Just found out I got drawn for a coveted Idaho Mountain Goat tag.
Unit 27-5 in the Frank Church-River of No return Wilderness Area.
Rumor has it that Blake of Eclipse Broadhead fame was also drawn for a mountain goat tag, so there will be two trad guys chasing white goats this fall in Idaho!

Tag in hand. Its for real and no longer surreal! Finished my first 70.3 ironman last Saturday, with two more triathlons, a half and a full marathon to go, I should be in decent shape... at least half as good as the goats!

Awesome!! Best of luck
-
Bring back a goat and a storie for us old fat farts ! So we can dream. Good luck
-
This is a serious question and I don't want you to think I am being a smart alek,...
In that training regiment, after you have already done a number of triathalons and full marathons, what good does a HALF marathon do you?
-
What a dream hunt! Hope to read some great stories this fall from every one of you Trad goat hunters. Mountain goats are one of those animals that have been a dream of mine but as I age the chances of it ever happening are slipping away. I'll follow yours as if I am in your boots!
-
please take pictures !!!!
Enjoy the beautiful country...
Congrats and good luck.
-
WOW! Go for it!
-
Here in BC we can buy those over the counter and go hunting.......tag cost $40......just had to rub that in a bit :p
Congrats on the tag......I hope you arrow a big, shaggy, off-white monster with a single, perfectly placed arrow, on the last day of the hunt, after numerous stalking opportunities. In other words, I hope you make the most of it
Nothing at all quite like hunting the high country. :campfire:

So now you need to be the Goat Ninja ... best of luck on your hunt and be safe. Look forward to a great adventure, take lots of pics for us and share the adventure ... shoot straight :campfire:

Good question. Training is training. At my current speed and weight I burn about 1000 calories per 6 miles of running, and the lighter I am the easier it will be to climb those peaks. Its really all in good fun for me, I have been running and tri'ing for the last year and really have enjoyed pushing and challenging myself.
-
I just got my tag in the mail today!! I'll probbly start a separate thread so I don't step on your toes. Good luck and congratulations. Looks like the marines have their work cut out for them. Mike
-
sounds like fitness won't be a problem. don't neglect mental preparation. determination and perseverence is the key.
good luck.
-
WOW!!! good luck that's my DREAM HUNT OF ALL TIME Someday I will be up there looking for those beautiful white goats.
-
GREEN with envy! You're going to have a blast.

It is nice to know the other hunter for this hunt is also a bowhunter. I just found out I drew this exact goat tag. 27-5 for 2014. There are only two tags so I guess it is you and I. I am very excited. I have been researching like crazy. If you would like to compare notes I would be glad to. I hope you have a great hunt. I am nervous about the size of the unit and being able to locate the goats. Being an out of state hunter makes it tougher. My wife is from Burley so I will be dropping her and the younger kids off in Burley for a scouting trip as soon as possible.

Got up to the mountains for a banzai quick scouting trip. Rough country, the pics won't do it justice... but it is amazing up there. Standing on a peak, 360* views of nothing but waves of ridge lines to the horizon, the only other sign of civilization is two fire lookouts and an occasional bush plane or the contrails from a jet. Absolutely refreshing. The goats were right where I thought they'd be, unfortunately I didn't get to poke around as much as I'd like due to time constraints, but there should be a few more bands in the general vicinity. It's going to be a tough hunt with the longbow (and I am going solo...). Water and campsites are also big issues I wanted to figure out on the scouting trip, which I think I did for the most part. You may notice the huge areas of burnout from last year or the year before. Absolutely huge areas of stark barren trees. With the huckleberries in full display, I thought for sure I would see some bears, but no... no deer, elk, or wolves either, but that's not what I was after. Anyway, on to the pics!
The last road I saw for the time. Never saw another vehicle on it.

Saw the first goats right there.... from that far away...

See her? It is hard holding up the camera to the spotting scope for a picture, impossible to get a movie. I am going to have to get one of those phonescope or digicam gizmos.

Camp on a ridgeline. Thats a small, craptastic one man tent wedged up against a couple small trees... only a 1000 foot dropoff to either side.

I always make a point to take time to enjoy the small blessings as well. Idaho mountain wildflowers (and huckleberries).
