Title: Turkey hunts
Post by: Canadian Idle on April 03, 2014, 01:35:00 AM
Just wonderin' how far you guy's go to hunt turkeys. Good turkey hunten' for me is about 400 miles. The wife says it's about 350 miles too far. They are only $.99 a lb on sale ready to cook. I don't think she really understands. LOL

I just booked a Texas gobbler hunt for the first part of May. Gonna be about a couple thousand mile round trip before its over. My wife asked, "you know how many turkey's you can buy for the cost of this hunt?"... I told her, "none because I probably won't get one!".... She still doesn't quite understand and I don't think she ever will but she puts up with it...

I don't think I can buy what it will do for my soul and she does understand that.

As a wise man once told me on my FB wall after a post about how awesome my wife is about always letting me hunt..,.. "there are worse ways a man can spend his time and money,.. I good woman knows that"...

Right there with most other guys.  I can hunt them right out the back door, but that didn't stop me from driving 250 miles this past weekend to hunt jelly heads.  I LOVE turkey hunting.  Didn't get a shot this past weekend, but I sure got to talk to a bunch of them, which is almost a great. I am getting married in June, and my fiance thinks I'm totally crazy, but she is very supportive.

For me I hunt them because they are just outside the door.  I would never spend money to go anywhere to hunt them, or any other bird.  I mean come on guys, it's just a bird.  I've killed a few but I just can't get excited over them.

JUST A BIRD???!!!!  In my neck of the woods a mature tom turkey is an outstanding trophy with any equipment, let alone a traditional bow.  Next to whitetails they are my favorite quarry.  Each man his own, though.

I've killed three rutting, PO'ed, lookin' for a fight moose all under 20yards and I honestly can say I get nearly as excited calling in and killing a big 'ol tom! Only difference is I'm not as concerned about being killed by a turkey  ;)

The wild turkey population was re-introduced in our area and the birds are thriving.  I am lucky to hunt them 15 minutes from home.

Well even in Illinois I have to travel at least 2.5 hours for public land that has hunt-able birds.  On May 1st I'm leaving for my annual 14 hour trip to North Platte to hunt them.  It's not about the meat these days.  It's about  getting outside and stretching your legs.  How far does she go for a new purse or pair of shoes?  Wait, don't use that one.  It didn't go over well with my wife...

So far I've traveled anywhere between 100 yards and 700 miles.  If I ever try Oceola's I'll sure go further.  Hunting turkeys is a blast!
