Title: 2014 MN deer season Bucks Only!
Post by: Mr. fingers on July 07, 2014, 06:07:00 PM
Just got the news that the 2014 MN deer season is bucks only in northeastern MN. Not sure about rest of state.
No antler less tags no lottery no management no intense harvest no hunters choice and no antler less for kids under 18  and even a bigger pill to swallow no either sex for bow hunters.
All in all I'm not surprised just bummed last winter was brutal  and the heard needs to rebound. It happened in the 90s  we had a few horrible winters in a row and it was bucks only for 4-5 years  which meant a lot less deer harvested. The heard did come back. The DNR have a balance act at keeping the heard in balance. With a bad winter like we had it really screws things up.
So not only am I going all trad again this year despite last years season of a thousand misses. My selection has been narrowed. Oh well sometimes going in with no expectations is best.
Any others states going through this?
Tim.

They're going to finally quit shooting does in the northern tier of Wisconsin's counties this year. Should have done it several years ago. Hard winters, wolves, bear and particularly overshooting of does has taken it's toll. I'm all for it.

Kudos to the MN DNR for taking appropriate action to an unbalanced herd   :clapper:

There are other spots in our state where the tags stayed the same. lots of public ground here in the SE . you can shoot 2 does and a buck, 4 point apr.

I've been checking the net I'm not finding any info.  It's not that I don't believe you just have to see it with my own eyes.  Don't see anything on the dnr site.

another agree!

Growing up we'd see plenty of deer including some monsters sure wish I was a better deer hunt back than!   Now you're lucky to see in 2 weeks on stand what we'd see in a night or two in the late 80's early 90's.  Nothings change on the farms and for the most part the local area is unchanged though it looks like there may be a development in the making on the adjacent farm.  Gotta love urban sprawl.   The fact is there's one thing that did change and that was the massive amount of doe tags for shotgun and bow.

In MO they are finally restricting hunters to ONE doe tag this year.  It's been UNLIMITED for the last 10 or so.  Our herd is way down because of over-hunting and EHD.

Lots going on in MN not just harsh winters and predators.  How about the managing of deer heard in some areas  below levels set in stake holder meetings??  Rebuild the deer heard yes.  Lots of questions about management however.
