Title: Shoulder stretches
Post by: TexasStick81 on May 15, 2014, 09:17:00 AM
I've seen plenty on strengthening the shoulder but I'm needing good stretches for the shoulder.  My right shoulder clearly has less mobility currently and I'm getting muscle tightness from my shoulder through my neck.  There are no structural issues, just tightness.  Thanks in advance.

Google "Shoulder Stretches"  One note.  Most Physical Training strongly recommends not to stretch until you have warmed up your muscles.  Hope this helps.

I hurt mine in the gym a number of years ago. There are some good sites on the internet as far as stretches go. I know you can't do this when you go hunting, but as far as at home goes,I use ben-gay on my shoulder and do as Bobaru says and get the blood flowing before I even start my stretching.

I have been using Icy Hot at night and some anti inflammatories which help.  I guess I was hoping that someone had very specific stretches for the particular should muscles we use in archery.  I have stretches for baseball, for example, that are not necessarily relevant for archery.  I am just trying to save myself the time of watching a whole bunch of YouTube videos trying to find one that is helpful.

All good stuff. Can you add which shoulder (push/pull).  My biggest problem is when the simple answer is rest for a couple weeks if it's a tendinitis issue.  Tom.

Hi Tom,

It's my right shoulder (pull).  It's not tendinitis.  I've even seen a spine specialist last year just to make sure there weren't structural issues.  All is well there.  My muscles get tight and don't loosen up well and then my neck needs to pop.  Massages help typically.  I'd say I'm pretty moderate shooting now.  I'm not shooting every day, maybe every other day or so.  I'm also shooting less arrows.  I probably shoot 15 or so blank bale and then 15-20 at a target.  Really not excessive.  I think it's just a matter of needing to stretch out the muscles afterwards better.
