Title: Elk Hunting Eastern KY
Post by: Goat44 on June 13, 2014, 09:15:00 PM
I was fortunate enough to get drawn for a Ky cow tag this year. This will be my first time hunting the area and elk in general. So I must ask, is there any nuggets of wisdom on this matter anyone might could give to a young gun (or bow rather)?

Best advice - use the search feature here !
Just type in Kentucky elk, and you will get many to choose from, like  http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=127929

Welcome, and Good Luck !   :D

My daughter got drawn last year for a cow rifle tag. We tried hunting public land and did not see any. Ended up hiring a guide and he had private land leased. We seen several and it was no problem for her to get her elk. The thing is it was the late rifle season. I would expect them to be easier to find during the early bow season.

Give me a shout or stop by sometime, I'm outside of Georgetown, and I can tell you everything that I know.  I got drawn last year and spent a lot of time in the eastern part of the state.  Saw elk almost every day but never could get a good shot into one.  I'd be happy to help anyway that I can.

Thanks for the info. I'll let ya know if I'm drawn for Hazard, then I may have a few more questions about the area.

I was drawn for zone 2 a couple of years ago,on the north side of 80. I saw a lot of elk and had several close encounters but that's another story. I was on public land and had a lot of non-hunting company, atv's,horseback riders, small gamers and sight seers in general. I would recommend finding some private land if possible just to cut down on the crowd.my best opportunities  were in the mornings, after that they went down into the hollers and didn't come back out until almost dark, so you'll have to go after them. Good luck, it's a lot of fun!
