Last year I spent a lot of time in the deer woods and loved every minute of it. I split my time between treestands, brush blinds and a ghillie suit. I saw more deer that any other year.
Many of the deer I saw would have required a shot at a moving target. I shoot a lot and I am normally a pretty fair shot, but I had not practiced moving shots like were presented in the woods.
How do you guys train for moving shots? Any practice ideas would be of help! Thanks!
Bowfish, Squirrel hunt, or have your buddy pull a 3D deer around in a wagon.
I always wanted to build a moving target that just kept cycling around on a pulley system.
My buddy and I do aerial every now and then. We also kick or throw a soccerball and try to hit it as its rolling. You could also set up a target on a zipline, or hang a milk jug off of a clothes line and have someone pull it for you.
Shooting swinging tennis balls and stuff is fun too, but not really the sort of practice your looking for.
Or you could just stop the deer then shoot?
try a garage door opener with modifications so you can get a continuous cycle or one that reverses. Sew in small velcro pads on the chain and put velcro pads on the bottom of small stryofaom discs or squirrels. want to be humbled, huh?
A old car tire with a foam target in the middle works great. Have someone roll it for ya.
Frisbees are good too. Either rolled on the ground, or with a cup taped on and thrown for you.

I like my buddies too much to have them pull a target in a wagon for me. :biglaugh:

Buddies get rope. It's optional for In-laws. :D
Mount your 3d target to a frame with rollers on garage door rails and place one end of the rail higher than the other. Tie a rope to the base of the rail, release, shoot and pull target back into the starting position. I know this is not a rotating non stop target but, this will work until you can figure out how you want your setup!
Like bendotwood stated, a zip line will work but usually works best with two people as does the garage rail system.
I like the rolling tires and balloons inside them. We do this at camp many times during the summer.
Most practice on moving targets do require a helper.
Practice on slow moving targets.
Walking deer, the only ones I'd consider shooting at are really not moving to quickly.
It is easy to try to lead the spot too much.
x2 on Carp
Get a remote controlled car, attach a balloon to it and have at it..
That's a good idea Mike have wanted to try that.
Tennis ball , poke a hole through it and hang it with cord in front of bag target (or bale, etc). Set it to swinging side to side and step back to shoot.
A stick above a large target, high enough to tie about a six foot string with a clip to hold a balloon. If it moves to fast add a sinker of the appropriate weight to slow it down. I practice taking a smooth non holding shot. If you draw and try to follow it back and forth at full draw it will mess you up.
one 3d range I've been to had some 3d targets on the equivalent of a zip line, you pulled a rope and moved the target up hill basically on the cable and when you let go of the rope the target went zipping by. I always hit it in the arse, you have to ambush the target, basically aim at the right spot in space and loose the arrow with the right timing to hit where you want to. If you swing your bow like a shotgun you might get poor arrow flight etc. That bit of advice is coming from somebody that never managed to hit the kill zone so take it with dose of salt, but I will say I only got to try it 3 or 4 times.
Thanks for all the input guys!
