Title: New Hill bow?
Post by: mellonhead on March 16, 2014, 12:00:00 PM
I am thinking about ordering a new Hill bow from HHA.  I am thinking about going old school and either brown or black glass.  What model would you order if your where going to cover up the lams with colored glass?  I am actually leaning towards a big five with brown glass and a walnut riser with laced moose hide grip.  Any pics of Hill bows with brown or black glass would be great.  Thanks.

I would get a Cougar reverse with an extra bamboo lamination. I shoot better with the reverse grips.

If you are sure about that brown glass, Go with a reverse Wesley with a coco bolo riser.

mellonhead....
I have a Big 5 With Brown Belly and Black Back with a Walnut Riser....
When I ordered the Bow Craig ask me what Riser I wanted, I told him surprise me, He went down the road to a Gun Stock maker and got a piece of Walnut, He said it looked great with the Brown Belly....
And my Bow, was the first he used the Brown Black glass combo....
My point is.. Sometimes it pays to let the Bowyer do his thing....

The idea of a Crocodile is pretty intriguing to me. I also like the Owl. That's potentially because I have lots of experience with bamboo bows and very little (if any) with Osage, though. From what I've seen, though, it's hard to go wrong with a good ol' Big Five.

I like the rest of your specs. I'm a big fan of walnut and moose-related accents. I've thought about the laced moose hide grip with the addition of some moose antler accents. I think you might even be able to get a silver moose inlay on/in the bow, if you wanna get even more moose themed!

Have fun, and good luck with the new bow order.

This quest of mine this year to get back to basics has been fun.  I just have the itch to go old school.  I have not had this much fun shooting in years.  Hill style bows have always interested me but finally gonna go for it.  Thanks for all the advise guys.

Simple, "Tembo".  I would ask if he could replicate the riser from one of the Centennial models.

I have 3 black glass Hills. I have 2 Wesley Specials, one with gloss black and one with the low luster glass. My Big Five is gloss black. I prefer the gloss for looks and have never had an issue with animals busting me due to reflection. Some though, prefer flat black as a camo effect. Whether gloss or flat, black is definitely my favorite color.

I also have a couple of recurves in black.  The only bow I have with brown limbs is a Wing Red Wing Hunter, which also looks nice.

Whatever you choose, be sure to show us some nice pics.

Old School from HHA - sounds like a Tembo with brown glass back, white glass belly, myrtle riser and dished grip to me!

Mike's suggestion of a handle modelled after the Centennial is a good point too.

I think that either black or brown glass looks great with bamboo lams and a myrtlewood riser, very classic! I do think that while a matte finish is more practical for hunting, on colored glass it looks dead, and not very classic.Just my opinion.  I kill the glare on glossy bows with un-buffed paste wax, Minwax or J&J.

I am just reading "Hunting the Hard Way" and it seems that Howard's favourite bow for bigger game was Ol' Grandpa and for small game Grandma.  I think HHA Tembo is based on Grandma, but I don't know about Grandpa... It might be fun to have the bow that He preferred...

Thanks for the pics and suggestions guys.  I'm gonna call Craig at HHA and get some input from him also.
