Title: 64" Recurves for Bowfishing?
Post by: Tall Paul on May 15, 2014, 01:01:00 PM
Hello all,

I have a 31.5" draw, so I need a 64" recurve for bowfishing. I have a 64" Schafer, but I need something I can get fish slime on, and drop in the boat.

I'm looking at buying a new Samick Journey, which identical to the Samick Sage, just two inches longer (64).

I don't expect it to be as smooth as a Silvertip, and I know its going to stack some at my draw length, but I'd rather pay a little more for something that will last.  I don't like to replace things due to being cheap.

Anyway, I'm looking at the 40# @ 28".  I figure that would be around 51-53 pounds at 31.5".

Any other recommendations are much appreciated!

Paul

Ragim, Sammick, PSE any of those bows work fine for bowfishing. PSE has a bowfishing package called the Kingfisher you get a 40# bow, reel and arrow for $139. I prefer yard sales or flea markets as you can pick up goos bows for under $75 dollars.

The PSE would be great, but 60" is the longest bow they offer....

Not real sure of PSE choices. The Samnic Sage is a 62 inch and about the same price.

You can also buy a 64" Samick Journey too.

I bought the Samick Journey, 64" for bow fishing thanks to a tip from a fellow trad shooter.  It ain't my Black Widows, but does draw smoothly to my 32.5" draw and will make a fine bow for bow fishing.

Thanks manitou.  If you can draw it to 32.5" without it blowing up, I should be fine at 31.5"!

What weight did you get?

I'm really liking the Journey.  Haven't measured my draw on it, should be around 31".  I don't notice any stack--I got the 45@28.

I should note, the string that comes with the Sage or Journey isn't too great.  The right string really wakes this bow up.  I like 20 strands of BCY-X.

I run a ******** 17"metal riser [classifieds] with the cheap $100 SF fiberglass/wood limbs from Alt services- its 62" and fine for my 30" draw and probably ok to 31".

If you can find the 19" TT riser, that makes a 64" bow with the long ILF limbs. if you really want a nice setup, put the SF Elite+ limbs on there [about $300]smoothest limb I've ever shot

If you go low enough on the draw weight and use a thick slick tab you can get away with a short length bow sometimes. I have same draw length as you and for regular hunting I go with the same minimum length bow. But for bow fishing I used my old 58" Bear 76'er which is low 40's @28" and got away with it. I don't go bow fishing a lot though so I'm no expert by any means!   I also bagged my first turkey with that old bow, worked awesome out of the blind.
