Title: Tips for McAlester?
Post by: kiamichi kid on July 03, 2014, 10:52:00 AM
Three friends and I drew out for Deer Creek the weekend of Oct. 24-26. This will be my first time on the property and while I know many people who have hunted there in the past, no one can seem to give me too much info on this northern part of the property. I'm sure many of you have hunted this ground through the years and I hope you could pass along some wisdom to a first-time hunter of Big Mac.

Leave your grunt tubes and scents at home. Those deer will be able to tell you what brands they are. They tend to look up a lot so make sure you have good cover behind you if in a tree stand.

Never hunted deer creek but I was there in 2012 and most of the bucks on the most wanted list were in deer creek.

Most of the production areas are in Deer Creek. Many deer go in and out of these secured areas though holes in the fences. The deer also use the railroad tracks as travel routes. A stand site around one of the production areas and close to a railroad track has worked for me in the past. All these areas that can be hunted are past the
1st control point. Sit still and be on constant alert. Your shot could come at any time and very quickly. Check Google Maps for a better idea.

I wouldn't leave my grunt tubes at home. Mine grunted in a 140 inch ten point for me when I was there in 2012. He lives on my wall now.

Ha so true. I took a "CAN CALL" last year. I had a 150 plus standing at about 45 yards. I turned my can over in my pocket. He turned look my way and said "Primos Original Can $9.99 at Walmart." Then walked away. I never saw him after that.

As a point of interest our ranch headquarters is only about 2 miles from the entrance. Last year and a couple of months ago had a slight bear problem for a while. This is only about a mile from the northern part of the depot. The creeks running through the depot also run through our ranch. You never know what you will see on the base and off it.

be prepared ! do as much pre scouting as you can using topos, google earth etc.. that 1/2 day of speed scouting they give you is tough. but if ya do pick a area to hunt try to be a "driver" or get with a group hunting that area or your SOL.. they like to use 4 door picks with camper shells as driver rigs.. ive always gone with a group of 3 or 4 folks and we did this.. the next challange is to "pin" the map where you want to park...
i havent been in a couple years and it may have changed some but to me the pre scouting and getting to hunt that area took quite a bit of prep that most folks dont do.

Don't be afraid to hunt close to roads or bunkers.

Since there's so many Tradgangers gonna be there the weekend of the 14-16, we should try to setup a meeting place, so we can all get to know the gang. What do you guys think?

kiamichi kid, some of the persimmons should be ripe by then.  It's odd but you will find most of the persimmons are still green but if you do enough scouting, I think you can find a few stands of persimmons that are ripe and that's where I would spend my time. Best of luck.

I also drew out for Deer Creek Oct 24-26...I hunted Deer Creek last year and seen lots of deer. It was all about the acorns last year but who knows about this year. I am gonna try and make the archery shoot.

How does one draw a tag two years in a row?
Title: Re: Tips for McAlester?

Lots of folks get drawn back to back years. It's not as likely since you have no preference points but I have heard of plenty of folks being drawn multiple years in a row. I have even heard of guys hunting 2 weekends of the fall at McCalester.  One on a quality pass from killing a doe the year before and the other from being redrawn on a different weekend from that current year's application.

As this hunt becomes more popular especially as a traditional hunt it is becoming harder to get drawn even with preference points. I used to get drawn every other year starting in 2000 but haven't been drawn now for 4 years. Last time I was there were quite a few out of state hunters there. More money for the DOW.

I don't know either, it took me 6 years to draw the first time and now I have drawn 5 out of the last 6 years. The only thing I can think of is they figured out the deer are safe with me hunting them.

I just wish there were more military bases that would have draw hunts that have deer management programs like MCAP

In most cases hunting on military posts is reserved for active duty, reserve, national guard, military retires, wounded veteran's with at least 60% disability, and dependents. I believe this is a justified perk for all they sacrifice on our behalf. The prior individuals are more able to hunt in a training environment without shutting a bases down because they can't read a map or know each bases regulations. All hunting on each base is at the discretion of the post or base commander. That is the reason Bill tells everyone during the pre-hunt briefing that if any rules are broken the hunt can be shut down. He means it. I have seen it happen on other posts because people refuse to follow the regulations.
