This evening was the first chance I've had to take a stand this season. The wind was calm, the temp cool but comfortable.
I was on a tree overlooking an overgrown intercetion of 2 fire roads. After sitting for about 2 hours I spotted my first deer feeding along the fire road towards me.
When she closed the distance to 5 yards and began feeding again I took a shot which sailed high over her back :knothead: :knothead: :banghead: :banghead:
It was a great time in the woods tonight. I can't wait to get back out there and have some more fun. Who knows I just might screw up and kill one some day......LOL
I know the feeling. I snuck up on a doe this morning and got about 30 yards from her but wasn't comfortable taking the shot so I just watched her for awhile, my first time in the woods this fall to.
Do you practice from an elevated stand? Also do you practice close shots for those chances? Over shooting from an elevated stand is common. Folks often estimate the deer as being farther away than they actually are.
Sounds like you were having a great time regardless.

Yes I do quite a bit of shooting from elevated positions. You see my back yard is very steep. I can set up a target at the bottom of the yard and shoot from the top. It is a good 20 yards distance and abot 15 to 20 feet in elevation. I just think that with my doe feaver I never picked a small spot and just shot at the whole deer. One of these days I'll get all my stuff together. I thought after this evening I could write some tips on a small sticker and slap it on my upper bow limb in my line of sight.
That's common too. At least you didn't spook her out of there and just might get a third shot yet.
Did you pick a spot? In my experience(I've got lots) an overshot is from looking at the deer and not where the arrow should go. Years ago I missed 6 deer within 10 minutes and only had 3 arrows. After I missed with the first 3 I climbed down and retrieved my arrows, climbed back into my stand and missed 3 more. Every shot were over the back shots.

I had my nephew shoot for the first time ever, from a stand in the back yard It is about 12 feet and the target started out at about 5 yards. He's only been shooting about a week. The first ten shots or so went into a good group about 2" over the back of my 3-D target.
He started bending at the waist instead of trying to put all his weight on his back leg. Instantly the shots were going where he wanted them. Be sure and bend at the waist in uphill/downhill/treestand shots.
In the heat of battle I seem to always forget to do something. Either bend at the waist or to slow down and pick a spot. But I love the rush ya know what I mean?
Larry this thread makes me look real good Bud HAHA. One of my "students".That's what happens when you get all nerved up, don't bend at the waist, and don't pick a spot. Let's see how we do Saturday if I don't work.
