I ordered a test kit from Surewood Shafts and I'm already having a blast getting them ready to shoot; however, I do have a quick question for all the wood arrow shooters.
While tuning, if I need to cut some length off to stiffen a little do I need to treat the new taper prior to installing the point? Reason for asking is while browsing the how to's concerning wood arrows it does appear that both the nock and point tapers are sealed when sealing the shaft.
Hope this isn't too ridiculous a question but I just want to try and get this right.

No, you don't need to seal the tapers. Actually the glue will stick better to the fresh wood.

Nothing like a good set of wooden arrows! Surewoods are the best wooden shaft today IMO. Keep us posted on your arrow build and how they turn out.
This may sound wrong, but when I bare shaft my arrows, I don't glue the point or nock on. I have a soft enough target where I won't lose a point and the nock will rarely pop off after hitting the targer.
When I'm ready to glue on nocks and points, I take a razor blade and scrape off the paint or seal at each end. I use hot melt for points and Duco for the nocks.
I do that for better grip and just in case the glue doesn't like the particular paint that I use for my cap.

Unlike most sites of similar intent: Things get discussed here and argued almost everywhere else. Not sure how or why because it is often the same individual(s) but this site somehow has removed as much ego as possible and is just loaded with the good stuff(most of the time)
Even the modern day Fred Bears like the Mittens, Wensels and Ron LaClair frequent this place with years of knowledge and input but truth is there are a lot, lot, lot of lesser known hunters here that have a great wealth of knowledge about hunting, equipment and just plain good banter to learn from.
Soak it all up - it's like sitting around a thousand camp fires with a million experiences all from your couch.
