I love the old Howatts.
I picked this one up a little beat, and was going to restore it with high gloss as a collector piece.
The more I looked it over, I figured this little guy has to hunt again. The heck with vintage collecting this time.
So I went at it, leaving the original decals and writing, but gave it a satin finish and slapped on some greenish Mojave rattlesnake skins.
I like the results. Figured I'd share it with those trad brothers and sisters who like the old Howatts, and hunt with them.
Its a High speed, 54", 54#@ 28". HSX1945.
I don't know the year made, if anyone wants to chime in on its age. My guess is late 60's?
Havent seen one with this wood combo, pretty cool. Havent shot it yet......

Nice bow and a great job on those skins
DDave
Flat out nice!
George
Very nice ... great bows
Beautiful bow David. I'd like to see your collection of some of the prettiest bows I have seen. Always great looking skins on your bows.
David,my guess is for a '71. Very nice,I am looking for a lefty similar to yours. I have 6 old DH myself and they are great shooting bows.
The Ne Plus Ultra logo was an early 60s logo. Could be '61.
Cool, thanks Rich!
Love them Howatts. Great job on those skins!
Very nice!! Those skins look amazing.
Very, very, very Nice! Love to see the oldies out hunting!
Love old Howatts ,I have a couple myself. Super nice job on the skins!
I am thinking '61.
Well done, that's a beauty!

Beautiful bow. I have a few Howatts that I still hunt with. I'm guessing early to mid 60s. I have a '65 Howatt with the NE PLUS ULTRA Shield, shoots like a dream.
Beautiful.
very nice, there is nothing like giving an old bow a new life.
Very nice job on the facelift! These Howatts bows are surely one of the nicest bows ever built...
That is a beauty and does deserve another chance to get in the woods. Love the old Howatts - great job!
David, That bow came out incredible.
Hope your wife didn't catch you with the skins in the tub again. :readit: ;)
Great job, awesome skins! What did you use as the finish?
Great job on the refinish and skins. I'm an old Howatt fan myself. Some of the best looking and shooting bows of days gone by. Funny thing is, they also shoot with just about anything out there today.
very nice
Nice job, she came out beautiful!!!
That is one sweet early sixties Hi-Speed! I've been looking for a 54" lefty. Those old Howatts are still my all time favorites.
They are sweet. Too short for me unfortunately.
John, I use varathane on skinned bows, advice given to me from a very well known bowyer to us all for applying over snakeskin.
Charlie, she won't catch me. I will never do that again! :banghead:
That is just a great looking bow.....you did the right thing the way you dressed her up!
I'd love to run into an older High Speed even though I shoot mostlylongbow. Had a Damon Howatt Hunter for years.
Very good job David, Love what you did to the bow, I have now a High Speed and a Hunter. The Hunter needs to be refinished yet. Thankds for the ideas.
Very nice!
