Title: Green Glass Bows....
Post by: Roger Norris on March 28, 2014, 04:42:00 PM
Here is my first bow, and my current. A York green fiberglass static recurve, and my current Northern Mist Baraga. I am writing a story about why I have always been drawn to green glass bows. This picture tells a lot of the story...

Around 1958 I got a 45# solid green glass bow but it was translucent in color. The prettiest green you could imagine. It would rattle your eye teeth and loosen your fillings when you  shot it though.

My first recurve bow when I first started archery was a green fiberglass bow that had a plastic hand guard and I liked the bow even when I had my first shot at a deer and watched him jump the string. The grren bows sure brought back memories. My bow cost me $5.00 and was 50lbs @28".

I still have a green glass bow from my dad.  The limbs are round and the riser is aluminum.  It was made in Pontiac, Michigan but the manufacturer's name eludes me right now.  It was my first bow when I got back into archery in 1997.  That bow is the reason I ended up going trad only, and it is one of the worst shooting bows I've ever shot.

I learned archery on an Indian green glass bow like the one in the picture. The may not have been the best in the world, but I sure did enjoy them.

Now I have several of the red glass bows that are essentially the same, but somehow the green was special.

My first bow was like the solid glass bow pictured, but was tan or light brown in color if I remember correctly. I was thrilled when my dad bought my brother and I those bows.......1966. I remember some other kids that owned the green colored bows and thought then that they were nicer looking. Id' like to have one of those green jobs now, just for the halibut!

Thanks for sharing that Roger!

My first bow was a solid green glass Shakespeare. I let my little brother use it when he was still home and I saw it in the closet there over the years and often wonder if it is still there. Never remember to get it when I'm there, too busy visiting I guess. But it was a great little bow and I had countless hours of fun shooting it.

My favorite bow - a 1966 Browning Explorer - has green glass on the back abd a brown belly.

One of my prettiest bows - a zebrawood Ben Pearson Hunter - has green glass.

And my Green Futurewood Bear Kodiak Hunter has dark green back & belly.

Mike, I know your a Hill devotee, but in this case, it just means you need to call Steve Turay at Northern Mist and order one of his bows in Green Glass!!!

I should have my Shelton and Huron in a couple weeks if you want to try them out in Roseville!

Green Glass is Pretty Darned Cool!!! Roger, thanks for the pics!!!

I love green glass too. I really like the look of  Great Northern's Super Ghost in their old school green fiberglass. That's one on my short list

I like the green glass, too.
I'm soon going to see if I can find a 56" LH Grizzly in green. I see Great Northern listing them as a limited edition on the back cover of the latest TradBow Hunter Mag.

My brother had a green glass bow like the one in the picture that a neighbor gave him. One day when I was about 5, I snuck it out of the house and took it to the creek to shoot fish. Not knowing how the string went on, I broke it, panicked and threw it in the deepest part.  Good thing my brother was not into archery but I was fascinated by that bow. It was an big upgrade from the bow with suction cups and plastic fletches.

I have always been confused by my lack of interest in beautiful wood. I love looking at others wonderful lamination's, but my bows have always been plain. I truly believe it was because of my first bow. I can honestly say that first green bow, given to me some 45 years ago, shaped what my life would be.

Anyone know why those 52"ers sell so high on the big auction site? I'm talking about a plain solid glass green bow with a black plastic grip. Maybe an Indian, or Pearson, but they seem to bring top dollar for some reason.

I like green glassed bows.  I have two Hills from the 50's with the Kelly green Eicholtz woven back and green linear belly.  This color seemed very popular back hen. Also have a 1965 Kodiak with a more subdued,  forest green colored  glass.  Given Bear Archerys offerin of the Super Kodiak with the Kelly green glass, perhaps the availability from the glass suppliers will improve,  I have heard from a few bowyers  that green glass was not readily available. Here is one of my favorite Hill shooters, made in the 50's.

Only have had one bow with green glass, back in my teens, and whenever I see one now, it makes me feel about that young again.  Thanks for sharing the pictures.

I wish small bowyers could have access to the green glass.  I would probably need another job though!!

Man, I love some green bows. It's time to let this thread die before we drive up the demand.
