Thinking about getting a one piece 66" R/D longbow.
Tomahawk SS
Black Widow PL
Etc are in the top of my list.
What are you shooting / loving and why??
-
Big River by John McDonald. I'm ready for another one, my stable of two need a room mate :archer2:
-
I can't speak for longbow, but my 66" Blacktail recurve is phenomenal
-
How about a 66" Toelke Whip? Talk about buttery smooth and super quiet.
-
I retired a Checkmate 53# 64 in. and got a 66 in. 47# Checkmate. Its so sweet I can shoot it all day.A little lighter and a little longer makes a world of difference.
-
In a 66"? Leon Stewart's Slammer or his 'regular' R/D..or a Toelke Whip or also Holm-Made
If all out performance, amazing stability, ease of tuning, awesome quietness and you don't care if it has a little reflex in the limbs strung...the Slammer.
If you want that perfect D shape and slightly less all out speed, and perhaps a slight whisker of bump on the shot for a more 'longbow feel, but still sensational quietness...Leon's R/D longbow.
His wait times seem to be 3-6 months depending on what he's scheduled to build.
As an alternative, with sensational craftsmanship also, and perhaps splitting the middle between the Slammer and R/D from Leon...a Toelke Whip.
And Dan and co.'s wait time is crazy short at 6-8 weeks, sometimes way less.
As a third option, and also outstanding..Holm-Made. Chads bows are just as nicely made as the other two, and his pricing is possibly a bit less overall so very reasonable. I think his wait is also not real long. Actually his Ospreys and such will shoot right up tere with the Slammer.
And the Whip is dang quick too anyway.
All three outstanding bowyers.
You really can't go wrong with any of these three depending on the aesthetics and performance you're looking for.
My first choice would be Leon overall if I HAD to only choose one.
There are so many other choices but those are my top three picks for 66" r/d bows.
-
^^^ x2 on the Holm Made also
Chad makes a nice bow and love the size of the grip with thumb rest
-
Dwyer 66inch original is the sweet one for me! John McDonald does make a nice longbow too...
-
I've got 2 66" LB's.
One is a Howard Hill Big 5. The other is a 2pc Silvertip.
They both are spectacular. That length makes them very stable and smooth.
If I had to pick one of them, it would be the Silvertip though. I've only had it a few weeks, but it is fast becoming one of my favorite bows.

I just got this 66" Century 21 Super Nova from my buddy. Just rolled a fresh Astro Flight 14 strand string for it. Hopefully going to get out with it this Saturday. We have to get acquainted with each other.

My Green Mountain Classic 66",sweet bow and shot some of my best 3D scores with it.

I Love 66" Longbows. I love em'. I had a Stewart, have a Whip,a Widow, and a A&H all in that length. And can tell you from my personal experience that FOR ME the Widow, and the A&H are the only two that matter. If you really want a damn good 1 piece longbow...look at these 2. I've shot, owned a lot of others. The Widow PLX,and the A&H ACS 1-piece are the best out there IMO. The A&H outperforms the Widow a bit,but the Widow just feels so good in hand, the mass is perfect,it is so smooth drawing, good looking, and consistent that it makes it hard to put down. The A&H is fast, flat shooting, zero handshock, smooth drawing, quiet, and such a well mannered bow that I never go into the deer woods without it. I tell you this. These are 2 of the best you'll ever shoot. Try em'. rat'

i like the abbott bows, steves partner chris barck is making them still.great bows.it's a toss up for me between them and a fred anderson,i got rid of most others.
-
I like my 66-inch Robertson mild r/d Primal Styk.
-
I will stick with my Wes Wallace Royal. I have had it for a number of years now. What makes it right for me is the grip.
-
James Berry Morningstar, it shoots the same arrows the same distance with same good flight as my 62" r/d bows. It simply fits me, super forgiving and accurate, and whisper quiet.
-
A Liberty Contender. It is a very well mannered, beautifully made, fun bow to shoot. The strung profile is the nice D shape that many longbow shooters like, yet you have all of the benefits of an r/d bow. I would email SteveL about the 66" Contender he just listed on the Classifieds; [email protected] . It looks like new and it's priced to sell.
Best Regards, Chase
-
Come on now guys....it's the Liberty Edge that you need!
Quality & price.
-
Another vote for Widow PL and A&H ACS.
-
Any bow made by James Berry (JD Berry) - you will not find a better bow or a better price anywhere. They man has been building bows forever, great shooters and the craftsmanship is simply better then most. I could try to sxplain in words but its when you finally wrap your hand around one and shoot it that you truly understand. There is a reaosn why he's still making bows decades later - I am just amazed that he doesn't charge more than he does.
-
I really like Abbott longbows and have been shooting them for many years.
My latest Abbott is 66", 47# @ 27", cocobolo w/yew limbs. It's a good length and weight for me. Besides, it's real purty to look at.
-
Another pop for one of James' Morningstar's....top shelf bow.
-
Another vote for the BW PL.... I simply love mine and have since I got it. Very smooth draw and hard hitting... I still smile every time I shoot it!
-
For a 66" R/D bow, you just can't do any better than a J.D. Berry Taipan. You can pay more for other bows, but you won't get the looks, quality of construction and near 35 years of ability, knowledge and craftsmanship in a Berry bow.

Thanks guys for the reply.
To be honest, this is extremely overwhelming. I am a recurve guy through and through. I've shot them all, and have at one point owned most. But I know NOTHING about longbows!
My experience is limited to two 58" Kanatis and one takedown 58" Bob Lee longbow.
Major form changes and deconstruction of my shot sequence have resulted in a 2 inch increase in draw length. (30.5" now)
Longer bows are the flavor of the week for me right now (playing with Spigarelli BB ILF & Border HEX5 limbs for 68" bow) I've gotta say, these longer bows are sweeeeeet.
Which is why I want to give a longbow another honest try that better matches my shooting form and style now. I think 66" will fit the bill quite nicely.
I've got a lot of bowyer websites to visit!
-
Try them all until you find one you like...PR
-
I don't have a 66" of Big Jim's in a Buffalo bow,but I do have a 64 and it's extremely smooth. I don't think anybody mentioned him yet,but I think he would be worth your consideration.
-
I have 10 longbows that range from 62"-70"...4 of them are 66". My go-to bow is a 66" Hill Big 5
-
Hard to beat a well made Hill bow when it comes to longbows.
Personally the finest longbow I've shot was made by Canopyboy on here. IIRC it was a 66" hill bow with about 1" of string follow ... no tip overlays, cherry lams and black glass? or was it clear ... 44# @ 28 or something along those lines.
It was buttery smooth, ZERO handshock, suprising speed.
What better way to get into longbows than with a classic like that.
-
Whip, Abbott, or Dwyer. The ones I owned were OMG smooth shooters. I just wish I was a better longbow shooter!
-
My Schafer's are my bow of choice. They seem to fit me the best, a pleasure to shoot, and beautiful to look at
-
I just got a 66" Black Widow PLX in trade, I have to admit it is a real nice shooting bow. Very tolerate of different arrow spine and smooth as silk. But there are lots of nice bows out there. You have to try a few and see what works for you!
-
Got rid of all my bows and went with Howard Hill Bamboo longbows in Big 5 and wesley special flavor. also lowered the weight from 70 lbs down to a 38, 42 45, and 48. Depending on your draw length will determine the length bow for efficiency and sweet pull. For my 26-26 1/2" length 66" is the max length to get . I have 4 Hills now and love them dearly .No reflex or deflex-just the way HH stated -straight limbed longbow.
-
I have a 66" Mohawk Sparrowhawk that is a sweet smooth shooting bow. Most of mine are 64" but I shoot this one better
-
Byron Ferguson Safari 66" longbow.
-
X2 for Mohawk Sparrow Hawk. I just picked up a 66", and it will be the bow I hunt with this fall.
-
I have three 66" inch longbows.....John McCullough's TSUNAMI 52#, Two BIG RIVER longbows one is 47# and one is 44#....last but not least is my 68" Fred Anderson SKOOKUM...52#... all are great shooting bows with the Skookum being the prettiest.
-
My Mohawk, as it's the only 66" one-piece longbow I have left :)

Although I prefer my Hill longbows, the best shooting R/D 66" longbow was a Black Widow PL. Very fast, smooth, accurate, and easy to shoot well.
-
My 1pc S-Tip LB is awesome.
-
Sherwood poacher. That skookum is butt ugly I'm surprised you still have it. Lol. See you at Baltimore.? Dan.

This thread will spike a fella's longbow fever!
I've owned several 66" longbows and a couple of 68" Hill and Hill styles.
My favorite is an Abbott we got used last year. It is probably about 46 lbs. at my 30.5 inch draw and it is butter smooth and zips an arrow. It is very nimble and just looks gorgeous too. It is the Lauren Bacall of longbows!
-
Can't post a pic . But my is a jack Harrison American wolf . Coco bola riser. Black glass and carbon belly . Bamboo cores 52@ 28. Sweet.
-
I only own 1 longbow and it is a 66 in New Wood Legacy 50# @28. I just love it!!

I had to google "Lauren Bacall" :)

As stated there are a lot of good longbows to choose from. All I can add is that I have shot longbows from 56"-68" and the 66" longbows are what I shoot the very best out of all of the longbows that I have tried. The only thing that I will do different in the future is, I will spend the $100 extra on the take down system on any new longbow that I get.
Last year I hunted all season with my 66" Black Widow PLX and I can honestly say that I never one time wished that I had a shorter bow while in the stand or still hunting. The PLX is a 2 piece which makes the bow super easy to travel with. I do love all of my longbows but the PLX will likely be my hunting partner again this year.
Good luck with your search!!!
-
Sirius Black, guys our age even remember Humphrey Bogart and he wasn't even good looking :)
-
"To Have And Have Not" is required viewing. Great dialogue and some real killer lines. I never get tired of watching that one. See that one and you'll never forget Bacall.
Only way it could be better is if Harry (Bogey) was a bowhunter instead of a deep-sea fisherman :)
-
Gosh, I've owned a lot of 66" one-piece R/D bows. I'll be honest. I am not impressed with the Black Widow; It is a good bow, not a great bow.
I am very impressed with and still own the following bows that you might consider:
A&H ACS (one-piece)
Leon Stewart Slammer (I prefer this bow to his R/D, and I own both)
Fox Triple Crown
Big River 21st Century (copy)
21st Century Edge (The workmanship on the bow isn't the very best, but they are shooters.)
These are the best out there in my opinion. Good luck!
-
I only have two 66" R&D longbows & both of them are great bows. They are a Fox LB built by Ron Fox before Ron King took over.
The other is a Tim Meigs Duo-Flex this bow is incredibly smooth & forgiving. I'd take either of them into the woods! ;)
-
HHA REDMAN - smooooooth on the draw and shock-free on the release!
Keep the wind in your face!
Shoot straight, Shinken
:archer2:
-
I have the Howard Hill Halfbreed in 66" - very smooth quiet shooter. I also have the Northern Mist Shelton (String Follow) in 66" which I find to be a tad smoother, very quiet, and very forgiving bow.
-
I have one 66" and it is a Heritage Bridger Mountain 61# @ 28" mild R/D with a strip of carbon in it. Very stable, smooth and quick. My preference is for 64" length longbows and my favorites are Harry Elburg's Condor and James Berry's Taipan for the same reasons.
-

What's your draw length?
I know a bit of reflex allows for a shorter overall bow, but does string follow require a longer bow? Just curious.
-
My favorite 66" is an Abbott at 60# @ 28inches yew limbs and cocobolo riser. Dead stable and silent, surprising cast. I also really like my 64" whip, but given the amount of RD I think 66" would be too long for my 28" draw with this bow.
-
I had a 66" toelke super D, one of the easiest bows I ever had to shoot.
-
Osage Royale by Chuck Jones ... String follow, fast, super quiet, shock free, all Osage and beautiful.
Bob
-
I have several 66" (and longer) longbows. My current favorite is my Two Tracks Echo, a Hill Style string follow. Smooth, fast, quiet, no hand shock, excellent workmanship, very reasonable price, and Chuck is great guy to talk to. Should be getting my second one in the near future
-
1st my 66" JD Berry Vixon is perfect! can't describe it but it hits where I want, its quiet, its beautiful, and I just like shooting it.
2nd,,,,, I think I have 5 all about tie at 2nd.
-
Settled on a Fox Triple Crown.
I'm very excited! It will be 66" 45#@30". All micarta riser with bacote veneers.
So pumped. Thanks for the input guys.
-
I think I am on my 6th or 7th longbow but was primarily a recurve guy earlier and still have more curves and longbows actually on my walls.
that being said...I am a fan of the Mohawk Sparrowhawk and the Robertson Primal Styk if interested in RD Longbow...
I think Dick Robertson was one of the first bowyers to come out with an RD longbow....
go to ETAR or another and shoot as many as you can find but any of the reputable bowyers will do fine but as you can see...there is a large number of options...some from guys doing it for 40 years and some from relative new bowyers...all good....it really is PERSONAL PREFERENCE once you select a reputable bowyer with a proven track record.
Good luck and wish you straight shots and short blood trails with the Fox Triple Crown.
