Title: MacAlester bound.....
Post by: 1kwikstik on July 02, 2014, 10:38:00 AM
Well i drew a MacAlester hunt this year. Boggy area Nov.14-16. Ive been in 4-5 times in the last 30 years so I know whats there. I've always at least seen good bucks. So I'll be a happy camper, literally!

I'll be going alone though as my boys and I couldn't together at application time. So if any other tradgangers get drawn that wknd let me know!

Didn't get that weekend but I am more than grateful to get an opportunity to hunt the place. I'll be hunting Deer Creek Oct. 24-26. Good luck to both of you! Sounds like you will both be hunting great weekends for some rut activity...

Didn't draw any tags this year

Didn't draw either.   I haven't drawn a hunt since 2009 but that was a pronghorn tag in Texas Co, and I dew an elk back in 2001 so I can't complain.

Where is a good place to stay close by if you don't have a camper?

Rent one from mcaap, pretty cheap and located on the property.  Use to be...  the earliest day that you could call and reserve one was 45 day before your hunt.  But call ahead of that and get the lowdown on the current rules.  Once you figure that out, DON'T waste any time because most get reserved within the first day (of the 45 day mark).  Hope I didn't confuse anyone.

No luck for my group. Congrats to everyone who did!

I am McAlester bound for the first time as well. Drew Hominy Oct 24-26th. What is the best source for maps? Are climbing stands beneficial or should I plan to hunt from the ground? All advice would be appreciated.
Darren

I would defiantly take my climbing stand with me, better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. I hunted out of mine last year.

Pa Pa D Take your climber. I haven't hunted Hominy but I have hunted Deer Creek and Boggy. You should be able to find a tree to use for your climber. I take a climber, a hang on, and a ground blind. I want to be able to set up where the sign is. Never hurts to have different options.

Sorry it didn't go well for you. I've got a small DIY project going. It's a ghillie shawl type thing. I'm going to take a yard of netting, sew it to a boonie hat, cut arm holes and tie on a bunch of ghillie material. The idea is that it'll break up the head/shoulder lines without having to be completely "ghillied up". If I finish it in time, I'll definitely be taking it with me.

I'm headed to Boggy this week. Hunted it two years ago but had hot temps and high winds. Going to be unseasonably cold this time around. Hope they are moving. If any TradGang guys want to meet up Thursday morning while we are all standing around before the first meeting I'd be up for it.

Here's a pick to get you guys fire up... Or not.  Killed him in Deer Creek on the miserably hot weekend of  Oct. 24-26 so I felt pretty fortunate to get him. Judging by the harvest numbers online, cold weather plus the rut is equalling great harvest opportunities... So some one needs to kill the Pope and Young  that never walked by my stand.

I was thinking Thursday morning for the "Meet & Greet", too. Just wasn't sure when would be a good time or place. I'm actually thinking about wearing a nametag with my screen name on it. Of course, the non-TG members will wonder why the hell I'm wearing a name tag calling myself "Fat Tony". Lol.  Now I may just do it tom ake 'em wonder.  :biglaugh:

Just a heads up for you guys going this week... No post oaks made on the entire place.  Our spot was in the middle of post oak country and for the most part it was a ghost town.

Had 2 guys out of my group of 4 call and cancel today. We are hunting Boggy starting tomorrow. If anyone is looking for a truck to ride in for Boggy we'd be glad to have you. Shoot me a message and we can meet up in the morning before the meeting.
