Title: What bow would you want back?
Post by: Big Ed on July 09, 2014, 04:51:00 PM
As many of you know I have gone through a bunch of bows. And really can honestly say the only one that I would want back is a 64" Schafer Silvertip T/D recurve. Beautiful Walnut and Gray Dymondwood Flared riser. Sheep overlays on the riser and tips. I would love to remember who I sold it to. For the life of me I can't remember.   :bang head:
So what bow would you want back?
Oh yeah if you have my old Silvertip I need it back!!!

I once had a thunderhorn coup stick nothing real fancy but man I could shoot that bow. Don't quite remember the sats 52@26 I think it said. zebra wood and bubinga riser I think with red elm limbs. I would like mine back too!

A DM centaur I had built for me. Found it, made a trade for it and I've been looking at it for 2 weeks now destroyed by PO in transit. High dollar piece of firewood now!  Just needed to rant. But I did get it back.

I can think of several.  My problem is I keep coming across awesome specimens, but I just can't keep em all!  I have settled on a couple bows for at least a while.  My new no.1 is the St. Jude's Elkheart I just posted about.  It is perfect in so many ways it will keep my appetite for trying new bows in remission rather than full blown crazy.  LOL

Sounds odd, but a 26lb Bear bow of my youth.would love to shoot it a bit. And hang in my man cave. Parents sold it at gar sale after I left foe college.  Mad at them 35 years latter

Dan Quillian long bow with red elm limbs. Traded it years ago for a 9 mil because I shot it so much I got tendonitis in my bow arm. Had to get cortisone shots for it. Man it was the best shooting bow I ever owned. Won bow tournament's with it against compound shooters. This was before recurve stakes. I know I bring it up about once a month to friends how much I miss it.

Unfortunately, not one but a few.  A Harold Groves Spitfire Magnum two piece takedown; a Tom Jennings Smithwick Citation; and lastly a Frank Eicholtz Jupiter.  It is amazing how much smarter you get with age.

I trraded a vintage Howard Hill that while too heavy for me to shoot well, was in perfect shape, and one of the best looking bows I have owned.  The bow that I got in trade, an early Bear Take Down that was equally nice.  My only consolation.

My Hill Wesley Special, ebony riser, with boo under black glass, and buffalo horn tips. Not a mark on it when I traded it. What a foolish trade.

A Dale Dye one piece with, medicine points, Osage veneers, and osage riser.  I ordered the bow and waited almost two years for it to arrive.  Unfortunately, shortly after ordering it I had trouble with the right shoulder and had surgery shortly before it arrived.  Had to shoot left-handed for a couple of years.  Finally, I sold the bow two years after receiving it, thinking I would not be able to shoot right handed again.  A year after selling it the shoulder finally got better and I now do 90% of my shooting from the right side.

Last time I seen heard of it, Danny Rowen had it  and was giving it away as a Christmas raffle here on TradGang; Just because that is how Danny is (Damm, there are sure a lot of Good people here!).  Honestly, I can't say how it shot because of the pain I felt when trying to shoot it, but I'd sure like to put a few arrows through that bow.

It was accurate and drew smooth as a hot knife through butter. It had an aluminum handle and I traded it because I lived in Northern Michigan then and it made my hand cold in the late season. I wish I still had it because I now live in Georgia!

I've sold some, given away some, and have plenty still hanging on the wall.

Of the ones I've parted with, the Tamars Super Racli (Italian made) 66" 40@28 RD longbow would be the one I'd want back first. I sold it for a steal to a young lady getting into archery. I told her if she ever got rid of it I wanted first shot. She's never called. I'm guessing she still likes it. It was one quiet bow that loved GT Trad 1535s. I traded a post vise for it.

It's not a Cadillac bow, but it was a smooth good shooter.

I traded for a Lost Creek Life Ender. Bow was a right hander and I was in the process of switching to lefty. I sold it to a young lady getting started in Trad archery and who was looking for a pretty bow to start with. I now shoot from both sides and would buy that one back in a minute.

Great Northern Fireball.  At 43# it was my first "nice" bow and I mistakenly thought I needed to move up in weight to hunt.  Man, that bow just fit me...been chasing that feeling ever since.  Traded it on TG, and I know where it is, but haven't got her back...yet.  This picture was taken right after we moved into our new house, so please don't judge the purple paint

RER LX.  Great bow.  52@28.  Still don't know why I sold it.  Contacted the TG'er in Colorado I sold it to, but he had already sold it.  If you see this bow, I'd love to buy her back.

And a Mohawk I sold to Ron W, a Dwyer Original that went out East, and I THINK that's about it!

A Wes Martin 'Mosshorn'. It was 58"s and 44@28. The bamboo lams were a sorta funny greenish color. Last I heard Vermonster sent it to a reservation somewhere up north for some kids to shoot. If I can't have it I'm glad those kids do. Hope they're still enjoying it.

In almost 25 years (and about the same number of bows) of shooting recurves, I can honestly say that I never let one go that I wanted back. When I start thinking that the bow might not be the best for me, I usually wait about 2 years before selling. I have sold: Schafer, Widow, Assenheimer, Rose oak, Palmer, Martin, RER, Marriah, etc. and have no regrets. I currently have 4 with a Wes Wallace due soon. The only ones I have owned that I would never sell are my Habu and Hoyt Gamemaster 2. They shoot the best for me year after year.

I had two bows would like to have back...  One was a Buffalo Runner Spirit by John STrunk that I won at the Trad Bowhunters of Maryland banquet back in 90s...maybe 97 or 98.  Same night my truck was broken into at the banquet and everything stolen out inside including stereo...but I won a bow by damn! LOL  IT had been refinished by Rich Lopez....and later I sent it to John STrunk and he worked the tiller a little for me and refinished it and did the inkwork over again.  I sold it and regret sellign that osage bow...it was a fire bolt.

The other for emotional and not performance reasons...was another osage bow.  This was one made by Joe Mattingly...it was called Dog-Leg.  When he was near his end there was an auction to raise money to help him out and I donated a bow he made to help raise funds.  Joe and I talked about it quite a bit after his surgery....and right before he passed he sent a new bow he had made and named One Holer...little static tipped osage bow.  Both are sentimental...but Dog Leg is special.  :)

Well Guys I hate to be the guy that doesn't have any regrets but.....

I have been lucky enough to keep all the bows I would ever regret selling.  I put way too much thought into a bow before listing it.  Maybe too much according to my wife.

Bob Lee take down recurve, 64", 51@28", micarta riser and tips. I bought it used, couldn't get it quiet enough at the time but I've learned a lot since I traded it and am sure I could've solved it now. I shot that bow better than any I have ever owned before and since.

I have a self-imposed limit of bows. I just can't justify to myself owning more than I have right now. I have sold a few bows in order to get the ones I have now. My Blacktail VL and my Pronghorn are the best I have owned.

I do have some minor regrets about selling my Shrew CH to you, Ed. It was a very nice usable bow weight to me at 51#. I think what I miss about it was the handle design was just so different compared to my other bows. that and the maneuverability of a short bow (56").

I wish I could find my old 55# 1967 Kodiak Mag, that my ex wife sold on Craigslist a few years ago while I was put out of the house by an O.O.P.

I got back in the house after the divorce and found out why my son Tyler couldn't find the backquiver I had him looking for... Tyler told me one night a stranger came to the house looking for his mom. He had a piece of paper, listing an "Archery Set".

1 Kodiak Mag,Backquiver, and a bunch of arrows... GONE!!!!!

'63 Tamerlane (first year they were made).

Bought new and received it in January after I ordered in December of '62 so it had superb fine grained rosewood as it was one of the first out of the factory. Traded for a take-down when I got out of the Navy in '70, so my wife reminds me.

However, I would not shoot it much now if I found it.  Just look at it everyday as it was some super duper really beautiful bow.  The others I saw at the field archery tournaments later that year were not as good looking as mine in regard to the wood grain, color and interesting grain patterns. When they put those side plates on them in '64, Bear did no favors to the design of their most beautiful bows. I thought the side plates were ugly, and evidently so does many other people as the '63's are sought more now.  Like the old Black Widows which had painted risers (all did from '62 back). Fantastic designed bows, but the painted risers did little to show off the great design of the bows.  However, a lot the best shooters shot them.  Looks are important to me if I'm forking out money for the best.

Now glad to have a bunch of old Bears (Specials and Kodiaks) with Brazilian rosewood to look at and none of them cost me much compared to buying a new top end custom bow with fancy woods. These old Bear classics are a bargin for looks and performance.

Think I'm happy and very thankful with what I got ('59, '60, '62 Specials and '61, '62 Kodiaks and a few others).

Bear "Bruin" longbow, killed my first deer with it. I know where it is, it never gets shot, and he wont sell it back. Also a Great Plains recurve I killed many deer with that i gave to my step son. Somehow, he lost it, sold it, gave it away..., who knows. Would not have sold it, but gave it to him as something special. No appreciation.
