Title: Wanting to reminisce
Post by: ChuckC on May 09, 2014, 03:25:00 PM
I need some time to just sit back next to a camp fire and think about the days gone by that I spent in the woods and fields, bow in hand.  The good as well as the bad. Thinking of going up to the cabin over Memorial Day weekend and doing just that.

What kind of whisky or bourbon do you recommend I sip while I do this ?

Sounds like a peaceful time.  Enjoy!

Bourbon wise I enjoy Woodford Reserve.  I'm also a fan of Tullamore Dew.

Hey Chuck, good idea.  I like Jameson, George Dickel, Buffalo Trace.  If I have to, I can get along with Maker's Mark or Jack Daniels. Should pair one of these to a good cigar.  Vega Fina is a nice mild cigar.  I also like Hoya de Monterey Excalibers. Have fun. I'm planning the same thing after my turkey hunting is over.

If I'm thirsty, just about any beer will do. If I'm looking to do some sippin', a nice single malt scotch can put a smile on my face and help me fall asleep easier. Goes well with a campfire.

Good for you Chuck.  A campfire and some sip'en Whiskey is good for your soul.  As far as bourbon whiskey, I'm a fan of Makers but just bought a bottle of Buffalo Trace that seems to go down easy.  Bowmore slightly peaty Scotch is very nice.  If you like rum, Ron Zacapa or Flor de Cana, Centenario or One-Barrel - they're all good.

Jealous of your cabin myself.  I'll be your server...  I'm partial to Jack Daniels myself.

The Woodford Reserve would be nice, but I lean more toward the single malt Scotch. In recent times, though rye has tickled my taste buds. Of course, drink whatever you prefer, but as an accomplished drinker once told me, "Life is too short to drink cheap liquor".

On another note, Trumpkin, if you want an interesting taste sensation, put a handful of fresh cracked pecans in your mouth along with a sip of the Laphroaig.

Some Jack Daniel's Single Barrel would do it

Now I do love a nice peaty scotch with a cigar from time to time, but my new favorite sipping whiskey is Seagrams 7 Dark Honey. All the other honey whiskeys out are great and all but the Seagrams one is my personal favorite. Put a few ice cubes in it and let them chill the whiskey and melt a little bit and you'll drink a bottle before you know it. Is a nice easy drink on a warm summer night.

Crown Reserve or Maker's Mark.  Lots of ice no water or soda.  Just let ice melt to just the right feel.

Although I'm not real picky

Ya nineworld9 I got thirsty as well after talking about it. Had to pour myself a glass after typing that.

The champaign of beers and Daniel Day Lewis, I like where your heads at. Classics both of em.

I second this, laphroaig is liquid campfire in the best possible way.

I think the secret with Laphroaig is to keep it warm. I find it tastes best when kept in a flask in jacket pocket where my body heat raises it to 70+ degrees. This seems to release the flavors best.

Brought 2 bottles of Tullamore dew to a party once and all the other whiskey remained untouched till the dew was gone.

Hard to go wrong with Makers, Woodford, Basil Haydens. After trying them all over the last few years. Those are solid store bought brands.
Thinking I was pretty much knowing most of what a casual sipper would need to know about bourbon, I was surprised to have developed a taste for something different. lately I have found that un-barreled corn whiskey, properly done, highly distilled but still maintaining a sipping quality and a wonderful corn smell with a hint of sweetness is far superior to any store bought bourbon.  Just hold a jar up to the sun. It will put a smile on your face. The stuff has many names. And there is a lot of variance in the flavor and style. Find the right stuff and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
I'm starting to think that people started putting whiskey in barrels because it wasn't well made and needed some help. (stuff you think of while sipping clear corn whiskey).
Note - most trendy liquor store moonshines aren't great. A lot of them can't be called corn whiskey by definition of the law. I did discover a corn whiskey that is actually called Shine X or XXX or something like that. From a distiller in Philly. Disguised with that Shine name and in an ugly bottle that cheapens it's appearance, it is actually really good, it's way towards the sweet corn side of the spectrum, even almost smells buttery. Great for sipping. It's pot distilled so it retains a lot of corn flavors.
Nothing like a sip of the clear stuff on the porch of the hunting camp.

wow,  I am thinking this is gonna be an expensive week end !

Jerry, I have been cigar clean for around a year.  My doctor keeps harping on my my former one a week habit and I am trying to be a good boy.  Not certain why.

Of course, I am also of the opinion that I have just so many days left on this earth (too bad we can't cheat and get that answer ahead of time) and  why should I go thru the rest of my life being a good boy !  That's no fun.

A group from the office used to get together for parties and numerous times did blind taste tests.
We all agreed that scotch was a very acquired taste and the taste variations were huge between the various makers.

Regarding whiskeys, believe it or not, the blind taste testing for neat whisky found Canadian Club the winner, over many of the top shelf whiskies named.

That said, I would still like to try the named suggestions that I have not yet tasted.

Thanks for the input !

Can't go wrong with Jimmy Beam Black and Arturo Fuentes.  If you spring for the Basil Haydens Ron Laclair may make the pilgrimage from Shrewhaven, lol!  Chuck, one a week is not a habit, to quote CM Sackett "it's what separates us from the savages". My God man, you need to find another doctor!

Jack and ginger for me.  Remember sitting on my porch of my small cottege in the Adirondacks with an old fishing friend from South Carolina and talking about dogs while we drank Jack Black with gingerale.  Needed a new dog.  He advised getting a dog large enough that you could sit on the porch and not be embarrased.

Though I don't drink much anymore, I always thought this stuff was smooth, and felt like a high roller when I was drinkin' it.

Regular ol' Jack Daniel's reminds me of sippin' around the campfire with my dad....just pass the flask and tell another dirty joke. Lol.

I prefer Midnight Moon Blackberry Moonshine or good home made. It's 100 proof but smooth as branch water. As far as a bourbon Jim Beam Devils Cut is mighty good. Wishing you a good time!

I was recently given a bottle of bourbon called Angels Envy.  Very, very nice.  I just picked up a 100 acre piece of ground in northern Michigan with a 450 square foot cabin.  No electricity except from a 12 volt battery/inverter setup and I have to run a generator for the well, no indoor water though.  I will be spending some time doing just what you are suggesting.  Can't wait.

Just had a birthday and the boys know I'm a bourbon drinker.

Where is this cabin? I'll join ya!

I was a good boy and didn't have anything to drink for over 18 years. A recent diagnosis of prostate cancer caused me to rethink things.

While up in Baltimore visiting Hopkins, I bought a bottle of bourbon. I'm sippin' a bit now in a little glass called a snifter. What a tease.

Since a bottle of Evan Williams last February, I've had Crown Royal, Canadian Mist, another I can't remember, and my favorite of them all, Henry McKenna.

Life can end at anytime. We'll never know. Just enjoy the moments of each day like it was your last. No regrets...just good livin'.
