Just received my Taipan from JD Berry. 66" 54@29 drawing to 29.5" As I have heard the bows fit and finish are wonderful, just beautiful workmanship. Bocote riser with boo encasement, wenge fades in riser, black glass and JD's nocks. Only had a chance to fling a few arrows so far. The grip, locator, is much different than the medium high recurve I am used to but James asked a lot of questions about hand, shooting style and shoe size to get the grip right. At first it took a while to get acquainted with the new grip but once that was settled we got along real well. First impressions are bow is very smooth to draw without a hint of stack, stable on loose and VERY pointable, more so than previously felt with other bow/grip styles. My only wish is for James to make this in a takedown, hint hint. Thanks again James, I am a happy camper. :goldtooth:
Question for Taipan owners, what brace height are you running?

His work is amazing. Beautiful!
Mighty fine.
Just beautiful.....but we've come to expect nothing less. Good thing James got your shoe size cuz that's real important to him when sizing your grip!
I run 6.5" on my Morningstar and Argos, and when I was helping Moreammo set up his Taipan last week it seemed to like that same setting.
You J D Berry owners are going to force me to do something one of these days I really don't need to do. James has a HUGE, highly motivated sales force :)
Beautiful bow! You have good tastes :)
I like frog too !
Stunning bow, just stunning
The Taipan is my front runner. With the argos a 1/2 step behind it. And you nailed it when you spoke of its pointability. The speed and ease that the taipan gets on target is uncanny. moving and quick shots will draw out Its true potential
That's another Berry beauty !!!
I need to quit looking at these post ir else I'm going to go broke
I don't care for the looks of most reverse handle bows, but that bow looks fantastic and a shooter. Congrats Katman.
Wow, that is a fine looking bow! Not much chance of that one escaping captivity to become a problem.
Why am I all of a sudden thinking about my shoe size with more than passing interest. Hope it gets light enough to shoot a few arrows soon...
Thanks guys,
bladepeak you know you need one
knawbone, I think the encasement and wedges in lams of riser really make it appealing. Of course a good looking piece of bocote does not hurt.
After talking with James last week, looking at posts of his great work ain't helping my patience. Another great looking Berry bow.
:archer:
PS: I'm never surprised any longer by the beauty of the bows that Mr Berry builds and this one is NO exception to this fact.
In the shop I set brace around 6 3/4, But that all depends on spine of arrow. Katman, your a great person to work with. ...James
As always, a beautiful bow from the master craftsman JD Berry. Nice, nice and nice again!!
Congratulations Katman! You and Mr. Berry have created another beautiful bow. I hope you enjoy your Taipan as much as I have enjoyed my Argos.
Katman,
James responded to your brace height question, but I will add that the Taipan seems to like the shorter brace heights. Finding your sweet spot will depend on the arrows you shoot. I'm shooting Beman ICS full length(32")with 75gr brass inserts with a total arrow weight of 565gr.
Sweet spot for speed and acoustics is just over 6.5".
Nice rig!
James, thank you very much, I also appreciate your knowledge and craftsmanship. Great fellow to work with guys. He knows what Q's to ask to make your bow something you will cherish. Anyone on the fence needs to get on the build list. I am already back on it.
Chromebuck, got a chance to do some tuning this weekend after twisting up a 8190 string and 6.75-7 seems good right now. I get a little buzz at 6.5.
Yeah, I believe that as my Taipan is 62" and yours is 66".
Sweet longbow.
I would order one in a heartbeat if they came in a 2pc
James said a 64" would work with my 29.5" draw but I opted for the 66" for a little more smoothness and stability. The extra 1" on each end is minor.
Thanks Joe, credit to James for design and build. Yes a 2 piece would be real nice.
There is a company here in Alaska that does two piece locket socket conversions to one piece bows using the graphite woven material. I believe he worked for Jack Harrison or possibly Fisk longbows. He explained to me that a reverse handle bow by design isn't conducive to becoming a two piece and he won't convert them.
Don't know much about that myself, but I once entertained having mine converted, but have since just accepted the lethality of my one piece and moved on...There are probably few places in North America where a two piece would be more handy than here, but you can get by with a one piece.
BigJim also does a conversion on bows that has had pretty good reviews for being tight and solid as well. He has a few videos showing the process....in case you would like to do it yourself rather than pay him to do it.
OK......really like that...!
OK......really like that...!
That bow could have easily been done in a two piece design when built, but if you don't want to ruin a great bow, don't try converting it in to a two piece now. No riser reinforcement that is necessary for a two piece.
BigJim
Good call on that Big Jim.
Good call on that Big Jim.
What a great, classic looking bow. I love it.
Thanks Roger and everyone else, James did good.
Big Jim, thanks for the sage advice, I watched the build along video on the take-down and enjoyed it very much. Those were some stout bows.
NICE!!!
