Well, it finally will arrive next Monday. I officially turn into an old person. :)
Been dealing with something called Bell's Palsy since last July and got the news in December, right before Christmas, that I have prostate cancer. Two trips to Hopkins and more to come. Isn't life grand? :)
Here's what I did to overcome age. I ordered a new hill style bow from John McDonald. How can ya beat that?
What did you guys do to celebrate turning 60?
On another note, after over 18 years of no alcohol, I bought a bottle of bourbon. Yup, it still taste the same. :)
Happy Birthday! Good thing you bought the bourbon it is gonna' come in handy. Getting old takes stones I turned 60 ten years ago. Best of luck with the prostate sure hope you caught it early enough. :campfire:
Thanks Bjorn. Turning 70 has got to be a bit more difficult. No one knows how much time you have left. I guess it matters how you live the time you have.
Is that a Jimi Hendricks shirt on your grandson? Nice hog pic!
I can't remember, I'm 70.

Foxbo that is my son Adam he is my hunting partner! I was fortunate and had a boy and girl with both wives!
And yes that is Jimi's finest camo! One of my fav pics.
Happy 60th to you and yes the age thing catches up with us. I turned 60 last year and to celebrate, I had both knees replaced. To many parachute jumps and heavy rucks for Uncle Sam and rodeoing days to follow that. The new knees work great and I can get back after it again. I wish you the best on the prostate cancer, do what you have to do to stay healthy, modern medicine can do some amazing things. Get through the tough days and look forward to each new day. Buying a new bow is always a boost to the morale so enjoy it, the stick and string is good therapy. Best to you as you work through the prostate bout, you will be in my prayers buddy.
Everything takes a little longer.
When I turned 60 I went on a self guided Elk hunt. I have some bad knees and cardiac issues but went for it any way. Great time, I just signed up for Social Security so I may go hunt somewhere else to celebrate.....LOL!
Happy birthday. My next one is 60. I plan to be retired till I am 120 so.. only 60 more years to go !
Good luck with the other issues. Get past them and use that new bow this fall. John is certainly an ornery ol cuss, but he makes nice bows.
ChuckC
It's not that bad, it just takes you all day to do, what you used to do all day. Getting old ain't for the faint of heart ! Just make sure to keep moving and don't give up.
I was 63 when I went on my first self elk hunt, ended up going with my friends boys in Idaho, I was able to keep up, and they didn't take it easy on me, at least not that I could tell. I was on my own during the week, I didn't get an elk, but I learned a lot for my next trip out there.
Happy Birthday! I hope in three years when I turn 60 I can still do all that I am doing now. To help I continue to work out regularly, don't smoke and take regular hunting trips with the longbow.
6o you just a puppy as for the water works thing sorry to hear about that man it six big time.
I turn 60 in June Ed...but Bob F. is still older than both of us... :)
Bob
Can't help you with turning 60. My memory is shot and I can't even remember my 70th any more :(
I try to do everything I want to do and that I used to do that I enjoy. Might take a few minutes longer. Use it or lose it. Buying a new bow is just what the Dr. ordered. I did the 14 mile Bataan March Sunday and was just a shade faster than 3 miles per hour.
Happy Birthday.
Tip........live and enjoy each day.
Turned 60 in January , After 42 years doing masonary work I have to admit I'm not the man I once was , I always knew I'd get old just never thought I'd wear out . I used to shoot a 76 # Black Widow and even took a nice Blue Wildebeest and Gemsbuck with an 80# Quillon Longhunter now when my back acts up , which is pretty regular , my 60# bows are almost too much . One thing I find myself looking forward to and enjoying hunts as much as ever , maybe more so . So enjoy the times the Lord has given to you to the full and have no regrets . My thoughts , Fred
Every day's a holiday, every meal's a feast. 60 is just a number. I just turned 67, and I don't feel a day over 66.
Hey Foxbo, Mon 31Mar, age 60, crap! Me tooo. Wish I was one of those guys that thinks its a good thing for some crazy reason. Knees, backs, hips, prostates! What are you gonna do? This is the time in life that we really do get a chance to try and live in the moment. I have to remind myself daily, just how blessed my life has been till now. Good luck man. Beating those challenges ahead are going to make this falls buck even sweeter. Chin forward and give them hell.....
Norm from Canuckistan.
Happy 60th birthday wishes my friend! Take each and every day one at a time and thank the good Lord morning, noon, and night! May this birthday be the most fulfilling ever!
I'll be 62 in August...60 hmmm....let's see. Oh yeah....fished in the morning, shot the bow for about an hour in the evening, came in, poured a tall Gin, patted the wife on the backside and hoped for the best later on... :readit:
Keep thinking young not old ... age is going to happen, how you deal with it can be a choice.
Keep active, do what you love and when health issues arise try to meet them head on with a positive attitude. I am 65, I had my left ankle replaced last year and I'll have my right one done this year in May. I still hike, bike, HUNT, and try to think like I did when I was 40 ... I have friends in their 80's who still hunt and steelhead fish in the winter ... growing old ain't for sissies but WE CAN DO IT and still find the passion ... Happy Birthday young fella
Now try to make it to 61.
66 in two weeks. Odd, remember when you were " seven and a half"? Now you wil start that half thing again, with pride!
Look around at all your friends that are not here, and live a day for each of them to add substance to your days. Do the things YOU want to do. I may retire next year. Anew bow will ease you into....shooting a new bow and the pleasure of tuning it. Live it up and never give up
For my 60th last September, I hired a guide to take me smallmouth fishing. He showed up with a canoe and ONE paddle, presaging a fine day on the water. Since, I have determined to learn to shoot a longbow instinctively. Making good progress with a new Byron Ferguson Woodsman 66" longbow, 46# at my 28" draw length. Sweet, smooth, and fast with 420 grain carbon arrows. I hope for my first bow kill deer this Fall!
For my 60th (in 2010)my buddy picked me up and we went "scouting for geese". Meanwhile, back at the ranch, friends and family showed up to help my bride set out my birthday gifts. For months she had been buying 60 items, 60 of each! (that's 3,600 things). Everything from 60 pennies and little green army men to 60 Twizzlers and balloons. The best was 60 different beers! The only one I didn't care for was the one with a chili in it.
I just picked up 4 new meds yesterday, two are temporary, two I might be taking 'til I croak.
Only one thing worse than getting old...
Happy Birthday!! We are close, I am going to be 67 March 30 and my grandson will be 24 March 31/
I was pouring concrete every day into my early 60s plus building bows. I could say now I'm retired. Just building bows and tired. LOL. Getting old is having the time but not the energy. When you are young you have the energy but don't take the time. Not much difference except that you learn to appreciate life a bunch more.
God bless, Steve
So far as a tip, don't be afraid to admit you're slowing down a bit, can't lift quite as much, can't keep after it quite as long. I got soo p!$$ed when I first had to get glasses. I quickly came to the realization that this is just the natural order of things. Nothing to hate, just do as much as I can as long as I can.
At a local restaurant someone my age was celebrating his 62nd. He said that he had to give up chasing younger women, they were all too fast for him and he couldn't catch them. Then someone else said,"your wife is younger than you". The birthday boy said "I know, I can't catch her either."
I turned 60 last fall. I heard on the news the other day that there is a woman in Japan that is legit documented to be 121 yrs. old. So the way I figure I'm only about half way to the end.
My advice? One day at a time.
Welcome to the club....pretty good crowd to pass the years with.....
I also picked up a bottle of bourbon a few months ago.... Maybe for the same reason, I turn 60 in 3 months.
From the inside I still think I'm 30 but when I look in a mirror I'm startled at who's looking back !
Plus, after many "wrecks" and 4 surgeries, the aches and pains don't go away like they did when I was 30.
But times are wonderful and I am truly blessed.
Happy birthday! Ordering the Hill bow is a great start going into the old age category. Keep doing all the fun stuff you have been doing all along, but just remand ember to go a bit slower. Train diligently, follow the doctor's orders.
I finally drew my limited entry Colorado Elk archery tag after 21 years. Spent my birthday in the woods and actually managed to stick my bull that day. Bad news is it took me two weeks to find him. Nice antlers but the meat was terrible tasting.
By the way I did that 13 day hunt solo.
I just turned 60 this year so I'm not too far ahead of you.
The things I have noticed is that I can still do what I want, but I have to not take anything for granted, have to do my homework. I went mountain goat hunting last year, and hopefully will go this year, but I exercise every day to be able to do that. There was a time I just grabbed my pack and went.
I am a volunteer fireman and EMT, and work with a much younger group. Another scene where I have to do more just to keep doing it.
Definitely worth the effort.
So far I have been blessed with good health, but I know my turn will come. I guess what I am getting at is focusing on what can still be done and doing it. What I can't do will come on it's own, don't need to welcome it in. I watch my wife fight cancer to a draw over the last ten years, and she still gets out and walks 5 miles a day, gardens, goes fishing with me, and she is 67. A good example for me to follow. She says every day is a gift.
Turned 62 a couple of weeks ago. Still doing the things I've always done, just a bit slower, and perhaps not as often. Get the prostate thing out of the way. Beat mine at 56. And, Happy Birthday !
Wow! So many replies and so many well wishes. I appreciate everyone taking the time to post a reply. It seems it's for everyone of us old fellows as we're all in the same boat. :) How the years slip up on us. It amazes me.
Bob Ferrell is still older than me and Bob Barnes! Hehehhe! How's your eye doing Bob? Hope all is well for a full recovery.
Everyone, thank you so very much for your well wishes. Here's to all of us making the best of what we have to work with and hope for many more arrows to fly....Ed Carneal in VA.
There's another good thing about this place. I still have 5 more years to go, I feel like a kid!
Happy birthday!
I'll raise my bottle,of beer and toast you. And send a prayer your way too beat the prostate "C".
Enjoy that bourbon.. And th finer things that life has to offer.
And remember to tighten your butt cheeks when you sneeze don't want nothin slipping out. :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
jK..
Hey Ed, Happy Birthday!
I don't recall doing anything to celebrate mine - I think I tried to lay low and hoped nobody would notice, ha ha...
First of all ....Happy Birthday..!!
Turned 60 last November, age is only a number ...Right!... I still do all the things I did 30 years ago just a little bit slower, and hopefully a little bit smarter?
Good Luck and enjoy the advantages of being well seasoned...
I'll be 72 in June and All I can say is to enjoy what you are doing and don't let anything stand in your way. Best of Luck >
Some great comments on here. I just turned 58 a couple months ago, so 60 will be here before I know it.
It's just the last couple years that I realized I was getting older. Have to exercise and work out to just keep the same physical level. And I still work in construction, but the knees are starting to get bad.
I jst try to keep the hunts lined up in front of me to keep the desire sharp.
Happy Birthday! At 60 I was caught in the last round of lay-offs. Thought my world ended for about a week. My grandson asked if I had time to come to grandparents' day at his school? Time--heck yea I have time! Who else needs an available grand parent—I'm in. Looking back two years later, the time I've had with my wife, kids and grandkids has been the best time of my life and it all started at SIXTY! So I say, bring it on--Tpa has time for all his little hunters.
Make every day count getting to 70 is the next marker getting old aint for sissies.Get regular checkups every 3 months for prostate goodluck.

Just don't look back.
Trying to compare now to the "good old days" doesn't add up too well. Watching your diet and keeping fit will go a long way to making things easier.

I kinda figure if you are one of the men that "live" life, it doesn't really matter how far you get down the path of years. Enjoy every day to the fullest. Especially those birthdays.
It sounds like you're doing okay, a new bottle of bourbon and a new longbow on the way. You'll conquer the prostate thing and keep right on going.
Best Regards and Happy Birthday!!!!!!
Turned 62 in December, started SS in February- age is just a number that I try not to worry about. I've started having aches in places that I forgot I had. Ladder stands and ground blinds have become more appealing than lock-ons or climbers. I still work hard, but I've learned work smarter. Why bust my arse and hurt myself moving/lifting heavy stuff when I've got equipment to do that for me-tractors, log splitters, backhoes, etc.
A heart felt THANK YOU to ALL!
When I turned 60 I bought a Harley and started hanging out with younger people. Age is a state of mind. Think young, act young and you'll feel young. I just turned 78 and I still have a Harley.. :saywhat:

"Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!" I've followed this mantra for almost 64 years and it has served me well.
Like Ron said, hanging out with younger folks helps to keep you young at heart. Except for the normal wear items I'm doing pretty good for my age.
Happy Birthday and enjoy the new bow.
Good luck with your bumps in the road, all will be fine. :archer2:

Got that part covered Ron. I've owned this same bike since I bought it new in November-81. Just had the second top end job done. Added a higher performance cam, new Super E Carb, had the trans gone thru, etc. It runs better now then it did when new. Velda is her name and I just can't part with her. :)This pic was taken around 89, but she still looks the same.
It's all about fitness level and attitude!
I hit 60 this year. Dang time Flys ! Dang body can't keep up with my mind, it thinks I'm still 40 or so but as badly as I've abused my body and alot of surgery s for busted stuff it's held up well. . I took a 5 day solo canoe trip and i I ordered myself a new Widow PAX And planning a couple out of state hunts this year . I really hope I can retire in a few years We weren't put on this earth to work till we fall over dead !
Ed, I bought this Heritage Springer new in 97. The wife and I went to Sturgis bike week that year. Still got the bike.
Both of your motors are very cool Ron. I don't blame you for hanging onto both of them. Two Harleys...how cool is that! I may wind up with a more comfortable bike one day, but I'll still keep the shovel. That new cam and carb really woke that engine up!
I sold the red Harley and bought this Custom bike. I had it for several years and then sold it. I'm keeping the white Heritage Springer for as long as I can throw a leg over it.. :D

It's not the question how old you are, I don't even like the saying, better like in Spanish how many years do you have, and is heard of a lady that would answer the question of how old are with this, I still have 20 yrs left, she lived until she was 98, so bro how many years do you have left, 10, 20,30, or are you going for 40
I will be 60 in June if I make it.....hahaha!! In September  I am going to the Spearhead ranch in Wyoming to hunt antelope. This will be my second trip there. Awesome hunt!!!Lots of animals and close shots!! The Moore family and crew are outstanding hosts!
I been lucky Foxbo. Had 3 operations that changed my old age life Id say. Had both rotator cuffs repaired and a disk in my tailbone repaired. The disk was so bad I was crippled by it for hunting. If I hunted on a Monday Id have to recover till Wednesday before I could get out again and only then with bigtime pain. I couldnt pull a bow for 10 yrs due to my rotator cuff. So I hobbled and shot rifles. My advice is to not hurt yourself by thinking your a youngin. Let the young men drag them deer and do the bull work if you can. Prostate cancer is the best cancer to have if your gonna have to choose one. It wont kill ya per say and is easily treated nowdays. My bro-inlaw had radiation actually inserted into his body and is doing very well. Heres hoping for another 20 yrs chasing deer and enjoying life.
Don't do it
I ignored turning 60.......that was 3 years ago.
just stay active and doing the things you want to do
Dang, there are a bunch of us old coggers on here,LOL. 60 aint nothin but a number, keep doin what you want and like, when ya quit is when ya die. I'll Be 64 in November.
Turned 61 in January. I think the hardest part for me is knowing I'm getting ever closer to the end. Sort of saddens me but we plow forward now don't we ? I buried my Dad 3 years ago and the last years for him were not good by any measure. Stay on top of the annual physicals and the prostate checks and colon look sees are sound advice. I walk quite a bit to keep my legs under me and try to do some wind sprints while walking to help the cardio. Watching what you eat will go a long way. The only red meat I now eat is venison except for the occasional sirloin. The rest is chicken or turkey, fish and small wild game and birds. Also , fiber will never fail you. LOL.
I'm no Bible thumper by any means but getting and staying right with the Lord is always a good idea.
Bottom line is , none of us are getting out of this alive and as such we should live it that way.
I'm 68 and waited to let some others say it first but 60 is not old! I am BLESSESD to have never had a serious illness or injury and do work a bit at maintaining my health but even with today's "modern" lifestyles the average male in America lives to his mid/high 70s I believe. If we stayed away from tobacco, alcohol to excess and raising bellies as big as Labrador retrievers, the large majority of us wouldn't need tips on turning 70.
Just turned 60 this past Friday. Still doing most everything I've done till now. Gave up rock climbing and mountain biking because I don't want to risk any more injuries.
I work with younger folks a lot, eat pretty well, stay active, and while I'm aware of my years, still feel pretty young.
Sixty is the new forty!
I'm hearing the suggestions here, too; I do need to get a couple screenings (usually don't see a doctor unless it's an emergency).
I'm an expert at 60-I turned that number in February-
I like threads here where fellows older than me are still very active in bowhunting. They give me lots of hope that I ain't done yet.
God willing this should be my most ambitious year in 45 years of bowhunting; turkey, black bear (New Brunswick), Moose (Alberta), and of course white-tail here at home.
A few days ago, after researching for a few months I applied (first timer) for a Bighorn permit in Montana. I'm also in the hopper for year 8 for the Ky elk season.
There are lots of folks whose best bowhunting years took place after 60. Let's join em!
I took up mountain bike riding this past August. I love it but I have to admit that I went over the handlebars 3 weeks ago and am still nursing cracked or broken ribs. I wasn't on a trail, just riding the roads for exercise around my house. I hit the road to keep from being hit by a car. I'll be back on it in another week or so.
Love those Harley pics! I've only owned rice-burners and those were more than 25 years ago. I love the new blacked-out Sportsters.
