Title: trad archer artist
Post by: centaur on April 01, 2014, 05:05:00 PM
While perusing the numerous petroglyphs at the 3 Rivers Petroglyph site in New Mexico, this particular one struck a nerve. This is trad archery in its' most basic, and from the picture, it appears that the artist was having trouble with shot placement like many of us do.

Good stuff!

Looks like he was mixing parabolic and shield.

I think the hieroglyphs say: "Is 45# enough for rock sheep?"

Thanks for sharing that Pat.  Only thing funnier than the five legged sheep would be a pile of sheep poo in front of that rock.     :D

3 Rivers is a great place. It is about 30 miles north of Alamogordo, and has over 20000 (yes 20 thousand) petroglyphs on the rocks there. For guys like us, it is a wonderful place to wander around and think of those people who were making their living from archery a long time ago. Watch your step if you go; the wife just about stepped on a diamondback in the trail while she was looking at all the glyphs.
There is a BLM campground there if you are so inclined, but the wind was blowing a steady 40 when we were there this time, so we opted for a motel in Alamogordo. Definitely worth a look if you are in the area.

Pretty cool!  Makes you realize that in the grand scheme of things, it really hasn't changed that much over time.

Real nice. Maybe three fellas shot at a sheep in unison on that particular hunt.   :dunno:

I wonder if this was graffiti of the time put in a location to jibe the poorest shot in the tribe?

That is cool - and there is truth to the "watch out" for rattlers too.  I was watching a show on AP or Discovery or some such thing that theorizes we are creating a bread of rattler out west that does not rattle or give any warning before striking.  With all the round ups and kill offs obviously the ones most likely to survive are those that sit quietly while their rattlin' buddies go in the bag.  These become the breeding stock creating a snake that rattles less before striking.  Ouch!!

That is really cool. I wonder how they marked those rocks to have them last so long
