Title: Most Beautiful wood
Post by: nerksa_nayr52 on September 19, 2007, 04:52:00 PM
Hey,
As usual I'm thinking about what I would put into a custom bow if I were to order one and I wanted to know what do you guys think is the most beautiful wood? I really like black andhite ebony and spalted maple.  What do you guys think is the most figured or beautiful wood out there?

In limbs, Tamo ash or (if you like a darker wood) birds-eye bocote.  In a riser, bocote, bolivian rosewood, chechen, cocobolo--a combo of any two.

I'm partial to some mince dark red with black striped Cocobolo with some Curly Maple thrown in there. Take a look at some Quilted Sapele as well, very expensive and rare as well.
Got a Birdseye Bocote River Edge Arroyo coming in January too, awesome looking wood as well.

Lacewood, bocote, cocobolo, zebrawood, juniper, and the like are all ones that I like, but  My pick for the most most figured and beautiful woods are ziricote and snakewood.

Edit: I forgot Moon Ebony is pretty darn sweet too!

The niced looking bow I've ever seen was a string follow longbow with yew limbs and cocobolo riser, a dark red/black like bucksnort mentioned. Beautiful.

Nerksa, I think you picked two of the prettiest. Never seen black and white ebony until that Centaur pick was posted, probably will be in my next bow! I love spalted maple, most any spalted wood is a looker to me but especially spalted maple. If you like those types of color/figure, you may also like olive wood, I've seen some gorgeous examples of that too.

Before seeing the b&w ebony, my favorites were bocote and macassar ebony in a combo...or zebra wood and gaboon ebony.

Hard to get but in my opinion the prettiest colored wood is ziricote from south america.

That is funny I read the whole threafd and said, Wow no one said Sappelle. It makes the absolute best limb veneers. Natural camo. Now for a riser I like coco and osage! Shawn

For a riser, Bocote with Cocobolo (dark or red), Macassar Ebony or Thai Rosewood.  For limbs, Actionboo cores with Claro Walnut veneers.
