably clean out one or two of my stables. :big laugh: I've heard nothing but good things about James' bows! Mine is 66" 51#@28. It should be smooth.
Any more on Mr. Berry's bows?...........TTT
I should be getting my Taipan next week - can hardly wait to run some arrows through her. My all time favorite longbow is still my old Serpentine James made me decades ago - if it was just a tad bit lighter........
I'll post pics once I get her.
