Title: Hello, New Here!!!!
Post by: Twangy on March 30, 2014, 06:45:00 AM
Hello everybody! First post here, and I am planning on lurking for a while so I can soak up some knowledge on bows in general, Bow crafting, bow fishing, and bow hunting. I'm particularly interested in hunting Gator, (I know I 'm a weird one!).

Anyway, a little bit of history on my self; I did a 5 year stint with the Marine Corps, which sparked my interest in firearms, which eventually sparked an interest in hunting, and now I want to get into different aspects of hunting, fishing and outdoorsy-ing and learn to craft new and more useful things. Also, before and during my time in the Marines, I dabbled in Luthery, that is the art of making stinged instruments, so I know my around a modern carpentry shop at least.

After I got out the Marines I bought my first Pistol, a Gen3 Glock 17, and I love it to this day. It turned me into a sort of range junkie, lol. I Just bought my first Rifle, a Yugoslavian SKS, a little bit ago and am enjoying it emmensly. But the wife and I have also been experimenting with knife throwing lately and we're both enjoying that quite a bit to.

She started expressing interests in bows as well, and also talking about her own pistol now. She's come a long way from when I first met her and I could not be more proud.  :)  So, eventually I plan on making us a few starter self bows, and eventually graduating to larger higher poundage bows. Anyway, I'm still new at hunting so I'm hoping to learn some tips and tricks to hunting in general here, as well as gain knowledge on the craftsmanship of bows.

Anywya, thanks to the administrators for having me!

Thank you for your service, and welcome to Tradgang! You have found a great place full of good people that are eager to help people of all experience levels.

Lots of us can also point you in the right direction for other resources on learning to hunt. I'll start that ball rolling by suggesting a book called "Stalking and Still Hunting" by G. Fred Asbell. It's a great book for learning to hunt from the ground.

Lots of others for learning to hunt by other tactics, and I'm sure those in-the-know will chime in with them, soon.

Again, Welcome from Oklahoma!

Welcome to Trad Gang, and thank you for your service. You will be able to find a wealth of information on this site regarding traditional archery with assistance to both you and your wife. You will also come into contact with some very talented knife makers as well.

Can't say much about the firearms fascination as this is an archery site, but I will mention that you will need to carefully check your state hunting regs if you plant to carry your pistol while bowhunting. Good luck on this journey you have begun.

Hoorah Devil Dog.
Im new to this site as well but long in the tooth with archery. I actually remember when there were no wheelbows. I play a 5 string banjo in a working Bluegrass band and have made a 5 stranger myself. It aint as good as my  1926 Gibson though..haha. You will learn plenty here.

Welcome to the forum. Building your own bow is a great undertaking. Not one I do, but there must be great satisfaction in shooting a bow you've made.
 Join right in.
