How many of you guys are looking for your first kill(big game) with trad gear? I just switched from wheels to sticks in February and with 3 weeks until opening day here in Alabama, I'm as giddy as a schoolgirl. Just wondered how many others are doing the same.
Mark
I done killed a lotta nocks and arrows,,, now it's time to move on the REAL game for me too.
I got two rabbits last year...cant wait for a chance at deer.
Looking for my first here.
That would be me. Passed on some yearling bucks last year and one shooter out of range.
I'm like you. I got rid of the bow with "training wheels" back in the winter and now I'm anxious for Oct.6 here in VA. It's gonna be fun again!
Looking for my first big game trad kill this season also. I've been at it for a long time. Don't do the tree stand thing. It's stalking and still hunting for me. Had alot of "close ones". Guess that keeps me at it!
... mike ... :)
still waiting for my first trad big game kill, been trying for five years now.
Tracy
That would include me as well. I have been trying for about 5 years now as well and the last couple years I have had a few misses, so hopefully this year I can connect.
Me too.
Yep that be me also! Joe
Count me in
I've killed almost every groundhog in the neighborhood, I can't wait!!! I just started this spring.
Hopefuly in Oct with my Either sex tag I will get my first Deer....
I have connected with Beaver, Rabbit, Racoon Muskrat....
This will be my second year huntin' with recurve. Passed on fork horn, spike, and wet doe with 2 fawns last year. I don't think I'll be that picky this year.
archenemy
To me it's like I've started a whole new chapter in my hunting life(not to be too cheesy). I have always loved bowhunting but this season the anticipation is like never before.
Mark
Me too. Gotta be with a selfbow, going on year number three trying! Maybe this will be the year :campfire:
Terry
I will be hoping for my first as well!
Lookin' to get my First Trad. Critter AND my Very First Turkey!
Keep the faith, all. It will happen. I'm lucky to live in a fairly target rich environment here in Georgia...but the deer are pretty small and jumpy, so challenging. It's a great feeling and everything is a trophy. Look forward to hearing (and seeing) great stories from each of you. When you focus on that spot, and almost without thinking the fletch flashes through the ribs - it is almost magical. Good luck all. Got my first 2 years ago with recurve. Going for first with my homemade longbow this year.
I got a longbow and put away the wheels in Jan. i'm 15 and I have killed a couple with the wheel bow and a bunch with the shotgun and muzzleloader. But come October 6th I will be looking for my first trad kill. And I think it will mean more than all my other deer put together, including the 2 I have mounted. Of course I will try and arrow a trukey too, i've never killed one in the fall before.
:wavey: :wavey: :wavey: :wavey:
I'm looking for my first with a trad bow. I had a doe and 2 fawns under my stand yesterday. The doe presented herself more than once but I held off. The fawns were still going to her for milk. It would have been legal but it didn't feel right to me. Plenty of deer here. I'll get my chance. It just felt good to be in the stand after being out of it for some time.
Good luck to everyone.
Hey Kenny I thought you'd be a season veteran at this. I'm looking forward to my first too. :)
I am also looking for a big game kill, all I have until now are skwerls. I believe that this is the year!!!
That'd be me too. I finally got good wind tomorrow and am taking Dad's Ben Pearson up the ladder. Been waiting for this east wind to quit.
Called Dad tonight, and we talked about his bow...trying to remember the day he brought it home back in '74. I remembered.
His Spectre and Me. We're both looking for that first Trad blood.
Now I think I know why I missed that stinkin' groundhog with Miss Hope. My first Trad kill is supposed to be with Dad's bow.
Good safe luck folks. Everyone here deserves it.
I had my first kill (deer) with a longbow in 1975 in Indiana, and then I made a mistake of switching to compound, two years ago I switch back, hunting public land, but I was choosing areas too close to the large cities, now I've moved 20 mi. north, and I hunt 51 mi. north of that. So I think I will have my first kill again over this year. First time out on opening day, I got busted. All I got a chance to see was, a big butt, with that white flag going the other way.
BrokenArrow 1
That would be me
Mike :campfire:
I will be back at it for my 14th year this year still looking to connect with my first traditional deer. I got the first deer of my life last year with my muzzleloader so this year I am hoping will be the year.

I'm with ya...after 22 seasons with a compound this will be my first with traditional gear. I've shot more this year then any in the last ten and have been humbled several times.
I'm taking the 1st of October off and will be in the stand opening night. Can't wait and I'm a nervous wreck.
Josh
I just started shooting trad this summer. I'm having a lot of fun just practicing here in the backyard. I'm not sure if I will try to take a deer this year.
ya ive got some small game under my belt, but nows its time for the deer
1 rabbit, 1 tree rat with my recurve. Totally humiliated by deers so far. :banghead:
Round 2 in the morning.
I'm in the club.
While shaking like a leaf, I shot at a deer two seasons running. First shot was from the ground and I nicked her hoof. Next season I shot at a buck and skinned his back.
Maybe I should pick a spot instead of trying to hit the entire deer. Ya' think?

I am looking forward to my first traditional archery deer hunt! Just getting back into traditional archery. Been away for TOO LONG!!
Tom
This my second year with a bow and hope to take my first deer with the bow.(3rd overall year with a hawken muzzleloader)
I just start shooting earlier this year. I hoping to get couple small game like a rabbit or two this season.
I am. Hope I get lucky. :D
Wish you all the best!! Remember to stay safe-no deer is worth sitting on the sidelines.
Any deer taken with a stick is a trophy in my book-so pick a spot and have at it.
Above all enjoy the time in the woods you are given-if you listen you will learn.
that be me!!! missed one last year, ready for her this year!!! good luck to all.
I'm in....missed the big boy last year at 12 yds and I sure as heck don't want to write the same story again this year.
I'm looking forward to my first bow harvest, period. Missed a couple of blacktails many years ago with a wheelbow, but hope make the connection this fall with my Fred Bear Montana. Also have a couple of judos and blunts that I hope to use on grouse and rabbits.Someday I hope to do it all with primitive tackle, but my knapping and selfbow-making skills are a long way from ready for prime time.
I'm that club. Taken countless small game with a longbow and javalina, we consider those small game. I'm really hoping for a nice hog or fat doe this year. 7 days till the opener, can you guess where I'll be.
Count me in, big change from a Compound to a Recurve. But as theu say "Someone has to do it and I guess I'm elected"
Might as well throw me in the pot...I got rid of the wheels this summer. Figure anything that will come within 40 yards can come within 25.
I've never taken a deer with a bow.
I took a lot of small game with my wheel bow years ago and a few grouse with my trad gear but never anything larger. I see a fair amount of deer, just haven't had the right shot opportunity.

Sorry meant to edit and hit quote by mistake
I've killed alot of rabbits in my dad, but I'm hopeful I get a crack at a deer on October 1st. with my homemade longbow. A first in more ways than one eh?
I'm still trying. Had a Doe at 12 yards at 11:20 this morning. She knew something was wrong just stuck her head from behind the tree and stomped and head bobbed. Please lord give me a stupid spike.
Does are too smart.
45#@28", 45"ntn Horse bow perfect for bush.
I had a chance at a huge 8 pointer last year, but wasn't ready for the shot! Hopefully, it will all come together this year .
-Yaak
Started trad this year after 23 years hunting with wheels, about 38 deer with the compound--I'll be so pumped for one this year with the Widow or Whip.Shot a ton of arrows so far-broadheads flyin good-as long as I pick a spot and add back tension the deer better look out!
I'm part of this crowd....
Man, I thought i was the only one out there. This is my second season trying hard.
This is my second year with the recurve.Last year I didn't even shoot.I plan to put my first one on the ground this year.
I had my first big game kill last year on a big nasty hog, but it was with a gun... This year, I'm only taking the bow, and am hoping for my first deer.
I'm looking for a big game kill also.I've taken small game though now it's time to move up.Sold my compound to a friend.Last year right befor deer season opened I had doubts and picked up the wheels that won't happen again.
Hey guys, thanks for the responses. Kinda nice to know I got some company out there. I say when the first of us connects this year, start a thread for "First Trad Kills" and hopefully we can fill up as many pages as this thread with pics of our first kills.
Good luck to all,
Mark
I have shot some small game, rabbits, squirrels, etc. Oh, and one 12" alligator lizard. I shot an arrow at an 80 yard target on one of our local ranges and shot under the the target stand. When I pulled the arrow out from under the stand the arrow was sticking in the lizard.
I haven't shot any big game yet. Not that I haven't tried. Maybe soon....
Yeah I guess, me too. Elk season ends today. and I can tell you. If I'm at my computer responding to this...The season is over.... that means I'm ...0 for 3.. I', gonna hunt whitetails this year though, So increasing my chances..
Me too!....Looking to connect with a boar and buck this coming Saturday here in Texas.....Killed tons with rifles, pistols, spear, and bowie knife, but I hope to put my first arrow in one this year with my longbow!
I am.
This will be my first even Bow Kill.
I killed my first deer ever at 13 with a fiberglass longbow...then left for many years of wheels. I switched to a longbow this spring, and I am ready for Oct.1st season to start.
Good luck to you guys! I know I'm really excited!
pseman,
A week ago I could have joined this thread. I've been trying for 9 years to take my first 'deer' with my longbow. I'll start that that 'First Trad Kills' thread.
Howard
I'm looking for my first trad kill also. This will be my third year with trad gear. My first year I got bit with that "looking at the whole deer" thing and missed.....twice.....on the same deer. Hopefully this is going to be the year. Pick a spot, pick a spot, pick a spot, pick a spot, pick a spot...
Good luck to everyone out there! And don't forget to pick a spot.....LOL!
Awesome Howard, can't wait to see the pics and hear the story!
Mark
This will be my third serious season with the recurve. I don't count the first couple seasons as looking back I was way out in left field as far as hunting tactics to get stick and string close.
This year I'm not looking for my first kill...I'm doing it!! In a couple weeks I'll be right behind Howard on that 1st kill thread.
You can count me in IF- you change the title to- the male species of whitetails. Shot a few does, no bucks yet.
took off the training wheels last december. had a dozen, or so, w/ the wheeley bow... but i'll be looking for the first with trad gear.
I've been trying to kill sumtin for 37 years...maybe tomorrow will be my day.
The last 2 times I hit the woods with my selfbow, I was not prepared. I had been overseas for 8 weeks prior to my hunting trips to Nebraska. My first trip, I missed a bruiser at 17 paces. My bowstring got caught on my armguard and the arrow landed at his hooves. The second trip, I missed 3 different does at less than 10 paces from a tree stand. Someone needs to remember to bend at the waist. There will be no excuses this year. I shoot about 50 arrows a day. I have a full month more of practice before I go back to Nebraska. If I do not connect, it will not be because of a lack of practice. Either way, a day hunting is always better than a day of work. Good luck to all. I hope to see your stories on the first trad kills post.
Shawn
This will be my first time bowhunting at all tomorrow. I'm so stoked. Scouted the place 3 times this week, went early this morning to watch the place come alive, really cool. I'm going in tomorrow a little earlier, good thing for a bright moon.
