Well Gang, it's been a long and difficult last 6 months. During the hunting season for 7Th Age Bowhunting my Dad(GK or Pop's) was obviously having some difficulty during meals swallowing. Heck, were tough guys so shrugged it off as some simple aging pain like we all get in time. It seemed to get worse and finally hit the summit around the time of Texas Sweat. Dad said he see the doctor as we traveled home from Texas Sweat. The visit came and went. Test, tests and more tests. Then came the results that rocked the family. Cancer!
I can't begin to tell you how powerful that word is.....
Yea, there comes a long silence after being rocked by the word.
Well, he been through the ringer the last few months. You wouldn't know it by his posts here at the Pow-wow or his phone calls or his emails. He obviously hasn't wanted to make a fuss over it all.
Dad went for pre-op meetings Thursday and Friday. Scary stuff hearing each and every detail about something very invasive. Good news is that they've reduced his surgery time to 6-8 hours. I guess you now know the severity of this procedure.
Scared? You have no idea! I'm sure Dad has some reservations too.(That is a joke BTW)
This has all been kinda under wraps. I figured if he didn't tell everyone then I wasn't either. Now is kinda different though. There are only a couple of days till surgery and I'm sure a little support would sure help to ease the mind and help the nerves.
Hang in there Pop! Your family and friends loves you and were here!!!!! You'll be well by T-Sweat. Guess you'll be the special guest this year instead of hired help. CK
-
Heck as tough as you Texas boys are Curtis your Dad will whip this no problem. Gary Take care Brother and get well soon. I'll be pullin for ya here in Illinois. My Dad beat the big C and so will you!
-
Keep your chin up Gary. You gonna whip this and will be back to your not so old self pretty quick.
Prayers Sent for a Speedy Recovery. See you come Sweat Time :readit: :wavey: We will be having some Rasberry Chipotle Sauce, Cream Cheese, Crackers and a Dressed Tecate before you know it.
-
You are in my thoughts.
My mom died of cancer last year. She was diagnosed a year prior and underwent surgery which nearly killed her. She decided that rather than do that again and knowing the cancer would kill her if she didn't, she elected to live out her remaining months as best as she knew how.
She was great until the last couple months prior to her death. That lady could have given tough lessons to my SWAT Team officers...
-
Gary and Curtis, to me you represent the best of Texas. Fast recovery from surgery Gary.
-
I'll pray for you Gary, you can whip this, Keep your chin up. I work with a guy that is beating it, attitude makes a huge differance.
-
prayers from PA WILL HELP
-
Keep your chin up POP my father law whipped this stuff about 3.5 years ago. Since then he became a Grandpop 2X, retired, started shooting a bow and took a cross country trip (4 months) in his RV. Good things are yet to come. Joe

Whether you come to Trad Gang to share, or escape what life throws at you, Gary, one thing is a constant: we are here to listen and help you in any way we can. Bring us your troubles! We are strong enough to take it and lift you up and through it.
Come here to escape if you want to also, we know that you need some downtime and normal conversation about the little things that make up Life. Thirteen-plus-thousand of us out here, one of us has got to be someone you'd like to talk to, or just make you smile on a gray day.

Curtis,Im 68 and had cancer over two years ago and had Chemo treatment.I had a rare muscle disease which only let me shoot up to a 47# longbow. I could not swallow at meals because of this and after the treatment I am great.I killed two big Texas bucks last year(10 and 8 pointers) and I shoot my bow every day. I was in bed most of the time for three months, but I got to read all the Archery books and Magizines I wanted.Tell your Dad I will see him at the Horne Hunt # 2 in West Texas on Jan 25 or whichever day it is and we will hunt some hogs and jav.'s together. My cancer was rectal lymphoma. Wow!! I’m moved and overwhelmed by the support, prayers and best wishes from all of you in my extended TradGang family. Thank you so much for the consideration and concern expressed in your messages during this extremely trying time. It means so much to know there are so many fine folks out there that can, and will, stand by you when the going gets this tough.
I report for surgery on Tuesday morning (9-25) at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and anticipate coming out of the hospital in 10-15 days considerably lighter than I currently am . . . which ain’t much after the chemo!
Thank you very much for being there for, and with us, and I look forward to seeing you all in the immediate future.

This really strikes close to home for me. In 1982 I was on a hunt outside of Iran,Texas when the rancher came to camp to tell me I needed to call home now. Dad answered and told me he was getting operated on the next day for throat cancer and just wanted to talk a little before he had to go through it. Although I had rode out with a friend I told him I would come home. In typical Dad fashion,he wouldn`t here of it. He said me being there would`nt change a thing. When I told the rancher He immediately offered his truck so my friends could stay. When I told him what my Dad had said He said he would have said the same thing. I guess all dads are like that. He lived through it and bladder cancer a few years latter. He told me you just have to be tough and let the medicine do what it`s supposed to do. Stay tough, get well and if theres anything I can do don`t hesitate to call.

hang in there pop god bless you and yours ya in my thoughts curtis :wavey: may the spirit of the wolf keep him safe.

Don't back down, keep the faith and be a good patient! We'll be praying for you.
I know a gentleman, 83 years old, that had throat cancer last fall. Surgery followed by 5 weeks of daily radiation treatments (chemo was out due to his other health problems) made for a tough schedule. He pulled through fine and learned a bunch about throat cancer. Seems that is one that they can really get a handle on these days.
Best wishes to you and the whole family.
-
Gary you can your family will be in my thoughts all day tomorrow. We are all pulling for you, and there will be a lot of prayers for you.
Besides little hormoan wants to meet you

Dad's in surgery now. I was with him till they rolled him. They have computers here in the surgical waiting area. I thought I'd ease my mind by dropping by.
Kinda ironic that the last thing he was saying was that there are some absolutely incredibly folks in the Trad community. He was talking about you guys, his support group. Some of you don't even know him and are calling and emailing and posting your support. He was quite comforted by your support! Dad named many of you by name as guys who have called and continue to call and lend an ear and give your support. You guys are awesome more than you know.
They say that like minded and like-hearted folks congregate together. I know this now more than ever. It's not hard to see. Look around you here and then go elsewhere to post. It doesn't take long to find the reason it's so comfortable to be here. No-one is alone here. You need help and 12,000 plus people drop what they are doing to give the shirt off their back. I'm not sure it's traditional archery that's created the type of people or instead that the type of people you are are the ones who gravitate to this sport and especially this site. I for one am glad to rub shoulders with such fine, giving, and heartfelt folks. I've started my next columns writing this morning. Those of you who read my column will certainly find some connections in the next article. You created the next one. I'm just putting it all in words. Thanks! CK

Prayers sent for you both.

-
Yall,ve been a great help and it's showing. Just got a halftime update. They think they,ve exercized the demon and are starting the long process of putting him back together, just a little lighter in weight.
It's quite obvious that the power of your thoughts and prayers have worked. It's all been much more positive than we thought. Still not out of the dark. Got a few more hours and then the lengthy recovery.
I've miised numerous calls today. Thanks for all your concerns. I'll return the calls tomorrow as time allows. CK
-
That sounds good!!!!!!!!!! We will keep up the prayers til he is outta the woods
Thanks for the update Curtis

Hope they kept track of where things came from :scared: :scared:

good news bro
-
My dad was trained in surgery and always said, "We cut and God heals." Time for the big fellow to take over and mend up the wounds. Glad to hear they are positive about the clean out.
I believe your dad is tough as a south Texas cotontail, don't think a flesh wound to the neck is gonna phase him.
-
FINAL UPDATE: Dad made it through surgery in about 5 1/2 hours. I got to see him and he was awake but not really coherent. The prognosis is good so far. Had to send some biopsies(sp) off to check a few nodes. The grueling details are that he will no longer be eating chipotle sauce, Tecate beer or any of that stuff he used to deem necessary for survival. This Archer will be living without a stomach. They did save the entire esaphagus and attached straight to the intestine. They say he'll live a mostly normal life like this but will need to eat often and the meals will be soft. Not a bad trade off for a few more years around camp with us.
Thanks again for all your continued support. You guys sure have helped to get us through all this. Good night! CK
-
Curtis, we sure are praying on this end for him and the whole family as well. Take care Gary and God Bless
-
Curtis, Thanks for the good news; been thinking about your dad all day. Not a bad trade off indeed, looking forward to sharing many more camps with him. Take care and God Bless!
-
Don't get on the computer as much as I used to and just came on this thread.
Good Lord Gary! I'm glad things have turned out well for you. Hoping you have swift and thorough recovery.
I'm looking forward to trailing more stuck hogs with you and hope to see you at the next Sweat.
-
Praise God for bringing him through, and allowing his family and us to enjoy him a bit longer. I know I treasure every year I still have my dad here with me.
I don't suppose he'd appreciate my offering to trade him a box of cream o'wheat for a six-pack, eh? :saywhat:
Didn't think so. I will go flog myself now. :knothead:

Been a while Curtis. Please tell Mr. Gary he is in my thoughts and prayers. Looking forward to hunting with ya'll again.

Well, Curtis, I thank God that your father pulled through he surgery. Prayers will continue. George
-
Thats good news. I glad he made it through without any problems. Now I'll pray for a speed recovery.

Good news, all things considering. Here's to a quick and full recovery!
-
That's great news my friend!
God is good indeed!!!! What a blessing !
I went thru the same (almost) with my Dad a few years ago, he's gone now but at least the cancer didnt get him. Sounds like "Pop's" is a fighter also.
God Bless!!!!
Tim
-
Curtis, That is great news.
-
Thats great news CK, we are truly blessed.
-
Hallelujah! Good thing to read this morning bro. Very sorry they had to go so drastic, but thrilled with the bright outlook.
Alright Gary, when we sit on the porch, I'll drink the dressed tecate and tell you how good it is...you can have milk ;) I love you, miss you, and may God continue to bless and heal you.
-
Very Good news CK, so glad to hear it.
-
Glad to hear. Now the difficult part: getting him to take it easy while he recovers. If he's anything like my Dad he'll wear everyone out trying to get him to do what the doctor orders.
-
I pray that God will hold you close and pull you through this.
Of course, another thing you've got going for you is that us Texans come out of the womb ready to tackle a bear with a BB gun, and it gets worse from there.
-
Good morning Gang. You are a welcome bunch to wake up to this morning.
I'll be with Dad shortly. He's still in recovery but is stable, coherent, and is remembering who he sees and when they were there. The Doctors are amazed that he is in his condition(great condition). The Dr. says that he has reacted to surgery better than ever expected. They intended to have him in ICU for several days but this morning have decided that he may be ready for his own room. They'll watch him for a few more hours and then make the decision. I'll certainly pass along all your best wishes. He obviously has many friends here and you've all been an awsome help. I really wish there was something more to say than just a simple "Thank You".
-
Now that brings a BIG smile to my face! Can't tell you how happy I am to hear that he is doing even better than expected. Not at all surprised though - I've always known he is a tough old bird!
-
That is great news!!!!! Thanks for keeping us updated Curtis. I know its trying on you and the family, going through this. Keep up the good spirits we all care
Brent
We are ready to share a :campfire: when possiable!
-
Great news to see on TradGang this AM. I guess just maybe there might be something to that old saying of how tuff Texans are. :)
Can be a big job trying to force some folks to slow down and take it easy while recuperating, and it sounds like Gary may be one of those. Gary has done his job, Curtis it’s your turn to do yours. I suspect you’ll be getting a package from Terry soon which may help you keep your Dad occupied during the healing process.
-
Yea Tom, Terry called while Dad was in surgery. He told of the package and I'm quite sure he'll be in healing just seeing it. He's had good words to say about your tallents. Thanks for your well wishes. I'll pass them along in a few minutes. CK
-
Outstanding! WooHoo! :clapper: :clapper: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Hears where I insert the "Dancing Around the Office" Icon!

Good news so far! Hey maybe you can go shoot a goat and they'll install that stomach in there!
Seriously, I've seen amazing gastric stuff done by surgeons. He'll adapt and will be fine.

Glad to hear the good news. Hope to share a camp with both of you one day. :campfire:
-
Man, that's the best news I've heard all week! Pops has been in my thoughts while I've been away. I'm so glad he's gonna be all OK. Curtis, you're a great Son with a wonderful Father. I know it's been a stressful time for the whole family but it's truly great to hear that everything's fine.
Give the ol' fella a big hug from me, next time you see him!
-
sounds like he might be shooting a bow before you know it. Great news Curtis!
-
All right ! Great news.
ChuckC
-
Thanks again Gang! Yes, Dad seems to be improving daily. It did take a day for the soreness to set in but he's back to being honery as ever. The Doc's and nurses don't let him rest but about a half hour at a time so he seems to stay tired. He said he really didn't want calls for now due to his being so tired. He has expressed his deep gratitude for all his extended family's well wishes and prayers. It's kinda overwhelming to have such support! Thanks again! CK
-
That is great news Curtis, our prayers the news continues so
Brent
-
CK,
Sky and I were very concerned when we heard but glad to hear things are working out. We had a long talk last night while shooting and I thought he said a funny thing I'll pass on.
As we were talking about your dad and you as well as dads and sons in general, he said he thought yours would be ok. We talked about sickness and cancer but he kept insisting that he thought yours would be fine. I finally stopped and asked why he was so sure.
He said he was sure with the way you were God would need someone down here to keep you in line.
Quite an impression you've made!
Prayes sent.
-
Oh man, tell him the devil made me do it. :bigsmyl:
He must thinks me a rough hombre. Glad you two are sharing! CK
-
Hang in there.
We cant shoot without him bringing up bunnies or our trip. Being there and a part of his first kill will insure a valued place in our family history.
I cant tell him the devil made you do it because he thinks the devil is his younger sister.
-
I hear that he's just about ready to go on a waterskiing trip...if it wasn't for those danged doctors! Up and walking around, his usual razor sharp wit and most everything else intact ;) He says, "Keep the prayers flowing boys, they are making a difference."
-
Glad you got through to him. Thanks! CK
-
Good to hear of his steady progress. Y'all keep each other in line, now! Thanks for the email, CK.
The air here feels like fall, now. The woods are rustling with flustered squirrels as they hustle up their stocks of the bumper acorn crop. I have the weekend off, cool and dry, yet still warm with sushine. I am fixing stone heads to the shafts that I stained and sealed long ago enough to forget that I had done so. As I go about these preparations, I think about all manner of things, hunts and critters and the way the world turns and people in my life. I know another who is battling cancer, and I can't help but think of those whom I have lost to the damn disease. I have never met your dad, but know him a little through this site and the way you live your life, Curtis.
As all of life is connected, and as all of it comes from the Creator, I know that these thoughts that run through my feeble mind as I seek out the best sinew, or sight down the length of an ash shaft are picked up by the One Above, and so I try to keep them worthy. These are prayers, and though informal, I consider them to be as frank and honest as a prayer can get. And so, I hope that it can be made so, that the path for your father is straightened before him, that the sinews of his body are made clean and fine, and give him good strength. Let him be released into your home environs complete with a fine, sharp head and just enough fletch to keep him flying down the good red road. These are just little thoughts, the prayers of a fletcher, and I thought it might cheer you to know that they go out in your father's name, in an everyday manner.

Curtis, you already know that I've been praying for you and your family since you confided in me over the summer. I'm so glad to hear there is positive news coming out of the major surgery. If you need anythng at all...you know that...
Mr. Kellar, hang in there. We're all pulling for you. The power of prayer is an amazing thing. Hope to see you back on your feet next time I come to Texas. Take care and don't hesitate to holler if you need anything.

Ohhhhh no he didn't! Did he just call him "Mr. Kellar"? Dang....it's on now!
I called him that twice....he let me get away with it once....but the second time? Well, let's just say there won't be a third.
-
I called him that, too. I think it's good to rile up the old forts now and then.

Fast healing Gary but enjoy the TLC as much as you can. Sure did enjoy our time together at Carta Valley last winter. The greatest treasures are memories and you star in some of my real good ones. See you again in a few months.

Hope all continues to go well.

I drove up to Houston yesterday to see Dad. His spirits are great and he's doing better than anyone expected. He does like to talk about Boluses(inside joke). You'll have to ask about them at the next campfire. Dad was already talking about being back in our camps by the new year. Well, that may be a big push but I'm certainly welcoming the possibility of at least having him back in camp by Texas Sweat.
If any of you guys buy the Tradgang DVD you'll find that much of the vidoe was shot by my Pop. You'll certainly hear his witty remarks at each and every one of my "bearly missed" shots. Nothing like your own chearing squad to always be there to ribb you for the bad shots. LOL! :D
Dad should be around a computer by Tuesday or Wednesday. He is walking more and more each day and will reach the public computers in the surgical waiting area very soon. :campfire: Thanks again for everything! CK

To all those many of you who have offered your prayers and best wishes over this past ten days, I can't tell you how much it's meant to me and my family to know that we had the faith and support of the TradGang brotherhood behind us.
Our doctors and caretakers were absolutely amazed and astounded that we were able to pull through all this in such a complete and rapid fashion, but when I told them of all you, many of whom I didn’t even personally know, out there pulling for us I think they better understood.
We still have a long uphill battle to follow, but I know now that if I can pull through that, like I’ve pulled through this, there’s just nothing out there we can’t overcome.
I wish I could thank each of you while shaking your hand, but for now this is the best I can offer. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EVERYTHING!!
Also - I don't care what you call me, just keep on calling.

I's so glad to see you here, and please check with us often to keep us up to date!

AAHHHHAA just knowing you are home, and I'm absolutely positive even better for you! Your own bed and pillow, things we take for granted. But miss so very much, when taken away unwillingly.
