I just bought my first recurve this week. Its a Samick Sage with 60# limbs. I've been trying to tune via adjusting brace height and can't seem to find the "sweet spot". I started at the lower end of the recommended BH and worked my way up to the higher end 3 twists at a time, but no matter what the string still seems to "twang" rather than have a "thump" sound to it. Anyone have any advise for a newbie?

I have no experience with the Sage bows, but I have heard many folks say they are great bows as soon as you replace the factory string with a good Flemish twist string. Good Luck!!!
-
Do you have string silencers on?
-
No string silencers. I do have some B-50 that I could make a Flemish twist string out of.
-
I wrapped yarn around both ends of the string, where it hits the limb tips and put puff ball silencers on it,now it's just a thump.
-
What weight arrows are you shooting?

Right now I'm shooting some 2117 Easton aluminum arrows until my order for fetching comes in, then I'll be shooting some .400 Easton axis traditional arrows.
-
I was thinking a very light arrow might be contributing to the noise...2117 should be plenty heavy...maybe try the different string idea...you want the bow as quiet as possible before adding string silencers...I have one recurve that is much quieter since I went to a different string

60 pounds is a lot of weight to start with a recurve.
-
I'll make a Flemish twist string for it today and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the input.

JUST SHOOT for a while!! 60# is a LOT to start with but your arrows (2117) for that bow will be fine for now. Set your brace height in the middle of the recommended range and forget it.
With trad shooting, your tune will DEFINITELY change as you learn to shoot and the "noise" you are experiencing will probably change too. So save money and frustration and JUST SHOOT what you have. In a month or so you can re-visit the issue. This is the polar opposite of compound shooting -- where your traditional "tune" is 90% YOU and 10% equipment. With C bows it is 90% equipment and 10% you.
One week just doesn't "cut it" for being stable enough to "tune" effectively.

now im am not an expert of any kind. but my first bow was a recurve, and I found that a good bear fur or leather arrow shelf helps along with beaver fur string silencers as well. best of luck.

I agree with Moe All strings make noise. However, a string will always make less noise with string silencers than without string silencers.
-
Thanks for the input.

I am with moebow. Alot of the noise could be technique related, especially with it being your first recurve and a new bow in general. Even an issue with your release could be causing louder than normal string twang
Additionally, I shoot a Samick Sage with 50# limbs and love it; for the record though I have not owned another trad bow to compare it to

If you are used to shooting longbows, a recurve will always sound like a TWANG! That longbow THUD is a waaaaaaay better sound to me.
I also totally agree with what Moebow said in his post above!

Sage is a great bow for the money, what I recommend to everyone that is buying one is shell out another 15 bucks and get a decent string for it, the one that comes with it is JUNK! Put some string silencers on her and it will be better. Where at in CO are you?

X2. The string the Sage comes with is garbage.

A lot of really good info here. Thanks a bunch guys. I'll just keep shooting it and working on my technique. @ old_goat2, I'm in Montrose, down by Grand Junction. I'll probably be moving to your end of the state a little later this year though.

I have the same bow, I've had for a long time. I agree with everyone you should change the string put some string silencers on. Set the brace in the middle of the range and shoot the thing a lot. As Moe stated over time your form will get better and then you can work on tuning the bow a little better. After having the bow for years and having different, higher price bows, I still shot the sage from time to time.

I just bought a Samick Journey, the 64" version of the Sage. I put on string silencers and it quieted right down. But, it still has a very low level deep sound to it - probably caused by the string.
That said, I'd recommend wearing out the factory string and learn to shoot you bow first. Nothing wrong with it.

Get yourself a bikini string from Allen at Leftiesrus. It won't compensate for form issues but it will quiet the bow down and improve performance.

A good string will help the bow a lot. Will it help someone just starting out? Depends...not nearly as much as it will someone with experience though.
I put a 20 strand (24 in the loops) BCY-X string on my 64" Journey (pulling 51@31) and got lots of comments on how quiet it was shooting arrows that were 8.5 gpp. One small set of cat whiskers is all I have on it for silencers.
