Title: St. Jude Quiver Build- #1 complete - #2 will begin soon
Post by: Bud B. on June 16, 2014, 08:54:00 AM
Tim Roberts, Azwatasha, asked for some pics as his quiver is built. Since most hunting seasons are over for most of us, here's something to help pass the time.

Measured and cut.
    (http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Equismith/P1010164.jpg) (http://s45.photobucket.com/user/Equismith/media/P1010164.jpg.html)

Marking the holes for punching.
    (http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Equismith/P1010165.jpg) (http://s45.photobucket.com/user/Equismith/media/P1010165.jpg.html)

Bottom and sides cut. Top left long on purpose to double check for the 23" depth desired by the winner Azwatasha. Now ready for punching.      (http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Equismith/P1010162.jpg) (http://s45.photobucket.com/user/Equismith/media/P1010162.jpg.html)

The leather used is a "light" vegetable tanned 6/7oz bull shoulder. The "light" designation is due to the leather being exposed to sunlight to give it a more golden look. Lightly oiled or treated it should be a beautifully colored golden tone. I use Aussie Conditioner from Fiebings. Mink oil paste is also good to use. Montana Pitch Blend is popular and also very good.

Hermon's build will follow after completing Azwatasha's.

Stay tuned. I'll post more as I am able with all of life's other demands     ;)

The fold on top. I like the fold better than the separate piece laced on, like my quiver on the right.

Gotta let it dry, punch the strap holes, and then lace on the bottom.

More tomorrow...

On mine on the left the leather I bought was too small (short), but the laced on piece made it work. I'd love to find some more leather like that but the shop guy couldn't remember what it was. It was tucked away on a pile he'd set aside quite a while ago.

Got some chores to do then I'll do some more quiver work. It's supposed to be in the mid 90s here today. Good 'ol southern muggy summer. I love winter.

The bottom line is Bud's quivers work and look good while doing it.

I still love mine Bud.

Well, it's muggy here. I went to a local flea market this AM and worked on my truck's brakes. RF caliper is sticking. That was enough time in the heat.

So I go to work on the quiver. My wife was also busy doing her horse painting thing so I didn't get many "in-progress" pics.

Here ya go Tim...

 (http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Equismith/101_7671.jpg) (http://s45.photobucket.com/user/Equismith/media/101_7671.jpg.html)

 (http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Equismith/101_7672.jpg) (http://s45.photobucket.com/user/Equismith/media/101_7672.jpg.html)

 (http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Equismith/101_7673.jpg) (http://s45.photobucket.com/user/Equismith/media/101_7673.jpg.html)

 (http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Equismith/101_7675.jpg) (http://s45.photobucket.com/user/Equismith/media/101_7675.jpg.html)

Nearly the entire project was supervised by Oscar, the large, nausiatingly affectionate orange lap-cat. I think I got his nod of approval.

Shoot me your address Tim. I'll try to get it shipped in the morning if my wife cooperates  :)  I start my work week tomorrow so a trip to the PO will be difficult for me. I cooked my wife shrimp and scallops last night. She owes me.  ;)  Any questions about the treatment or break-in please post up or PM/email. There is a unique way to form fit it to your back. That trick requires wearing wet leather      No pics necessary of how you wet it but I've used the shower spray to wet'em down.

Hermon, as soon as I can get to the leather shop, yours is next. Give me about a week to get there and pick out a good piece of leather.

I was asked about strap attachment.

Here's how I do it.

 (http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Equismith/101_7679.jpg) (http://s45.photobucket.com/user/Equismith/media/101_7679.jpg.html)

 (http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Equismith/101_7680.jpg) (http://s45.photobucket.com/user/Equismith/media/101_7680.jpg.html)

 (http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Equismith/101_7681.jpg) (http://s45.photobucket.com/user/Equismith/media/101_7681.jpg.html)

 (http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Equismith/101_7683.jpg) (http://s45.photobucket.com/user/Equismith/media/101_7683.jpg.html)

If you notice on the inside, I laced the inner part with vertical lines, so as not to give a sharp broadhead anything much to catch on. The lace at the bottom of the strap allows for shortening/lengthening of the strap adjustment. I also try to do without knots on the top part for smooth fit to the back of the wearer.

Tim,

Here's Lou's quiver. He bought the leather for his build with enough left over and the sister half of the hide made yours. Thanks for your part in this Lou.

And Tim, Lou may have some pointers on the break-in. And I'm here if you have any more questions. I'll include a full lace as extra in the event anything ever breaks/gets cut, so you'll have the same color/width lacing to use as a replacement.

Now to start thinking about #2 for Glenn   :)   It's been fun, but the fun ain't over yet.

I went to the leather shop this morning Glenn...

Bad news. They were sold out of the "light" veg tanned stuff  :( . Even worse news, their stock of veg tan on the shelf looked picked over. Lots of blemishes and stuff in the grain.

Good news...I got you a nice piece of their
Crazy Horse oil tanned in a rich antique brown color     I'm itching again. Gotta get to work soon to scratch it.

Stay tuned for V2...

I received the Quiver that Bud made for Me, it is more beautiful in hand than in pictures! Man what a work of Art! Bud even added a little something extra to the quiver, I took a pic of it and was going to post it as this was the first part of the quiver I saw as I was opening the package but I decided not to so I wouldn't spoil it for Hermon.
I Heard Bud's quivers come with "Mojo" already built in? is this true? cause I need all the help I can get.
Here is what She looks like with a few arrows in it.
Hermon, are You in for a TREAT!!!

Thank You Bud

I started on Hermon's (Glenn's) quiver last night with this new leather. I think it's going to be too thin for my liking and to provide years of service to the gracious bid Glenn put up. Going to wait on a better piece of veg tan leather to show up at the leather shop. I'm going to finish this quiver out and do some field testing on it. I think it'll be good for 3D and light hunting/bh use, but I want him to have a quiver that his grandkids can pass down after they've used it.

On a hold right now. Glenn is aware and is willing to wait a bit more. Thanks Glenn.

I found Glenn a nice piece of leather. I have had a few PMs from different folks asking about building their own and advice on their build. I have talked it over with Glenn and I'm going to do a detailed build along on his to include the break-in/treatment of the green vegetable tanned leather, which is what I prefer to use in my builds.

I'd like to also add, I build quivers for fun. Some folks just don't want to tackle it on their own. Hopefully the coming build along might help someone take the plunge and build their own. All you really need is a cutting surface, a sharp razor knife, a leather hole punch, and a pinch of creative imagination. There are other tools that make it easier, but those are the basics.

I'll start a new thread in a few days after I have worked on Glenn's and gotten along in the process so it's not dragged out.
