Hey guys,
I'm looking to get my wife a bow for her birthday (her request) and the leading candidate so far is a Sarrels Foothills. She will only be shooting 3D, and draws about 26". She doesn't like the typical recurve grip, and prefers the longbow. Any suggestions?
Wild Horse Creek. Kestrel in a longbow or Mariah in a recurve.
Sarrels have a 100% rep. Good choice. You might also consider a Toelke. Dan makes a stripped down version of the Whip that you can ask for that costs less if you don't want a full blown fancy Whip. There are many great choices out there. I keyed in on Toelke because of the A-1 quality and ridiculous short build times. My wife isn't fully enmeshed in the sport yet so she makes due with a 58" 26@26 OMP 3pc recurve.
Any of the Lost Creek models are hard to beat for performance and value.
My wife shoots a Ragim Matrix, but she's just starting. I'll just have to echo these guys on recommendations, we're all recurve here.
My wife really likes her Toelke classic longbow. She "outgrew" her first ( draw length lengthened and she's drawing more weight ), just bought her second, same model. These aren't on Dan's website these days, they're basically stock versions of the Whip; first was a "KDY" and the newer is an "RDY". I've shot both, and they are every bit as sweet, at least, as my Selway Lil Mag was, and my Javaman Falcon is.
That said, I like a little deeper locator grip and more palm swell, and love shooting my Falcon. If she likes that grip style, an appropriate size in an Elkheart or Falcon would be a super sweet bow.
Just my (limited) experience.
Nineworlds, you just described what I just described after you about the Toelke's. Wasn't even up yet when I started typing!
BDann, I'll send a PM about that KDY bow.
Julie absolutely loves her kanati's she's been through the gamut of bows and the nice small riser/handle design seems to fit just right. They are quite the performer too. They sure do launch an arrow
My wife has been shooting the same bow since 2001 (unlike her husband) It is a Legend Bow Co. and is a recurve. Jim Johnson was the Boywer and he is out of Missouri. I do not believe he builds bows anymore. Lori's is beautiful and the numbers are 28#@25" 60"
The cast is surprising and she shoots it very well.........

X2........but she started with a recurve back in the late 70s and now she wants to try a longbow so this winter I'm going to build her one. :)
My go to bow is a dwyer dauntless, so that's what I got for my wife to shoot. It's 30@28, so about 24 @ her draw.
I let dave pick the woods and he slimmed down the grip for smaller hands.
2006 Dale Dye Medicine point 3 piece recurve, 60" 37#@29" she pulls 29"+. No game taken yet but it's only a matter of time, she shoots plenty good enough.
I bought a A&H about 5 years ago. After the wife shot it I had to get another. Hers is 58'' and 43@28
Sarrels bows are hard to beat. Next time y'all are in the Austin area swing by and shoot some and see what see really likes. Sooner, the better he has a great sale going on right now!!!
My wife has shot her last couple of deer with a Lost Creek NAT. At 38# at her draw, it shoots 430 grain cedars straight through deer.
Currently she shoots a Arvin Weaver D/R osage "selfbow" 30# @ 28" (about 25# @ her DL)that I lucked into an amazing deal on. That being said, been thinking about picking her up something a bit more "modern". The Mad Dog Prairie Predator is at the top of a short list I've been looking at. Appears to be a lot of bow for the money and I've never heard anything but positives on here about his bows.
My wife shoots a 1955 Kodiak Special. 35 at 28. She wont let me get her anything else. She says, I like my bow why would I want another??? :dunno:
All I can say is, she and I are not cut from the same cloth.
You can say that again Charlie! Your wife is much better looking than you...
... mike ...
My wife shoots a Black Rhino longbow...pretty nice little bow.
Mine shoots holes in my hunting plans ;)
Liberty Bows Edge  64" 50lb at her draw

...the smile says it all
Her winning first round of a water jug competition last month at the Eagle Cap Traditional shoot - only been shooting bows for a little over 2yrs - all with a longbow, she's doing really well.

My wife just does a few 3/D's with me.....she now shoots a 14" Morrison ILF riser with cheap 30# recurve short limbs. 56" bow 25# @ 25", been at it just over a year or so and is doing very well. She claimed my 17" Zipper riser but the 14" Morrison seems to fit her better so I got my Zipper back!.......lol!
My wife is only a 3D shooter, can't get her to hunt. She has a RER Vortex longbow 56"/37# @ 28" and a RER XR takedown recurve 58"/30# @ 28" but has just ordered new limbs at 37#s. I did buy her a '69 Kodiak Hunter a while back, but she just wasn't comfortable with pulling 43#....I guess I'll just save it for me when I get older.
As for arrows, I made her Carbon Express Medallion 1100's and Easton Carbon One 1150's, both cut to 28 5/8".
You have the best problem that could ever face an archer. If my wife would shoot with me, I would buy her ANY bow she wanted. Be sure to post pics when her bow arrives. You are a lucky guy.
My wife just received two longbows. I surprised her with a Howard Hill Archery Co. "Cheetah", and our friend Steve Turay w/ Northern Mist presented her with one of his beautiful longbows (boy was I jealous :-)
She has been shooting an Acadian Woods "Tree Stick", another gorgeous bow from Tim Mullens. Now she gets confused on which bow to take out and shoot, LOL. She absolutely loves all three.
She also thinks all three are tremendous bows, however, the Northern Mist and the HH bow are so light in the hand, she says they're incredible just to carry around.
All three have no virtually no hand shock, what so ever.
Terry Harris
Put her on the phone to her mom or sister and she shoots a lot of bull.
35 lb EagleWing three piece that is 60 in heavy d and r. I built it for her short , 24 in draw and it stacks up past 26 inches . But it sure performs for a 24 inch draw.
God bless, Steve
My wife shoots a Bodnik 31# at 26in. But she wants something with a little more zip. Currently looking for a 35-40# longbow for her. Might end up ordering a new Mad Dog.
My wife shoots a Northern Mist Baraga 64" and 31@26.
You can't go wrong with a Sarrels!!!
You can't go wrong with a Sarrels!!!
My wife shoots a Tredway that Mike custom built for her a few years back. It's 31@28 so she is shooting about 25-26 at her short draw. She has always loved it. our Grand daughter shoots a great northern Baraga that we got used here on trad gang. It's 35@28 and she shoots it very well. I'M very blessed to have both to shoot with me.
We build great bows for gals but my wife's go to now is her Cyclone longbow. Its 37#@27" 62". Great hunting bow or 3D's. God bless our lady shooters!
Pinnacle II with longbow limbs. She doesn't shoot very often, but you'd never know it. She shoots that bow very well!
My wife shoots a bear recurve 25# @ 28" or a striker longbow 30# @ 28". The bear is her favorite.
My wife just shoots me down.......and she shoots that all the time...haha
My wife has a Bama Expedition 35@28 a Bear Tigercat 35@28 and she just got a Bama Royal D style longbow 37@28. I liked that one so much that I have one on the way too! LOL Hmm she just started shooting last year!
My wife will shoot me when I buy another bow... :dunno:
My wife shoots a classic 1962 Bear Polar. #34 pounds at her draw. Lots of beautiful classic bows out here on the used market.
Mine shoots the Dryad ACS RC and it has the most bang per pound drawn of any bow I've shot. Not sure how she will like the grip but it's sure a shooter!
Falco legend with a layer of carbon. She shoots #36@ 28. Cast is smooth and straight. Fine price to boot, not made in America though.
My wife who is a little thing shoots a Bear Grizzly, 42# @ 26". My daughter-in-law, being 30 yrs. younger, shoots a Hill Wesley Special 55# @ 26". They both shoot all day long at ETAR with my son and I.
When I can get her to shoot a stick bow, she has a BW SA 111 which I bought for her I think in 1995.
And she shoots better then me :-)
Habu Vyperkahn.
mine's a compound shooter...
I'm really no help.
Mine shoots a 66" Flatliner. 36@32"
