After a month of frustration of trying to get my first batch of cedar arrows flying 'right' and true to what I'm used to seeing from my carbons, I pulled the trigger and got in touch with David at Wilderness Custom Arrows. He's been a great help in shaft selection and an absolute pleasure to deal with for accepting an order the way you wish. I can't wait to get my box. I'm hoping that having some real arrows (professionally crafted, as opposed to my recent attempt) will get my mind off of the challlenge and maybe back into hopes of one day crafting my own arrows again, but if not, I'm keeping David's email address close at hand!
Thanks Snag!
-
He is pretty handy with the cedars.
-
Top notch guy and top notch work. I recently got some from him, and now I know what wood arrows are meant to be like!
Darcy :campfire:
-
David makes the best woods I have ever used. They also are the nicest looking. Want to really treat yourself spring for a set with all the fancy feather work. He is a master.
God bless, Steve
-
Showem off when u gettem.
-
David has made several sets for me, but these seem to stand out best.

He's alright ;)
-
I have been doing the same Rory. Got my test arrows from him and then got sent outta town for work.
-
SNAG makes some of the best arrows I have seen
-
Those arrows are art. More patience than I have
-
Rory, the postal service says they were delivered on 3/8...you got them didn't you?
Scott, I was seeing pink for a few days after shipping your arrows...haha
Thank you for the kind remarks. I truly love serving others by building arrows for you. Then to have this kind of feedback it is really a blessing.
Sometimes I wish I could get them to you quicker. But you just can't rush somethings.
-
My next batch will be chartreuse and purple. ;-)

-
I'm looking forward to these Nathan. I've got them "in the line up".
-
I have three dozen and two more coming all in different color schemes. You can't go wrong with any of Snag's creations no matter what color combination they are. That Chartreuse and Purple or possibly pink does sound interesting. Hmmmm
-
I'd like to see more pictures from you guys who have some of David's work, if you don't mind sharing.. Man those pinkies look good for sure!
-
Hey Caleb, that's okay. I'll run up and shoot them for you. Just leave that longbow out for me, would ya?
-
Awesome! One day I'll need give wood arrows a try!
-
I started with wood. Always the best having a freshly broken, scarlet wooden shaft on the autumn floor! Think I need to go back. They are fun!
-
I shipped these out to a lady in B.C. the other day. I hear she's a very good shot. Might be the next Canadian National Champ.

These went to Spokane, Wa. to a very fine bow builder.

Just another set that went out.

-
Looking good Snag! I really like those yellow on white, but they're all some fine looking arrows.
-
Folks that can crest like that really amaze me.
-
Generally speaking, I'm cheap. If I can make it / do it myself, I will. I can make arrows. I've done it before.
I order mine from Snag, now.
Affordable, fully functional and absolutely beautiful.

Two thumbs up to David!

To the top. Let's see some more if you have them!

Great work, David!

Hi Grant! You make enough of these and some of them turn out ok...haha

Finished these today. I am a little surprised more guys don't order the 4-4" fletched. These ought to show up pretty good.
-
Man those look good with the ebony stain!
-
Rory, I agree. I love the contrast of the ebony stain with the bright color of the fletching.
-
Love those last ones David  I'm starting to shoot more 4 fletch, great stabilization for sure!!

Here are my "snag" arrows :) They also are meat seekeers even though he won't say that in public.
-
Steadman, that's a fine looking batch there!
David, I've wondered about a four fletch. A buddy of mine uses it for slowing down target arrows. I don't know if it truly has that affect, but I've wondered.
-
Two years ago I threw all the wood arrows I had in a fire pit at a 3D shoot and swore them off for good. I just can't seem to figure them out.
But........
Every time snag starts a thread, I can't help but open it up and look at the beauties he has created. Snag, you truly are an artist!
Bisch
-
Rory, if you shoot 4 4" fletching it won't slow them down anymore than 3 5". If you go to 4 5" it definitely will slow them down. I shoot 4 4" shield and can't tell a difference from the 3 5".
Jerome, not the campfire!!! haha Give me your specs, bow and draw length, and I'll make you a couple of testers to shoot. I just can't see a guy in a bad way with wood. You pay the shipping and I'll send you a couple of testers.
-
Man!
Those arrows are for showin not shootin THERE TOO NICE!!!! I just couldn't shoot something that nice in fear of blemishing one. I'm sure there shooters fore shure but so much work Into them.
Snag you truly are gifted!! :notworthy:
Tim.
-
Thanks for bringing that to mind Mr. Fingers- now I've got to either loosen up the groups that I've tried so hard to tighten, or only shoot them one at a time for fear of having them hit one another! ;)
-
To the top! If you use Wilderness Custom Arrows, I'd like to see pictures, if you don't mind sharing.
Thanks!
-
Went over to Davids today to pick up some arrows he did up for me. I saw him at the TAO banquet this year and told him what I was looking for and he said he'd see what he could do. Well these are awesome never shot 4 fletch before and I'm impressed to say the least Thanks David.

Lucky me. :)
Can you see where I had Snag mark my brace height in the cresting?

Yup. I had him make the choice as to where to mark it so he started the cresting at my brace height.

I should have added this sooner. I have ordered arrows from Snag before. But last year I had a lot of trouble getting the right spine for my bow. In desperation I called Snag and asked him his opinion on this particular bow.
I did not expect him to have time to get some arrows done before my elk trip and had decided to be content with using another setup. To my amazement David said "you know, that is the same arrow I personally shoot" and then he said he would send me six of his own personal arrows!
You will not find a better guy to do business with than Snag. Thanks again, Dave!
Here they are on my bow: Not as flashy or as colorful as some others than he has made, but boy do they look classy on my Pronghorn. (BTW real turkey feathers)

Some beautiful arrows thanks for sharing fella's.

Thanks for sharing guys!

-
Well, last night I received a tracking number from David!!!!!
-
Well, where's the picture David ? :D
-
Duplicate post -
-
I love looking at Dave's arrows. Functional art if there ever was!
I've only ever had one set of wood arrows and I got rid of the bow that they were for. Got a new bow that's the same weight, but they don't seem to fly out of the new bow. It's hard for me to shoot woods when carbons shoot so well for me. If I ever decide to shoot wood arrows, Dave is definitely the guy I'm going to call!
Dave: Have you ever dabbled with the marbled dip?
-
I can't spell wud, but I keep coming back to this thread to look at all the cool arrows that snag builds!
Bisch
-
You need some Bisch! Don't fight the urge...
-
Hi Shane. I'm sorry, I'm just not into the marble at all. Too wavy-gravy for me. I'm more a classics old school meets new school kind of guy.
I had 5 perfectly matched old ACME shafts that I just had to make into some arrows for myself. This is what I came up with.

I didn't order this combination ...... Snag kind of came up with it. Great guy!
-
Snag and AW, both of these are great looking combinations and would please any quiver in my home!
Hey Snag, my USPS status is DELIVERED!!!! I can't wait to get home!! Thank you again David!

awbowman...the ones you have are my favorite! Really like the color combo!

Thanks for the compliment taxyman, but Snag actually picked the combo for me. Not bad for my first set of woodies. Great father's day gift from the kids.
And believe me the picture doesn't do them justice. We always seem to get on the subject of "how pretty Snag's arrows are" but I'll tell you, THE QUALITY IS SECOND TO NONE IN PERFORMANCE TOO!
With Simmons Interceptors mounted on them they have a PURE MEANNESS TO THEM ..... in a pretty sort of way!
-
They're home! Thanks David!

Nice rw, what's the specs?
-
45-50 spine, 28" to bop, Douglas Fir and fly like feathered missles. I just have to get used to shooting the shorter arrows compared to my full length Easton carbons, but they're shooters for sure!

Well I was shooting some pretty nice group therapy last night at the indoor range and blew the nock off of one of my new arrows. These arrows are as good as I could have asked for. I just need to quit shooting groups!

I purposely do NOT shoot groups because I don't want to break an arrow / nock. The idea that I could ruin an arrow can make a guy panic.
Nice group.

-
I know it is so tempting to shoot groups...but not always the best idea! :nono:
-
My best and tightest groups come from one arrow rounds. :smileystooges:
Here's some shafting Snag tapered/whipped up for me a few years ago that I turned into arrows (just not as pretty as Snag's work). Unfortunately they group just like yours.
(http:// [img]http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg617/shrewshooter/Untitled-2.jpg) [/IMG]
-
Haha Ray! I can definitely relate to the one arrow rounds!
As much as I want to stop shooting groups, Snag is right. It is soooo tempting. Especially when I'm shooting indoors with friends. Might just have to start shooting the smaller five spot targets- aim small....

Got my second batch in Saturday! Snag left the hens off so I could put a personal touch on them with some of the wild feathers I harvested from the Jake I shot a couple of weeks ago. Thanks David!

I also received my broadhead order from 3Rivers today. Somebody's ready to try to take his first turkey with a wooden arrow.

Way to add your own touch Rory. I hope you can coax a big old gobbler in and put one of these to work!
I just finished these today and they are heading to Missouri.

Thanks David! Truly a privilege to have an opportunity to fletch over the work of a professional.
Man those look classy! The ebony stain, gold crest and trad barred and white fletching makes them look really classic. Great work!
-
He is a very good tournament archer and wanted 3-4" fletching. I love the ebony stain on douglas fir also. Then the contrast with the white and the gold highlights just sets it off. He has a special edition bow that sounds like these will compliment very nicely.
-
Received my first set from Snag this past Friday. These are my first "real" wood arrows, having shot aluminum then carbon. It's cliché, but true in that they're pretty enough to make you consciously careful with them!
Grabbed three with field points installed and went out back to my brand spanking new straw bale target that I'd made. First group I noticed two things... 1) my nocks were tight on the string sending my arrows a bit to the left, and 2) straw bales don't stop arrows very well as they buried to the feathers. Live and learn.
I quick swapped out strings for one with smaller serving, nocks fit nice and passive and the arrows flew GREAT. Backed out to 30 yards and the arrows dropped right in. (Dinged one against the other and cringed.)
Thank you David for a great service.
Here's a few pics. Sorry about the poor quality of the photos but you get the idea.
Douglas Fir: 29" BOP tapered; Trad #12 cresting; 160 gr. points; 595 gr. overall arrow weight.

-
Very nice Mike! Good shooting too!
-
Thanks Rory, that wasn't the 30 yard group though ;)
-
Mike that's just a little arrow kiss! haha Be careful not to shoot this arrow if it seems cracked. Can't tell in the picture...but it seems there is a slight crack...?
Nice shooting!
-
Nah, it's O.K. more of a dent than a crack. As long as I've got you here David, any special treatment for these arrows, or tips, i.e. I've heard of some people rubbing the point end with soap to prevent target burn? If I have a dent like this, should I seal it with something? Etc.
-
The bar soap on the shafts works pretty good. Take a paper towel and buff them up afterwards. I'd put some super glue on the dent. Just make sure you lay it down so that the glue stays in the dent.
-
If anyone's hesitant to try some wood arrows because they aren't sure of spine or "how they'll fly", just tell Snag your setup and then believe what he recommends.
I did some paper tuning yesterday just because I hadn't done it before and wanted to see how my arrows "tuned".
Here's three shots from 3,6, and 9 feet with no adjustments to brace, nock, etc. Snag was spot on with his spine recommendation.
(http://i877.photobucket.com/albums/ab337/drmreilly/papertuning6-25-14.jpg) (http://s877.photobucket.com/user/drmreilly/media/papertuning6-25-14.jpg.html)
