I'm making a Dacron string for an older 62 inch bear recurve. I know they stretch a lot so I'll need to make it a bit shorter than a fast flite string. Can anyone tell me how much shorter.
String will be a 15 strand Flemish twist.
Wish I could help but there is a variable you may not have thought of. Say you start out with 20 twist in your string, the 20 twist in a thicker Dacron string will shorten it more than it will on a thinner fast flite string. Your Dacron string may not need to be shorter at all before it is twisted.
It does need to be shorter. I learned this the hard way a few years ago but can't remember how much shorter
58" and twist it up from there as it breaks in .
There are variables here, but as a rule of thumb, I would make the string 57" long with no more than one twist in 1-1/2". This will give you 1 inch of stretch, plus some 'twist room for adjustment'.
Sorry, but there is no standard--how much shorter is going to vary depending on your technique and the draw weight. At least 1/2", maybe more.

What I generally do is measure the old string and add 16" to that measurement to get the bundles the right length. Usually works out about right
Thanks folks. I made it about 1 inch shorter and it seems to have done the trick

you just have to play around with your jig and see what works for that bow and then write it down.
I'd go about 58 and then twist up if necessary. It will stretch a good bit but 58 will be in the ballpark for most 62" bows
