Title: Dacron...How many strands?
Post by: Timbuck2 on June 25, 2014, 04:21:00 PM
Could you guys tell me the strands needed for a dacron endless loop string.

This is for a 65# recurve.

14 or 16?   :dunno:

16 strands for a bow that heavy.

14 will work, 16 will stretch/creep less.  Mainly personal preference.  Down-side with 16 is some nocks won't fit.

16 strands?...that's what I always thought too.

This bow had a 14 strand string when I received it and I changed it out a few days ago to a 16 strand.

Of course (you know how it goes)the 14 strand string performed better and later I started to search some of the older threads on here and found a number of shooters were shooting 14 strands over 60#.

So..that's why I wanted to ask.

Anyway..rather be safe than sorry.

Thanks guys for the replies.

I use 14 strands for 50# to 60# bows.I use 16 strands for over 60#,but like said that's a big diameter string.I use either Bohning Classic(pretty big throat) for  nocks or a .014 Halo serving.Sometimes I'll do a 3 bundle 15 strand B50.Now B55 would be even a larger diameter,B55 is slighty larger diameter then B50.

Hi Chad,
I didn't see your reply when I made my last post.
Thanks!

Thanks again for all the info guys.

I like 14 if endless, but my strings have extra end loops tied on (tunçs, to be pedantic) so string padding is never a thing and I make my own nocks, by and large.  Not supposed to put a Flemish on my bows so unsure about it.

There was a really thorough test done on how string weight/size and silencers have almost a zero factor in bow performance in terms of speed when all else is equal. It is string material that determines performance. It was in the April/May 2006 issue of TBM by Philip Schaelling.  Thought that might be of interest.

Haven't seen that myself, but experiences vary.

That's interesting Joshua.

I need to read that article. I could be the only one but I can see a difference when changing from cat whiskers to yarn puff silencers.

I appreciate the info and I'll try to find that article.
