What say you, do ladderstands spook whitetails more than any other treestand? I honestly want your opinion.
Most of the time a hunter using a big, bulky, ladder stand usually sets them up a few days before the hunt.I don't think there are still many folks out there that go in in ther dark and set one up the day of the hunt. Once a ladder stand is in fact set up and left for a few days i have never been in one that spooked deer. They get use to them being here.
I don't think so,we put up one last year and the deer didn't seem to notice.
ya ive used them for the past two years and i set it up a couple days before i hunt out of it and ive never had a problem....curtis
Last year I placed my one person ladder stand out late morning and hunted it that afternoon, I can tell you for sure it didnt spook game since I had 3 bucks within 7 yards of the ladder that day. In fact the one I did take , a nice 8 point, actually rubbed his antlers on the ladder before I shot him at 17 yards.
This year for the youth season, Sept 15th 2007 I did the same thing with the late morning stand setup and afternoon hunt for my son. With in 4 hours of setting the stand up a nice 8 walked up on my son and I in a 2 person stand. I am proud to say he made a fine shot at 40 yards on this deer.
I dont think that ladder stands spook deer, I absolutely know that they dont spook deer.
Not at all
I've been hunting almost strictly out of ladders for the last five years with absolutely no problem at all. My favorite is the Loggy Bayou Bowhunter with the flip-up seat. Just tuck them into forked, double trees or softwoods. If you are still concerned, you can wire or tie-wrap softwood or leafy branches to the uprights. You can also buy those plastic leafy vines in craft stores and wrap them around the uprights and rungs. The leaves never die and fall off. Works great. bw
Not unless you are dancing on them at the time....LOL. Only caution is pay attention to the foot section. I didn't and bought one with a small foot platform and it is tricky turning for an off-side shot.
Barry, does Susan know you've been hanging out with the ladies at the craft store again?? LOL
not at all...ive had one use the ladder as a rubbing post a few years back.
Thank you all for your feedback. I came from the wide open west and am used to spot and stalk. Learning the ambush technique.
I think its interesting that some think they do not spook deer at all. Come hunt public land in Michigan and see if your opinion doesn`t change.
If it is left out long enough to become part of the scenery, it will go home with someone else.
Ask the 4 that I killed out of ladderstands last year....!!!!!
Nope. I am always surprised how much game I see out of my ladder stand. It's only 12' tall, whereas my hangons are usually 18'-20'. Just as much game at close range from the ladder.
I used to hunt an area with old farm equipment and junk cars strewn throughout the place. Didn't bother the game.
Nope...I have shot deer from them...also when bow hunting hogs....I have had 5 to 7 does come under my stand out of season to drive me CRAZY! :banghead:
I have used them for years and killed my biggest buck from one. I have had deer smell and rub on the ladders.
The ladder stand itself does not. The tresspassers who hunt your stand will.
Nope I shot my buck last year at 10 yards from one, they're great!
NO!
The doe I shot was within 3 feet of my ladder stand, turned, walked about 15 yards, turned broadside and waited for me to blow a snuffer through her ribcage. While I was waiting after I shot her, three more came within 15 feet of my ladder. They spooked at the bloody arrow sticking up in the middle of the trail, but didn't pay a bit of attention to the ladder. BTW there were four does standing around my stand when I walked in that morning. I walked right up on them in the half-light before dawn, but didn't get a shot.
I was huntin' w/a buddy that shot a 130's class buck at 5 yards while in a treestand less than 5 feet off the ground. but than again, I shot a 160" deer on the ground under 20 yards, so I would say a person can make any stand work if your placement is right.
good luck!!
Only if I'm sitting in it
Deer will get use to anything as long as it there for a while. Lots of people talk about brushing their tent blinds. Yeah you have to do it if you putting one up and hunting out of itthe next day. If you left that blind there for 2 weeks you wouldn't have to do anything, the deer would have gotten use to it. In fact you could put up just a plain camping tent and hunt out of it as long as it was there for a while.
I just take extra pains to camouflage the ladder portion by tieing brush to it, double/triple trees, etc. Best thing about a ladder stand is the peace of mind/ease in climbing in and out. They're not as mobile, but they are very safe.
Note: You still need to belt yourself in up there even if ladders seem more safe. Buddy of mine pitched out of a short ladder and is mostly paralyzed below the chest because of it.
Oh, I might add, I have a 'Buddy' ladder stand that last Thursday I sat both my daughters (ages 4 and 6) in with me. Because of a weird tree situation, I had to take one section of ladder out so we're only about 8' up. Yet we had two dink bucks and two fawns offer easy 10-yard shots during the hunt. Unfortunately, we were hoping for either a big buck or any adult doe. Next time. This stand was butted up to a big mulberry tree with cedars growing alongside, and we are very well camo'ed in there.
No, it's the big blob of camo'd hunter skylined because the stand is in too small of a tree with no background cover that spooks the deer.... :biglaugh:
I've only known one ladder stand to spook deer. It was a cheap Cabelas model that came painted a light gray. It really stood out and the deer would pick up on it quickly. We painted it with a dull OD and that was the end of the issue.
